Review: Well, the UK's Shifting Peaks have really gone and done it with this latest leviathan of a compilation, an anthology of their best and most wanted from 2010 until now. Inside, there's talent and plenty of club antics bouncing off the wall left, right and centre; with over fifty cuts there's enough to go around and satisfy a whole artillery of bass-heads. Some of the stand-outs for us are Tessela's "Yes You Can", Hackman's "Always", "Put You Down" by Odessa, and OM Unit's remix of "Reach Out" by Nphonix. What a belter,
go forth and indulge!
Review: 2011's hotly tipped newcomer, Clueless, starts 2013 with a bang with this newie on Kursed Recordings. It's good to hear that he's still pursuing his 'bass-step' agenda with an unstoppable fervour: The jumpy "Aha" sounds like a synthy vintage garage cat on a particularly hot tin roof, "Ghost Ship" is deep speed garage with sultry vocals and totally haunted bass (a la Actress), "I Feel For You" sounds like he's cut up SFA's Flowers into a jigsaw and put it back together randomly. Finally the pop vibes are dispelled by the virtually serial killer atmospherics of the monumental "Kick Dub".
Review: One of the most progressive champions of the genre known tenuously as future-garage, the L2S label has championed a phalanx of upcoming producers over the last two years and now celebrates its 50th release with this, their first full-length album. 2-step masher Clueless delivers a masterclass in beats 'n' bass here - just check out the heavy snares and jumbled acapellas in "Bruksteppa" or the effusive Detroit-in-space pads of "Phuture" to see what we mean. With the paced-up, old-school speed-garage of "Jazz Lick" also proving a favourite, Clueless has delivered that rare thing - a dance album that is all killer and no filler.
