Review: The garage fever is seemingly not going anywhere as we carry on with the massive expansion of the genre into a brand new decade. One of our favourites here at Juno Download is most definitely CJ Reign, a producer whose consistency and originality really does see him rise to the top of the pile more often than not. We here see him land on 2TUF4U for a very tidy remix EP, as Sole Masters Inc, Odin Hardt & GG provide us with some sumptuous remixes of 'Gonna Fly'. Each remix is fantastic in it's own right, but the vibrant flavours and harmonic structures of Sole Masters Inc's re-think is a real standout on this one!
Review: It's a very exciting time to be a part of the UKG scene at the moment, as we see an enormous rise in the output of multiple labels and producers, the latest of which comes to us from 2TUF4U who push forward the latest album project from CJ Reign, a garage head who is receiving a lot of well deserved praise. The album is a real lesson in expanding a genre, as we see a full range of UKG on display, from the clever, clicky compositional structures of 'Falling Into You' and '2-4-7', to the more classic 2-step vibes of 'Broken' and more. For us the standout on this one has to be the super creative reesey twists of 'Certificated Day', which keeps us guessing from start to finish.
Review: Is there anything Strictly Flava can't do well? So far this year they have been without a doubt one of the strongest labels working in the realms of UKG, and that record is amplified even further on this latest release from CJ Reign. As a single, 'Move My Way' is a fantastically produced original, skipping between patois toasting and well processed harmonized vocal chops, creating a really cool sense of energy over some vibrant drum work and melodic structure. This one also comes complete with a stripped back dub mix, focussing more so on the potent basslines and sharp slices within the original.
Review: Urban Impulz founder CJ Reign digs deep into bass heritage with this highly accomplished UK garage session. With a loop vocal, obese sub bass warbles and unstoppable jacking groove, "Scream" is as timeless as it is classic. Remix-wise the hyperspeed special cut adds more bass and a cool breakbeat breakdown, the deeper groove adds a sense of swooning synth glamour-funk while the steppers bonus ends the set on a razor-sharp two-step twist. Scream if you want to go faster!
Various - "The Revolution" (continuous DJ Mix by DJ Kumatozz) - (1:09:02) 136 BPM
Review: Not only does this 18-track album promise an excellent selection of music, but the accompanying one-hour mixed version is mixed by DJ Kumatozz, who weaves the lush, blissed out sounds seamlessly together for the ultimate listening experience. Brought to you on the Bass Machine imprint, expect spaced out atmospherics, sonorous vocals and deftly placed beats to predominate, alongside some more pumping 4/4 beats to get the party started. The album kicks off with It Was Ted - "Crush" and takes us through such moments as Pledge - "Be Alrite (Arrows Of Time remix)" with is ticking beats and hypnotic rhythms, to SoundBwoy Addiction - "Jungle Sess (Private Mix)" which takes things a bit more streetwise with a clear grime influence. A lovely array of sounds are on offer here - be sure to check out the mix as well.
Brand New Life (CJ Urban Groove dub) - (5:48) 128 BPM
Brand New Life (Reign Energize dub) - (6:28) 132 BPM
Review: Polish producer CJ Reign has been producing tracks on his own Urban Impulze Records for some time now, but this release on Bass Machine is one of his deadliest productions to date. Kicking in with a flurry of tightly programmed 2-step drums and inbuilt rewinds, it launches into some huge bassline action with a production prowess that recalls Mosca's recent joints for Numbers. This comes with the "CJ Urban Groove dub" which offers a sharper production with lush house strings and cut-up vocals, and a dub from Reign Energize, who offers a sparse, clipped arrangement which shatters the original into tense micro-fragments held together with lush sweeps.
Crimzon - "Shower Your Love" (feat Meron - DJ Beenie Special) - (3:18) 129 BPM
Review: Mixed live by DJ Beenie, Garage Kiss: Sounds of the Underground Vol. 1 is a compilation that features 25 of the garage underground's biggest tracks, showcasing the best of the new wave of UK garage talent. Highlights include The Next Room's "Turning Point", whose horn samples recall Roy Davis Jr's classic "Gabriel", Fuzzy Logik's "Playground", which weaves a tightly rolling UK Funky beat and fat bassline around Myshy's catchy vocal action and jazzy, bright synth melody, and Danny B-Line's refix of Redlight's "Source 16", wrapping a bass squelch around rave whistles and hollow snares. As skillful as DJ Beenie's mixing is, the superb selections also come as unmixed original tracks.
