Conrad Subs (real name Ad Krolik) has been producing Drum & Bass Jungle music for over 20 years. He has gone under many names in the past: ADK, Nifty and Sulako to name a few, but after taking a small break he returned to production in 2017 under the new alias Conrad Subs and quickly established himself as a rising talent in the scene.
Early releases on labels such as Soul Deep, Inna Rhythm and DJ Hybrid’s Deep in the Jungle showcased Conrad’s diverse sound - Liquid, Jump Up, Jungle… All styles were present in his arsenal, and things quickly gained momentum.
Fast forward a few years and Subs now has a wealth of dancefloor classics in his discography. From the anthemic ‘Revival’ on Ram Records, ‘Cool Off’ on Symmetry and ‘Little Vibey Thing’ on Nuusic, to a feast of dancefloor fire on Deep in the Jungle including anthems such as ‘Come Selecta’, ‘When It’s Time’, ‘Special Request’ and ‘The Rhythm’. With other releases on highly respected labels such as Liquid V, Program, Dread, Delta9, Soulvent, Murky, Liondub International and his own imprint Koba Audio, plus a 2019 We Love Jungle Awards nomination for Best Breakthrough Producer, there is no stopping Conrad Subs.
Review: The most prolific man in drum & bass, Conrad Subs returns to Ray Keith's Dubplate Dread for the first time since 2020 with a humungous wedge of wallopers. Seven cuts in total, each one of them tailored for those magic 3am moments, big moments range from the gruesome growls and grizzles of 'Octavirus' to the pure raucous shreds and slaps of the title track 'Real Dread', a cut which really does live up to its name. Oh boy, this could well be Conrad Subs' mightiest EP so far, which is really saying something. Real talk.
Review: Next up from the ever-ready Liondub International, a throwback filled to the brim with lethal flavours as Conrad Subs touches down to deliver four tracks of pure dancefloor fire. We open up with the unpredictable synthetic twitches and reesey rumbles of 'Rave Report', setting the tone of the project nicely before 'Dough' gives us a more minimal fusion of growling bass notes and sharpened drum designs. Next, 'Big Chungus' opens up the roof for an even harder hitting sub-line, upping the ante even further as we move forward, with Speaker Louis providing some additional work on the well thought out rhythmic arrangements of 'Shots Fired'. Another tidy collection from the Liondub dynasty.
Review: Oh gosh! Every Welcome To The Jungle collection is a big deal but this latest edition from Euphonique and Dazee is a whole other rain forest. 96 tracks and a mix that weighs in over two hours, this is the sound of two of the most foremost and inspiring Bristol-based DJs going IN in every single direction. Loaded with a great range of classics, exclusives and left-of-centre vibes, highlights across this massive collection include Aries and Euphonique's massive 'Amen', Dazee & Jinx's 'Shake It Up', Sweetpea and Chickaboo's 'The Jump Off' and the recent skat-dancing fire-up 'Skip De Du Dat'. And that's not scratching the surface. This is an epic collection. Essential.
Review: Oh gosh! Whether you're massively into Deep In The Jungle but you've got a few holes in your collection that need filling, or you've just started getting into this side of the music, this 60+ anthem collection is an amazing resource for all modern day junglists. Curated by bossman DJ Hybrid, this collection takes us back through the label's history and cherry picks an amazing array of peaktime wounders, bruisers and bubblers. To pick one or two highlights from such a generous collection doesn't feel right so let us advise you to take in that tracklist, press play and totally vibe out to some of the best jungle bangers made in the last 11 years. Mad love to the DITJ crew!
Review: Holy moly to the power of roly-poly; Bristol rave OG Vinyl Junkie feeds our collective jungle fatness fix with this walloping collection of bangers from some of the most consistent, reliable and authentic craftsfolk in the contemporary game. From Conrad Subs to Veak, SuM to Sanxion, Unkoded to Kumarachi to Kickback, this 29-track strong collection of exclusive breakbeat gems sparkles from every perspective as it runs from deep, pensive groove pressure (Ikon B - 'Run With It') to absolutely stinking murk missions (DJ Direkt - 'TestDEAD') with all vibes and grooves in between. Ghetto fabulous.
Review: Blimey Conrad Subs is on a mission this year. It's been non-stop roll-outs, rinse-out and slap-abouts throughout the year. Especially on his own label Koba Audio. Here's a great example. Following massive dispatches such as 'History Lesson' and 'Horizon Leans Forward' comes the second collection of 'Straight Up Jungle' work-outs. Big subby foundations, wild breakbeat funk, authentic grooves from the start to finish, highlights include the early Bristol-style bubbles of 'Rep', the super sweet funk and surprise drum fills of 'Like Honey' and the squiggly finale 'Over Sub'. Think Full Cycle and you're in the right ravey velodrome.
Review: As 2023 starts to wrap up, Manchester label Nuusic take the time to reflect on the year they've had and bring their many releases together in one comprehensive collection. Looking back over key releases such as Guzi's album Goldstone Life, Grimesy's 'Voices' and Conrad Subs' 'Don't Blame The DJ', there's a powerful range of party starters, bubblers, skankers and slappers. To pick just a few highlights from 30 is pretty hectic, but Tweakz' jazzy planet stamper 'Love & loyalty', Rise's creeped out 'Intertwined' and Guzi & Epicentre's walloping 'Rate My Switch' are a great place to start. If you've got any holes in your Nuusic collection, now's your chance to get stuck in.
Review: Holy smokes! Deep In The Jungle is now 10 years old! Huge props to the label bossman - and all-round G - DJ Hybrid who's smashed the label's repertoire and reputation over the years. Just look at the artists who've contributed to the label over the years. Lavery, Sl8r, Hungry T, RMS, Conrad Subs, Epicentre and so many more established jungle talents have all enjoyed a DITJ boost over the years and this massive VA is a reminder of that. 50 cuts from across the last decade, we're not even going to insult the rollcall here picking highlights - this is a huge collection that's essential for anyone looking to stack up on authentic jungle productions and represent one of the coolest, most consistent labels in the jungle dnb world.
Review: The unstoppable Conrad Subs presents his second LP and it's a powerful collection that celebrates the timeless art of the album. Deep, dynamic and full of big surprises, it's his most consistent and hard hitting release so far. Opening with the epic emotions of 'Dream Sequence', he hurls us down a cinematic breakbeat rabbit hole, taking us along a whole range of vibes and styles that flex from the stunning Klute-like emotional hurricane 'Answers' to the Sub Focus-like dancefloor sweeper 'Helter Skelter'. Other highlights include the piano-tickling lament-fuelled 'No Matter', the techno influenced 'Temper' and the high voltage urgency of 'Ultraviolent'. An exceptional body of work.
Review: Original Key's Faces Of Jungle series has been a consistent and prolific platform for some pretty exceptional and heavy hitting slabs of breakcraft sorcery in the last year. Name a currently active artist in jungle and D&B and there's a chance they've flexed here... As collection of the last four VAs proves. All styles and sounds should be expected from the juicy jump-up disco funk of Bassface Sascha & Fiendsoul's 'Back To Basics' to the Amen artillery of Sykes' 'Exit' via Veak's wild sub soaker 'Rebel' and Bring The Beat Mack's party-blazing 'Oh My Gosh', this collection digs deep across the board giving a lot of hugely talented artist a platform and spotlight. Face the music!
Review: Time for a reload! DJ Hybrid's Deep In The Jungle look back over the last few years of skankings, tear-ups and vibe missions and curate them all in this awesome compilation that stretches the entire jungle drum & bass spectrum. From the classic Bristol style bubbles and bumps of cuts like Conrad Subs' 'It Goes On' to the more traditional junglistic savagery of cuts like Lupo's 'Retrograde', over 30 cuts we're treated to some beautiful 174BPM moments. Other highlights include the emotional 'Must Remember' from Critycal Dub, the powerful and poignant energy of the late great JDizz and the undying rawness of man like Kumarachi. This is awesome music.
Review: When Guns N Roses welcomed everyone to the jungle all those years ago they promised fun and games. That's fine and dandy but these days a jungle welcoming requires a little more substance... Like stacks of crucial forefront D&B jungle tracks and a vibe that feels like you've spent 3 days straight raving at the Roller Express. And this crew of new-gen heroes - Toby Ross, 4K, Oram and Rise - are the guys to deliver those stacks. Like all previous Jungle Cakes Welcome To The Jungle mix compilations, the selection is diverse and covers all shades and styles from unreleased gold to undisputed classics. All the tracks are available in their full length glory and there's a mix to boot. Trust us, no one is doing it like Jungle Cakes right now. And no one is doing it like Toby Ross, 4K, Oram and Rise too for that matter. One of the best editions so far!
Review: Kleu takes charge of the latest Welcome To The Jungle compilation with an explosive collection of tracks that are sure to set any dancefloor alight. With over 50 hand-picked drum and bass selections from top artists such as Conrad Subs, Benny Page, Veak, Gold Dubs, Bladerunner, and the Jungle Cakes catalogue, as well as Kleu's own unreleased tracks, this album is a must-have for any fan of the genre. Notable tracks include the hard-hitting 'Dragon Soop', a tribute to the popular off-license drink with punchy drums, airy pads, and a fierce bassline, the feel-good rave anthem 'Got The Feeling' featuring bouncy piano melodies and catchy vocal samples, and the energetic 'Shake Ya Body Like Dis' with its hyped-up vocals, heavy bass hits, and weighty low end. Kleu's selection is flawless and guaranteed to keep the ravers happy. Don't miss out on adding Welcome To The Jungle to your collection!
Review: Fire in the hole! Actually, with Commix, Bungle, Zero T, Sevin, L-Side, Lynx, HLZ and Paul T & Edward Oberon all remixing, we should probably make that EPIC INFERNO in the hole. As you'd expect from such a top shelf rollcall, the vibes are premium across this multi-EP release. Highlights include the wry, trippy funk of Sevin's remix, the horn-heaving glory of Lynx's sci-fi skank-up and of course the most firesome finale possible - Paul T & Edward Oberon ripping Conrad Subs to pieces on 'Fury'. Someone call the fire brigade!
Review: Destination NYC: Liondub International look back over their last year of releases with this almighty 25 track collection of highlights. As always with Liondub's broad and highly international church, the vibes go the full flex from classic dancehall jungle to epic jump-up tear-ups. Highlights include Bladerunner's savage Amen assault 'Jungle Strike', the big vocal licks and even big bassline snorts of JNGL's remix 'Worldwide' and Original Sin's absolutely despicable twist on the Riko Dan-front 'War Ting'. And that's just the tip of this junglistic iceberg. Don't sleep on this one!
Review: All good things must come to an end... DJ Hybrid's Deep In The Jungle Anthems VA series reaches its final volume, giving him time to develop other awesome ways to bring some of the freshest and talented new artist and contemporary jungle to our sets, ears and hearts. Naturally the series ends with a massive bang as we're pummelled with 38 sizzling slabs of freshness from a whole host of skilled producers from Fez to Sum to DJ Gaw to Guzi and Epicentre to Conrad Subs and so many more. Consistently mapping and pushing the boundaries of the modern jungle sound and forever championing the new breed, every single Deep In The Jungle Anthems collection has been a vintage. Make sure you collect them all. Salute to DJ Hybrid!
Review: The unstoppable Subster returns with yet more beefy breakbeat bangers to slap liberally on your chops. Four cuts, four opportunities to wheel up and wind up your dancefloor as Conrad tells us how it is. 'Don't Blame The DJ' sets the tone with a sick GQ sample and a warning about leaky roofs. 'Good Good Dub' brings a little dubwise skanky panky to the mix while 'IPS' goes for that old school stabby vibe with precision and tension. Finally man like Aries steps up for a ridiculously sick remix of Conrad's previous Nuusic outing 'Little Vibey Thing'. Don't blame the download store if this melts your next dancefloor.
Review: DJ Hybrid's Deep In The Jungle continues to smash 2022 to pieces even with its 2023 releases... Here lies a sampler of the label's first big release of the new year 'Deep In The Jungle Anthems' from three super talented names across the DITJ spectrum. Lowriderz and Smoky D get the party started with the super crispy and toasty rattler named in tribute to the main man himself 'Hybrid Skank', newcomer Fez smashes us to pieces with a sick UKG sampling monster 'Girls Like Us' while the unstoppable Conrad Subs closes the EP with walloping 'Shakin'. Dig deep!
Review: The unstoppable Nuusic crew take time to look back over the last few years of releases and put together this massive 30 track collection of the finest jungle jams they've blessed the world with to date. Featuring the likes of DJ Hybrid, Conrad Subs, Speaker Louis, Kumo, Sl8r, Kumarachi, Veak, Teej and many more, the vibes range from deep space shock-outs ('Back To Me') to peak time bubblers ('Duppy') to all-out breakbeat frenzies ('Jungle Mania') and all fire flavours in between. Essential for all junglists.
Review: Now on their sixth Jungle To The World collection, Liondub International and Marcus Visionary get straight into their stride with this latest gigantic collection of contemporary jungle slap-abouts. Some massive names, too... Aries, Dawn Raid, Nicky Blackmarket, Conrad Subs, Mark XTC, Exile and many more contribute to this mission of murkery as we're pinged around from rumbling bassline to neck-snap breakbeat. Highlights include Selecta J-Man's bubblesome head-topper 'Jungle Stepper', B-Plexx's jump-up infused tear-up 'Playa' and Conrad Subs' rave-ready wobbler 'Love Is Passion'. Worldly wise.
Review: The unstoppable Conrad Subs returns to Liondub with this absolutely firing four-piece that flexes across the whole D&B jungle spectrum. 'Ravers' lights the fire with smashed up breakbeat action before '4U' takes us deep into the lesser-spotted paranoid side of Conrad's sound. 'Under Pressure' meanwhile is another wild ride back on the breakbeat train before 'Proper Things' closes with some of the most rumbly subs you'll hear all month. Pure batteridge!
