Review: As ever with the legendary Breakbeat Paradise crew, we are tuned in for another super exciting project as they amass a fantastic roster for the third edition of their 'Breakin The Riddem' compilation series. We see originals from the likes of Venture, Capital, Liberty Chaps, Mined & Forest and more, showcasing a vivid range of dancehall and reggae inspired reworks. For us the stand outs on this one come from firstly Ocelus, who provides a super clean dubwise wave on 'Steppas', along with Pecoe who switches the script up entirely for a grizzly breakbeat anthem entitled 'Bad Man Fiyah'.
Review: And just like that it's time to dive back into a bag of breakbeat brilliance as Cockney Nutjob and Kurnel MC join forces with Cuttin' It Fine across four brand new originals. The title track 'Unity' packs a real punch between the soulful groovy sample chops and enthused vocal lines, before we float into the more uplifting progressions of 'Drenched'. Next, we amble into the viewing of 'Parents Anthem' which again builds on harmonic structures and charming chord movements, before we finish up the release with a look at 'Get it', a pleasing breaksy roller, designed to lift the mood of any dance.
Review: Roast Beatz' Cuttin It Fine imprint hits its second outing with a fine motley collective of friends proffering party treats; Cockney Nutjob tip toes around the broken glass, pushing us closer to the edge over a sunny side skank on "Roar", El Bomba tells us to shut up and pay attention over a classic loose limbed funk break, B-Side Roast Beatz get emotional and dreamy over a rolling, subby 808 beat before flipping into a vibrant D&B finale on "Un-Fadeable" before the bossman brings home the bacon and pulls off the pork with the most upbeat, party bumping jam. Whoop, there it is....
Review: For this highly anticipated second volume of 'Breakin The Riddim', Breakbeat Paradise have got an awesome tracklisting and roster together to showcase the fusion of dub and funk into breakbeat compositions. For us the immediate highlights have to be the the reggae infused design of 'Meditation' from Leygo, the smooth patois vocal presence and from Richard Smiths on 'Fire Sound' from Illgorhythms and of course the crunchy drum design and writhing bass tones on Pecoe's 'Boom'. Overall this is a great compilation, showcasing a vast array of styles without diverting from the common theme of the project.
Review: A self-confessed cockney wannabe (he's originally from Essex), Cockney Nutjob, has built quite a reputation for himself releasing agreeable jams for the likes of Radical Mixtape and BreakBeat Paradise. He's also a pretty formidable DJ too, but here it's about his productions and his come up with four party sizzlers for Spinforth's Scour label. Breaking it all down, the vibe for this EP is a fusion of retro 90s rapping fused with bouncy breaks and summery Ska rhythms and its total house party dynamite!
Review: DJ Badboe and Wiccatron's Brekabeat Paradise Recordings masterfully re-enter our charts with their singular approach to breakbeat and electro - this time with a mini compilation! The Danish label has to be given a shout-out for having always done what they believe in, and it's clear they got their strategy right. The numbers don't lie, and these guys provoke quite a few downloads on the ol' Juno system. Breakin The Riddim is a wild and diverse affair, full of sampling grace and brimming with party-ready material in every sense of the word. All of it, however, is heavily centered around break sampling and an audible 'ragga' influence - tunes from DJ Maars, Basschimp, Leygo, Cockney Nutjob and Fredy High are the only solution to any bashment or dancehall DJ wanting to fire the place up!
Review: Four reggae-riddled bootlegs from breakbeat's favourite Nutjob. We kick off with a bulbous flip on Desmond Dekker's "Easy" before 'lively mode' is activated with a very well polished take on a classic reggae version of Smokey Robinson's "My Girl". You want to get even livelier? Look no further than "Heads Boppin'", Nutjob's twist on The Selector's "On My Radio". "I'm Skankin' Out" is the cherry on top of this very tasty cake. Adding a Jamaican sparkle to the Diana Ross sampling Biggie classic, Nutjob's successfully fused hip-hop, disco, reggae and breaks all into one track... And he's done so in style.
Review: Breakbeat specialists Scour turn in the fifth chapter of their Scoured Cream series and as you'd expect, it's all beats and instantly seductive basslines. Sitting somewhere between breaks and electro, these tracks are guaranteed to get any party on its way, especially if it involves university dormitories or student unions! Our tops picks have to be Phibes' "Needles" for thos soulful vocal samples, "Rockin' Cold" by Rollomatik and Cockney Nutjob's "Firepower" for the undeniable comic effect of that sample...you'll know what we mean!
Review: Remix time! Now a standard jam among the nu-funk fraternity, "Get Up On Ya Feet" gets two highly respectful reversions in time for the festival season. DJ Maars tempers down the vibe with a ghostly skank and steady stomp that surges with raw command. Phibes, meanwhile, refocuses the funk by way of a sopping wet bass tone and short, sharp vocal shots. Both kill it, bringing the original into exciting new territories. For added remix pressure Radical Mixtape have also recruited Cashgroove for a masterfully dark slow-jungle twist on "Watch This". Ensuring the very well-known old skool vocal sample (Leviticus - "Burial") is brought to the fore, his stuttering drums and rich bass textures press all the right buttons.
Review: Sometimes a record's title simply nails the vibe contained within. Bournemouth's Cockney Nutjob's failsafe formula of mixing hip-hop samples with funky breakbeats hasn't failed yet. Here "Get On Up Ya Feet" is a rousing House Of Pain-style jam with a little Rasta magic sprinkled on top. Meanwhile "Watch This" is all about an electro-funk stomp with hand-in-the-air chant samples. Boom!
Review: Taking the classic B.I.G and Busta jam "Flava In Ya Ear" and laying it over a heavy funk organ riff and tried and tested big beat breakbeats, Cockney Nutjob has excelled himself on "Liar". Ticking every box from ghetto to groovy, it's an instant pleaser, and comes complete with cool machine gun noises. "Ya Game Is Tight" is equally ace. Taking Cam'Ron's breakthrough sexy jam "Hey Ma" and smothering it in worm-like bass and cheeky horn motifs, your floor will be 300 per cent steamier when you drop this. Guaranteed.
Review: A very clever couplet of booties from Bournemouth breaker Nutjob here; "Hit It" takes a classic hip-hop bass sample from The Franklinz and dresses it in one of Biggie's finest. With a few more surprises thrown in midway, it's nu funk at its slinkiest. Boost the tempo? Look no further than "Hit Me", a bubbling caldron of samples and shockers, including samples from a disco funk rendition of Magnum P.I. Hit Nutjob up today!
