Ellum Sampler V3 - Part 2
John Monkman - "Talking Head" - (6:17) 124 BPM
8-Bit Culprit - "Refurbished Robots" - (7:55) 131 BPM
Headwaters - "Eternal Madness" - (5:32) 122 BPM
Christian Nielsen - "Liberate" - (6:29) 126 BPM Hot
Review: Ellum Audio presents a powerful dance floor selection on a new sampler curated by label head Maceo Plex. For Part 2, Ibiza-based producer and DJ John Monkman showcases his prowess with "Talking Heads", a sublime blend of futuristic synth and steel-edged drums. 8-Bit Culprit, the techno alias of Faraz Ehsan from India, delivers the electrifying "Refurbished Robots", taking dancers to the heart of an otherworldly dancefloor with its nebulous pads and cosmic flex. The collaborative duo Headwaters from Turkey present the slick tech house number "Eternal Madness", while Danish DJ Christian Nielsen concludes V3 with the dark dance floor punisher, "Liberate", featuring neck-snapping snares and haunting vocals. Already receiving acclaim from Maceo Plex at major events, this compilation promises to be a standout highlight of the summer.

On And On (original mix) - (5:54) 126 BPM
Let Me Go (Luke Alessi remix) - (6:16) 130 BPM Hot
Review: Christian Nielsen's Elusive EP delivers a powerful four-track release showcasing the artist's insatiable range of sounds and styles, locking in a strong debut on Pets Recordings. Commencing with "Techno Viking," an unyielding and unwavering lead track, it's a metronomic stomper fueled by a concrete kick drum and pulsating waves of sub-bass. We also encounter "Let Me Go," a breakbeat bubblebath that transports us back to the euphoric spirit of 90s rave culture which continues in "On and On" - a stripped-back, lo-fi & jacking house gem. Its pressurised synths, raw-cut beats, and cascading sirens seamlessly blend to create a potent weapon primed for festival dancefloors. Luke Alessi takes up remix duties and with "Let Me Go" he takes the original to new heights, infusing it with nostalgic old-school vibes, rendering it a compelling noughties-flavoured anthem.

Come On - (5:13) 128 BPM

The Hack - (4:40) 125 BPM
Void - (5:03) 128 BPM Hot
Review: In terms of his sound, Denmark's Christian Nielsen has certainly come a long way from his beginnings. Don't expect the Stateside house grooves he was churning out a few years back, as he's now sonically crafted a fresh strain of techno that means serious business. The Copenhagen-based DJ/producer returns to Ellum with another serving of sturdy techno tracks. It's a main room affair for the most part: there's the wonky acid thump of "Come On", heads-down moments on the dancefloor are catered for on "Drag", while the bass heavy minimal jack of "The Void" heads to the afterhours.

Review: Maceo Plex's Ellum label has showcased some of underground house and techno's most respected names in recent years - and this compilation is no exception. Italian house legend Dino Lenny delivers a wonderfully evocative, bass-heavy cut on "Let Me In", while Fedele from Agents of Time flies solo for the twitchy, electronic groove of "Riot Disco" and Christian Nielsen follows a similar path for "Glitch Itch". Meanwhile, North Lake, who released on the label back in 2017, goes deeper for the dubbed out "Imperial Heights", and Borne Aloft delves into bleep-heavy space techno on the tracky but discordant sounding "Primal Urge".

Review: Most labels and collectives are challenged to last a decade in electronic music's fleeting landscape, but so far Kompakt has endured for twice this lifespan. This is largely due to the fact that the Cologne operation boasts a tightly-knit group of artists who continue to release on its many labels. For the twentieth edition of the annual Total compilation series, many of those producers come correct; Robag Wruhme and founder Michael Mayer both deliver ponderous deep techno tracks, while Jurgen Paape goes even farther, veering into guitar-spangled melancholia on "Vox Acris". This introspective mood seeps through to more overt dance floor tracks, with Sascha Funke's eerie "Atze" and Voigt & Voigt's "Schopper Da Leu" delivering understated but impactful results.

Review: Having released on Noir, Kompakt and Skream's Of Unsound Mind label, Christian Nielsen now debuts on Maceo Plex's Ellum imprint. Straddling a fine line between techno and house throughout, the title track sees a nagging, growling bass and dubbed out drums support a layered vocal sample. It makes for a compelling combination. On "For Myself", Nielsen delivers a rolling, percussive rhythm that's powered by warbling acid and propulsive snare rolls, while "Switch" sees him change tact again: underpinned by a driving percussive groove, it features a searing electronic riff shot through with looped vocal sample. Rounding off this fine club EP is the tough, jacking acid-fried "Pulse".

Review: Some 12 months after we offered lavish praise for its predecessor, volume five in Shir Khan's "Exploited Ghetto Trax" compilation series arrives. As usual, he's selected some absolute bombs from the Exploited catalogue, enthusiastically sprinting between the drowsy deep house warmth of Kotelekk and Zadak's "The Big Feeling", the jazzy peak-time breakbeats of Enduro Disco, the heart-warming disco-house rush of Art LeRock's "When", the late night deep-tech hypnotism of Marcus Meinhardt's Innervisions-esque "House of Beats (Dub)" and the snappy early morning heaviness of Anti-Anti's warehouse-ready "Heat". There are naturally plenty more highlights elsewhere across the set, but for space reasons we can't champion them all. In a word: essential.

Review: It's that time again: Cologne institution Kompakt return with their annual round up of what's hot in contemporary house and techno - all with the distinct hallmarks in harmony with their aesthetic: deep, intelligent and absolutely evocative. Rest assured that all the usual suspects appear - label stalwarts such as Jorg Burger, Jurgen Paape, Gui Boratto and of course head honchos the Voigt brothers. Elsewhere there are some regulars and newbies alike such as Los Angeleno Sonns on the sun-kissed and tripped-out "Tame" (feat Beesh), veteran John Tejada with the bold melodics of "Detector" (a cut from his brilliant new Dead Start Program LP), lo-slung cosmo-balearica by Ghost Vision on "Zuul" and the legendary Jake Williams aka Rex The Dog on the epic dance floor drama of "Crasher". Another tremendously curated compilation that's essential listening.

Review: Having reached its seventeenth volume, the Total series is making its transition from adolescence into adulthood, but it has lost none of its youthful charms. Like previous editions, it features highlights from the German label's recent releases - including anthems from Laurent Garnier and The Orb - alongside some new gems. The latter category sees Thomas/Mayer deliver the tripped out, acid playfulness of "25", while Kompakt regular Superpitcher chimes in with the angelic vocals and skipping groove of "In My Head". Speaking of otherworldly moments, Jurgen Paape's "Always Disko" is a spaced out disco track from another dimension. Trends and fads come and go, but Kompakt will forever remain a constant, defined by its Total series.

Review: Christian Nielsen is a surprising choice for the Kompakt Extra series: the label would say so themselves!. But they love to surprise your ears and have enjoyed, for some time, his 'outsider approach' to music. In particular with "Hard Times", a peak time melodic monster that bridges the right transitions for when you need it. ?Belgian artist, the Hotflush and Afterlife affiliated Locked Groove presents "Dawn", one of those magical tunes that loop along but evolve with every listen. Intricate drums balance well with lush, minimalistic melodies. The Speicher series is approaching its 100th release. Where it goes, only they know, so savour the flavour while it lasts. ?
