Cormac

Cormac, once a hidden gem in dance music, has risen to prominence as his reputation as a revered selector has rapidly spread. Hailing from Northern Ireland, the queer DJ has gained respect for his knowledge of HI-NRG, Italo-House, and Techno.
He was a fixture at numerous seminal London clubs such as Nag Nag Nag, Trade and Bugged Out! His sets have graced major events like Sonar Festival, Glastonbury, Pollerweiseen, WHOLE, Circo Loco, Robert Johnson and Adonis. In Berlin and across Europe, Cormac is celebrated for his epic closing sets at Panorama Bar and Snax, sometimes lasting up to eleven hours. With free rein to explore diverse sounds, he has become a fixture in the club's lineup, keeping the crowd engaged till Monday morning with his extensive 20 years of DJ expertise.
Cormac launched his own label, Polari Records, in 2021. The label, named after old-school gay slang, features LGBTQ+ artists and collectible artwork. In May 2024, Polari Records held its first event at Panorama Bar. Cormac's BBC Radio 1 Essential mix showcased unreleased tracks from Polari alongside his debut solo release, “Heartcore”. His releases have also featured on Ostgut-Ton and Running Back Records.
He holds a monthly residency on Rinse FM. In May 2023 he dropped his acclaimed Resident Advisor Mix, and a fun-filled set for ARTE at TXL airport. He has been the cover story in fashion magazines in Germany and the UK, with a mix and interview for DJ mag in Spring of 2024.
His podcast, Cormac's Queerly Beloved, launched in January 2024. It features insightful interviews with LGBTQIA+ artists and allies, exploring the role of music in their lives. As an interviewer, Cormac brings warmth and sensitivity, drawing on his background in psychology and his journey from Northern Ireland to his work as a queer health advocate.

Review: Italo nouveau specialist David Jackson, perhaps best known for 2020's 'Airport Disco', joins forces with like-minded ex-pat Northern Irishman Cormac, a veteran of the mid-00s Trash/Nag Nag Nag/Wet Yourself electroclash heyday who's busy these days with his Queerly Beloved podcast, his Polari label and his regular Rinse show. Together, they come to Running Back with a track that's pure 80s in feel and that owes a clear debt of inspiration to Depeche Mode. Label boss Gerd Janson's remix wonks things out a little more towards the end, while if you're not feeling the vocal there's also an instrumental included.

Review: As its title suggests, the latest compilation on Bpitch gives vent to the label's deeper side. It begins with Chaim's "Rain", where jazzy textures bubble to the surface over dubby beats. The track has an ethereal, almost subdued feeling to it and is in stark contrast to the raucous minimalism that Bpitch is sometimes associated with. This understated approach isn't confined to Chaim's contribution however; even more dance floor tracks like the pumping bass of Cormac's "The Present" are teeming with emotive undercurrents and Kassem Mosse's version of Ellen Alien's "Our Utopie" sees a series of chiming bells prevail over a pumping groove.

Review: If two years ago you'd said to even the most open-minded BPitch Control fan that the diverse label would be putting out soulful torch songs in 2011, they would have questioned your sanity. However, that's exactly what's happened. On Werkschau, the latest compilation from Ellen Allien's Berlin imprint, the centrepiece is the smoky, seductive soul of Jahcoozi's "Day In, Day Out". It's not an aberration: the other highlights here are characterised by a focus on deeply personal contributions. Be it the muffled vocals on Chaim's dub techno, Sascha Funke's unforgettably melodic techno poem, "Hiddensee" or Kiki & Lenz and Zander VT's explorations of disco-fuelled, vocal-led house on "Morning Maniacs" and "Gotta Look Up To Get Down" respectively, every shared experience is worth its weight in gold.
