Review: Following on from a series of diverse, at times pop-leaning releases, DJ Godfather goes back to his Detroit roots on Killshot. The title track is a frenetic piece of high-tech jazz, with dramatic chords and strings swooping in over a frenetic metallic rhythm. "Funk For The Trunk" is a killer electro track, with Godfather fusing splurging acid with a menacing bass and an angular rhythm. The sum of these parts is an uncompromising but funky workout. And Godfather remains in similar territory for "Subterranean Tech Beat". Based on a barrelling groove, its high frequency tones and relentless percussion prime it for peak-time use.

Review: Another week, another DJ Godfather release. The veteran Detroit producer is in a creative purple patch right now, and That Booty is a reminder of the range and depth of his sound. It moves from the title track's primal ghetto tech swing -and Lil Mz 313's suggestive vocals - to the soulful, R&B-tinged groove of "Till It's All Gone". It too features a vocalist - in this instance it's Ricky Burns's seductive tones. Godfather delivers a reflective interlude in the shape of "Footwerkz". However, it's only a temporary pause and soon enough, he bounces back with the jacking, vocal-tinged ghetto of "Not Me" and "Smokin' Up Yo Weed".

Review: DJ Godfather is in the middle of a creative purple patch, and Hypnotized is the latest in a series of releases from the Detroit artist. The title track has a pop sensibility, thanks to the use of a catchy, vocoder vocal. Looped over rolling breaks, it has the potential to be a hit. In contrast, "Table Terrorist", available here in two versions, sees Godfather indulge his hip-hop leanings. Call and response vocals vie with turntablist scratches and cuts for the listener's attention. Of course, the sound of ghetto is never too far away on a Godfather release. In this instance, it comes in the form of the high-octane "Damn It's Fat", which features Ricky Burns' captivating rhymes.

Review: DJ Godfather has released a slew of material recently, and on his latest EP, he takes aim at a particular demographic within the DJ community. Hooking up with rapper Goodmoney G100, the title track calls out his peers who 'stand in the booth, pressing sync buttons'. Realised against the backdrop of a bruising electro funk rhythm, it's a compelling call out of modern DJ culture. On "Damage Control", the storied Detroit producer shows a deeper side - playing out over a robust bass, mysterious synths call to mind Drexciyan mystique. In contrast, "Down Woodward Avenue" sees him stay in an esoteric place, but this time the focus is on chord-heavy techno. "Count Back" is classic Godfather electro, with speak and spell vocals and otherworldly tones playing out over a frenetic rhythm.

Review: DJ Godfather has always gone his own way, and this EP is no exception. The title track serves up a more dystopian take on his trademark sound as he invites the listener on a journey through his hometown. Powered by crisp drums and eerie synths, the track's centrepiece is a foreboding vocal. In contrast, there's the jittery ghetto tech of "Godfather L.I.V.E.", while on "She Gettin' Hits", he presents another side. Underpinned by a throbbing, ebm-style groove, it features Goodmoney G100 delivering an insistent rap. Returning to his roots, Godfather closes out the release with the old school Detroit electro of "That Street Beat".

Experience the sound of mechanoids going to battle on "That Electro Shit" before Brian Jeffries delivers a thumping late night house jam on the impressive "1200s Are Lit". "Intergalactic Funk" loves up to its title on this typically soulful hi-tech jam, and "Oh Shit" (feat Goodmoney G100) goes back to the seminal DJ Godfather sound of old which gets seriously deep, down and dirty as we like it.

Review: Detroit electro icon DJ Godfather returns this week with the latest release on his ever reliable Databass imprint. "Hold Up" is next in a series of 11 EPs and sees him collaborate with Chicago booty bass pioneer DJ Deeon. This is the guy who laid down the foundations for what Godfather would soon expand upon with his explorations in the 'ghettotech' sound. Needless to say, the results make for one seriously down and dirty dancefloor workout. Elsewhere, the hi-tech soul beats of "Let's Talk Some Jit" equally satisfies, as does the emotive mood music of "Shake Them" and the in-your-face bass attack of closing cut "Squo?"

Review: It's great to see Detroit pioneer DJ Godfather back releasing music regularly. Hot on the heels of It's Ghetto Tech, he drops this new, diverse release. The title track is a dark, stepping electro roller. Featuring an insistent synth riff, grinding bass and deft hip-hop scratches, it's less frenetic than Godfather's typical material, but no less funky. "Can't C Me" sees him follow a similar approach, with falsetto vocals added to the mix. Godfather reverts to his trademark ghetto tech sound for "Bass Drop". Featuring Lil Mz 313, the interplay between jittery rhythm and call-and-response vocal are irresistible. Changing tact again, "Assassin On The Decks" resounds to melodic piano lines and warbling acid swirls.

Review: Styles and fads may come and go, but thankfully DJ Godfather remains a constant. He has been releasing high-paced dance music for almost 30 years, and he remains at the forefront of a sound he has pioneered. The title track is a frenetic banger, based on all the usual Godfather elements - high-pace electro drums, vocals loops chopped to pieces and a primal low end. "Ghetto Tech" also features Dan Diamond riffing about what the sound entails. The release boasts some fine instrumental versions. The "Chapter 1" take is led by dramatic ominous stabs and nagging percussion, while the second "Chapter" focuses more on bleepy electro influences. However, it's "Chapter 4", in all its primal rhythm, sub-bass glory that really capture the essence of DJ Godfather, and by extension, the ghetto tech sound.

Review: The undisputed Godfather of Motor City ghettotech returns on his esteemed Databass imprint with "Warehouse Musik", taken from the forthcoming LP 'This Detroit Thing Of Ours'. The title track sees the man known to his Mum as Brian Jeffries go for a more straight-up techno vibe on this hypnotising acid techno belter, which comes with several other tracks on this extended EP. Other highlights include the brooding electro bass of "You Can't Stop This", the proper 313 state of mind on "East Side - West Side" (feat Goodmoney G100) which is something more familiar of the DJ Godfather's style, and the hi-tech computer funk of "Freq Me".

Review: Detroit ghettotech icon Brian Jeffries aka DJ Godfather should require no introduction. The Databass chief is back with a new offering titled D3T.3L3CTR0. It's his fifth long player which does exactly what it says on the tin, featuring 16 tracks of pure form electro executed by one of the Motor City's most distinguished engineers. From the robo-futurist groove of "TH3Y'V3 ARR1V3D", moving into the most dystopian of funk on "ATTACK F1R5T", re-programming another sci-fi bass attack on "R3P0PULAT3" and towards the end he makes contact - with the deep space alien transmission of "TH3 AFT3R 3FF3CT".

With more undeniable Detroit electro and tongue-in-cheek ghetto tech on hand, the highlight this time may well come from the deep house, R&B, soul and funk touches you'll get outta "Late Night Funk". Get your straight up vocal club tracks with a touch of late-fidget in "Owe You Shit (feat Lil Mz 313)" with some Egytian Lover beatbox electro landing in "313 Keeps It Down" (and its bonus acapella clap track). And for another slice of peak time, acid-tinged, 808 club music that's the real deal, obviously, it's "Do It".

Review: 'If you ain't got no 1200s from back in the days youse a wack DJ' preaches the Goodmoney vocal from DJ Godfather's lead cut "Wack DJ" - coming in just behind this EP's title-track "Wooooo!" Turning toward some Miami bass, beats and style in "Wooooo!" - with its stuttering horns, ruff vocal chants and skipping rhythms - "Only One City" ups the tempo for a hybrid rave, electro and dub techno number that sits next to something more percussive and dank in "Nights At The Packard". Review: DJ Godfather rains down a chunk more of lightning bolt dancefloor music with this Loud Mouth EP, taking in tips from Pharoahe Monch in a cheeky "Godzilla 2020 (Hornstrumental)" for the show stealing DJs out there. Keeping it on a slightly humorous tip still is the riff heavy "Booty Funk" that loops its guitars hard next to some bassline house in "Loud Mouth (feat Goodmoney G100)". Review: Here's a meeting of great electro producers, as DJ Godfather hosts a collaboration with K-1 aka Keith Tucker on his Databass label. "Version 1" of the title track is a seamless collaboration be-tween these two creative minds, with Godfather's hip-hop scratching and bass-heavy rhythm combined with Tucker's robotic vocals and atmospheric but chilling synths. While the dub take follows a similar trajectory, albeit without the vocals, 'Version 2' sees the pair take a trip to electro's outer limits with the original vocals sent into a robotic vortex, supported by a robust, steely rhythm. It's an inspired release from the sound's most distinctive artists.

Review: It's hard to believe that after all these years one of the founding forces in Detroit ghetto tech is only now, in 2020, releasing his debut album. Well...at 44 tracks large, maybe it's been worth the wait...coming from a man who back in the day helped set up Twilight 76 that released classics from the likes of DJs Assault, Deon and Slugo to Dave Clarke and Todd Osborne. More recently Godfather relaunched his Databass label which he now champions with an epic, straight-shootin' and unpretentious full time opus that takes in every angle of Detroit ghetto tech, be it the more contemporary, breakbeat and footwork sounds of "Smoke In The Air" to the gnarilier electro vibes of "The D". Featuring crewdem like Goodmoney G100, King Saadi, Lil Mz 313 and Parhouse to Dan Diamond in "These Strippers", Electro Beats For Freaks is bold music for bold times, but fresh as fuck.

An absolute legend, a Godfather, of Detroit's ghetto house, electro and 808 sound, it's been the last two years that we've seen a dynamic resurgence from the artist, firing in a hot streak of digital only action to the shelves over the past two years. Following Sheefy Mcfly's Jittin Aint Dead EP for Databass, DJ Godfather keeps the Detroit-born movement kicking with two tracks of frenetic rhythms and mad drums that skirt between hi-nrg ghetto house ("Jit Like Me") to the cut up vocals and footwork in "Jit Or Die". Bonus points for the rude boy Parkhouse acapella.

Review: DJ Godfather is unlikely to ever win an award for the most politically correct track titles, but as this release demonstrates, he remains one of the most entertaining ghetto producers. Like all of his career highlights, "Get Girl" is remarkably uncomplicated but highly effective. Underpinned by rolling snares and a primal, jacking rhythm, it features an unknown female vocalist intoning the track's title. It's a similar situation on "Bitch Get Off Me", where Parkhouse utters the title's command over a rudimentary groove and repetitive house organ riff. However, neither can compare to the title track, where Godfather teams up with vocalist Good Money for a trip into high-octane, lo-fi ghetto funk.

Review: When we saw another release had dropped from the Databass US catalogue we couldn't wait to get stuck in, especially with DJ Godfather at the production helm. We begin our venture with 'Elektro Rok', a somewhat nostalgic instrumental track, bringing together synthetic electric guitars and 8bitty riffs. It all goes very Detroit at the next turn with the skippy drum work and unusual percussive rolls of 'They Wanna See My Footwork', before we finish up the EP on 'The D'. This one is an old school electro roller, driven by its siren like lead synthesis and extremely clean drum designs, signing the EP out in style.
