Review: If you're going to launch a label, it helps if the imprint's debut release is a doozy. Hot Gorilla have therefore smashed it out of the park with "The Goodnight EP", which comes courtesy of Arcade 82 member Mark Pickup under his increasingly familiar Conan The Selector alias. "Goodnight" is an infectious slab of good-time nu-disco rich in crunchy house drums, funky bass, life-affirming horns, Chic style guitars and ear-pleasing lead vocals from guest singer Sherie. Andy Buchan provides the first remix, beefing up the bottom end whilst giving greater prominence to Pickup's heady horns, before Cuz Electric brilliantly re-imagine the track as a synth-laden slab of 1980s NYC freestyle/mid-tempo electrofunk fusion.
Review: The world's most famous Irish-Iranian DJ/producer serves up a fourth collection of disco and boogie re-edits on his own Re-Loved label. The album features 19 full-length tracks plus two hour-long mixed versions from Haji himself, and the artist roster reads like a Who's Who of the re-edit scene, featuring as it does names like Dr Packer, Chewy Rubs, Birdee and Chuggin' Edits. What's most pleasing, though, is the non-obvious nature of the tracklist: sure, Ian Ossia's opener 'Someone To Count' borrows from Dennis Edwards but that's about as far as we got with trying to identity source material before shrugging our shoulders and just sitting back to enjoy...
Review: No slapsash edits here, just some cheery nu-dsco positivity from sometime Re-Loved re-editor Conan The Selector and guest vocalist Sherie. Her lead vocal is superb - think classic soulful house meets screaming disco diva - while Conan's backing track on "Disco Lights" is rich in twinkling piano motifs, handclap-heavy percussion, rich disco grooves and clipped, Chic style guitars. Conan's original version comes backed with two solid reworks, too. First Andy Buchan gives the track a slightly more electronic feel on his synth-laden nu-diusco revision, before Ash Reynolds layers delay-laden vocal snippets above a deep and dreamy disco-house groove on his headline-grabbing remix.
