Review: The first in a series from Pelvis Records, DJ Tools Volume 1 features an all Australian lineup of artists across six tracks. Varying in tempo and moods, this first round comes courtesy of Sam Weston, Mall Grab (his contribution "GTFO" is a gnarly 303 acid jam with one seriously angry monologue atop), Chunyin, Body Corp (with the tribal trance induction of "Vosa" which will take you deep into the exotic), Jamie Blanco (UK expat) and Pelvis. From flat out percussion jams to four-to-the-floor acid, these are tracks to get you out of tight spots... or take you deeper into them.
Review: Braiden's Off Out imprint has gotten off to a flying start and, with its third EP already, we're expecting big things from the label in the next year. Moreover, he's bringing out some new talent onto the scene, such as the mysterious Chunyin on this new EP. Don't be fooled, this ain't no middle of the road deep house; the sounds on both the label and this particular EP are wild and provocative, fresh and compelling. "Fei", for instance, wouldn't sound wrong if it were featured on a Nitzer Ebb release, and the same thing could be argued for the blasting beats and growling bass tones of "Emporium". "Shi" is the most broken of the three cuts, an off-kilter dance experiment with an ample and wide-eyed selection of sonics, plus some truly jiggling set of drums and percussion. Sweet.
