Review: Joining dots between two sounds that came from the same mindset and very similar streets and cultural context, Influence Records have curated something incredibly special here with 'Diaries From Detroit'; a VA collection boasting some of the most talented names across the D&B generations from Seba to Conrad Subs. All exploring those cold futuristic aesthetics that both jungle and Detroit techno share, highlights can be found at every twist and turn but you'd be crazy not to check the likes of subtleties and immense subs of A Audio's 'Mercury', the ice cold grumbles of Lynx's 'De-Tro' and the shimmering dub techno influences on L-Side's powerful 'Point Of View'. What a collection.
CPH & Jay Dubz - "Shadow Of The Past" - (6:02) 172 BPM
Review: Previously spotted on Soul Deep's Unsung Heroes LP last year, D&B freshman CHP presents his official debut EP for the LA label. "Never Again" is a classic example of deep bass soul where the heavy subs and delicate melodic elements balance each other perfectly in a smooth solid way. "Shadow Of The Past" sees him teaming up with jungle compadre Jay Dubz with a darker, hurricane roller with a shadowy bass and an iciness that's not dissimilar to an old Commix cut. Never say never.
Review: if the title doesn't say it all (and it really should) then the label's consistent ethos to discover fresh talent around the world certainly will. Soul Deep have been whittling this stick for years, bring us names who've been criminally overlooked before and bringing it all together with a usually blissful, bright and breezy signature. The LA label's first Unsung Heroes package since last November here we find Eschaton adding a "Horizons" style twist to "Forest Sunlight" we're in air piano heaven on Mosiac Theory's "Infinite" and we go loopy to the classic liquid dynamics of Rodrigo's "Improvisacion De Iluvia". And that's just three of 16 cuts on offer here. Soul Deep a truly spoiling us.
