Review: "I decided to go for it and make a track just for Halloween based on the concept that a guy takes drugs and cannot figure out if he is in reality or a horror film," writes Claude VonStroke. He talking about this latest three track for October 31st - one original and two remixes. It's Halloween! A minimal tech house banger do doubt with a pitched vocal that's either addicted to crack or blood - we don't know - Steve Darko adds a layer of percussive groove and acid to his remix. For that extra dose, Mike Kerrigan turns up the synths in his remake that teeters on becoming electro while maintaining the stripped back groove of the original. Who got da creeps.

Highlights include Innervisions co-head Dixon's moody, tension-filled dub mix of "Urban Animal", Chi-town legend DJ Sneak bringing his unique brand of boompty-funk to a rework of label boss Claude Vonstroke's classic "Deep Throat", as well as veteran Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero's dancefloor drama version of Scavazza's "Shake Your Hearts" and label staple J.Phlip's version of Luca Lozano's "Berlinetta" among many others.

Review: Freaks & Beaks was Claude Von Stroke's last artist album, released in autumn 2020 at a time when the world was grappling with the impact of the pandemic. Now, two years later, with clubs and festivals re-opened, Dirtybird drops dance floor-primed remixes of tracks from the long player. The VNSSA remix of "These Notes In This Order" is a tough, pulsating slice of techno, while in contrast, for the reshape of "Youngblood", Rodriguez Jr. drops a stripped back, bleep-heavy workout. Nikki Nair has shot to prominence over the past few years, and this version of "Flubblebudd" shows why - based on a frequency shifting sub-bass, it's a distinctive electro track. Frankie also delivers a fine, off beat minimal take on "Frankie Goes To Bollywood".

Review: The Cocoon compilation series has become an unofficial state of the nation statement for modern house and techno, and the latest instalment is no exception. It features deep, Detroit styled grooves from Damiano van Erckert and Stephen Brown alongside more accessible minimal house from Claude Von Stroke and murky, analogue jams, including the layered, dubbed out Daniel Avery track, "Your Future Looks Different in the Light". The compilation series has also been successful in spotlighting emerging artists, and volume T is no exception, as it shines a light on Yokto's bass-heavy deep house and the swaggering electro-techno of Defekt's "Terraform".

Review: Dirtybird showcase their deeper side on a new 14-track complation featuring some of the label's best loved artists (Claude VonStroke, Julio Bashmore, Sascho Robotti, Pezzner) alongside a host of more up-and-coming names. There's quite a variety of sounds on offer here, with cuts ranging from the dreamy, bassy minimalism of opener "Aundy" to the pop leanings of Scavazza's "Shake Your Hearts". The best bits, though, come largely from the deepest end of the spectrum: Tom Flynn's Amp Fiddler collab "The Future" is a late-night, jazzy delight while Dernis and Robot Love bring us a couple of proper deep house bullets.

Review: Enjoying a hot streak of hugely appealing releases at the moment is Dirtybird thanks to Claude VonStroke and the likes of a recent Nikki Nair drop and now the introduction of Nala. Keeping the elements balanced on this Everything Is Burning single is the deep and sweetly melodic "Wet State" featuring those undeniable "Who's Afraid Of Detroit" melodies and atmospheres, tipped by Nala's sweet vocal splashes. A choice for the mellow heads for sure. "Everything Is Burning" sees the duo head into heavier club territory on a harder electro tip, with Nala's vocals reminiscent of Cheap and Deep's legendary, "Words, Beatles, Pauses". Recommended!

Review: Kicking it off with an undeniable Claude VonStroke 'uhh' on B-side track "The End Of The Lime", the Dirtybird boss hooks up with US house duo Walker & Royce, uh!. Keeping it mainstream and peak time of course is the lead cut with its burning synthlines and bass mechanics that burst with percussive hype and that trademark trippy sound Dirtybird have purported for a generation. Mainstage DJs check this out - but moving to the switch up is "The End Of The Lime" which throws down a laid back, lowly groove with crystal clear bleeps and explosions of detuned rave perfect for that ghostly back room set. Dirtybird. Happy days.

Review: As the story goes, a late night conversation about the past and future of dance music elicited this surprise left field collaboration from Justin Jay and Claude VonStroke. Jay's mission was simple: push VonStroke to the fringes. As Dirtybird express, VonStroke jumped at the idea of challenging creative expectations, with the result five and leftfield club tracks featuring the fine curation of a Pearson Sound remix which keeps it 'oh-so-minimal' - excuse the pun. An EP influenced by UK jungle, Detroit electro, Chicago juke and deconstructed hip hop inspirations that shaped much of the early Dirtybird sound, numbers like "Nucleus", "Poison" and "Woo" may differ radically but find themselves strung together by a sense of experimentation in polyrhythmic drum programming and dynamic, left of field arrangements. Originally distributed as a white label vinyl only release, this digital version is not to be missed.

Taking inspiration from the sense of humor shared between him and label partner Justin Martin, a love of experimentation with everything from hardware and modular synthesis to iPhone apps, and embracing genres as wide as ghetto tech, drum 'n' bass, hip-hop and breaks - together with his idiosyncratic style of minimal tech house. This is VonStroke's love letter to vibrancy and genre diversity. From the bass-driven acid jack of "Freaks Don't Fail Me Now", the trippy afterhours reductions of "Flubblebuddy" or "Youngblood (ft. Wyatt Marshall) to the influence of Bristol's similarly low-end driven sound as heard on "These Notes In Order" or for something different there's even a bit of blissed-out electronica - as heard on the evocative closer "Alpine Arpline".

Review: After a relentless touring schedule during the first half of 2017, Dirtybird head honcho Claude Vonstroke hit the studio with a couple of ace producers in the form of Will Clarke and Sebastien V. They collaborated on two giant singles for the Works Well With Others EP. Claude Vonstroke & Will Clarke team up first on "Tiny Tambourine", a dark and filthy tech house groove on the deep and druggy tip. Just listen to that gnarly 'womp' build and build into utter dancefloor madness: this one is huge! Secondly we have Claude VonStroke & Sebastien V with "Daylight Dark Room" an epic dose of acid with a whole heap of bump in the bass and no shortage of jack in the rhythm department. Perfect for getting weird in the early hours, if you ask us!

Review: It's hard to believe that it's been a decade since the release of "Detroit". To celebrate double figures, its author has released a sprawling "10 Year Anniversary mix", alongside the original version. The party doesn't end there though, and Dirtybird has also selected some impressive producers to rework it. Unsurprisingly, Marc Houle's take is a slinky, stripped back affair, while Octave One's interpretation mines the kind of tribal, percussive sound that the Burden brothers have made their own over the past two decades. Fused with the original version's brooding synths, it makes for a intoxicating techno groove. Finally, Visionquest bring the curtain down with a laid back, groovy house take on this modern-day classic.

Review: Mark Knight's label brings together some of the sounds that were showcased over the course of the ADE. Basement Jaxx kick start the compilation with the stomping disco house of "Never Say Never", while Harry Romero shows that he's not just a US house head. Working with Doorly, he drops "The Truth", a tough techno track, led by heavy claps. The techno influence lingers on Maceo Plex's "Conjure Superstar", which features an unusual combination of rave sirens and sublime, 808 State-style synths. As is the case in the wider electronic world, this reinvention of the past is in abundance on Amsterdam 2014 and apart from Plex's track, the most impressive contribution is Dosem's "Chase the Link", which sounds like a particularly dark version of vintage Lil Louis.
