Review: Everybody loves a good VA, it's just wicked getting a whole big album full of tracks from different artists - the definition of a kid in a candy shop. This one from Uncommon has a cool combination of bigger and smaller acts, from the mighty Kasra to lesser known quantities like Resist. Kasra's 'Needles' is a standout, a fiercely minimal slapper that gargles and gurgles its way straight into your brain, and for anyone that is into the Critical sound: this is the tune for you. Kanine, another rising star, hits hard on 'Searching', a tune that reminds us of the recent Klippee tracks over on Lifestyle Music. All in all, this is a very solid little VA - yes yes!

Review: Since resurrecting System Shock, Callide has been on a one-man mission to raise the profile of his own favoured brand of soul-shaking deadliness. Review: Sub-liminal brings an end to the year that was, going out all guns blazing with on Air Part 2 featuring a bunch of wicked VIPs. Label staple Agro serves up several collaborations on here with the likes of Mentah, Raz, Diligent Fingers and Ghxsty. There's also a few offerings by the ever reliable Yatuza; our pick being the wonky stepper of "Distance" with Master Error. Elsewhere, Pyro pops up a few times throughout and was in fine form on "Smithdown Bass" and Prestige handed in a couple of quality dubs with neurofunk cut "Logical" being our pick of the bunch.

Review: Everyone likes a good compilation, right? What's better than having as big a range of artists as possible in one condensed place? It's essentially an album with the ease of listening of a single, so we're all for it. Subliminal have come out with the 2020 edition in their Riddim Return series and it's packed full of bangers, across a range of styles, and it's one of those albums which doesn't try to be cool or sophisticated by chucking in a few fillers for the sake of diversity - it's just hard stuff here. It works great, with Sam Harris' tendency for muscular minimosity coming on loud and clear on Boom Ting, a wickedly devilish and driving roller.

Review: Remix time... Sub-Liminal look back over the last few years of releases, pick some of their many great rolling moments and get the artists to remix swap. It's gully grooves from the off as Hybrid adds a much darker dynamic to "Super Bad" and breaks up the reggae sample while Too Greezey injects serious drum muscle and switches out Hybrid's signature junglized basslines on "Kung Fu Master". Leaf follows with a darkened, clipped and steppy twist of Agro & Too Greezey's dubwise "Don't Mek Me Get Dark" and finally Agro smooths out the angular attitude of Leaf's "New Life" with a lower swung, funkier perspective. Great concept, killer versions.

Review: DJ Hybrid just won't let up. Consistently smashing 2016 to pieces with crusher after crusher, his sense of classic rudiments and contemporary dynamics is nothing short of precision. As proved once again on Sub-Liminal: "Murder Soundboy" rolls with the understated grit of a mid 90s 31 cut. "Kung Fu Masters" retains this foundation feel with a mid 90s grizzler vibe that Serum executes on the regular while "Know Your Enemy" is all reese bass and sirens with moody ominous results. Remix-wise Benny L plays the consummate edge lord with steroid drum twists. Murderation.

This third annual mix-up is certainly no exception as they plough through 59 tracks - many of which are brand new exclusives - to paint a picture of exactly where drum & bass is at right now. Review: DJ Hybrid on Serial Killaz... Before you even press play you know this is going to be trouble. And you'd be right; every track on here is firing lock stock and barrel into the heart of the dance. The title track shows a different side to the Audio Addict / Deep In The Jungle bossman as he gets much moodier, steppier and spacier in the mix than he's done before. It's back by a whole slew of damagers including the outer-planetary wobbles of "Tell You Something" (with Replicant), the gnarly, dog-barking bassline stepper "Push" and a body-slamming ghetto-style rump-shaker "Upside Down" (with My Selecta). And that's barely half of what's on offer here. DJ Hybrid is absolutely slamming it once again this year. And we know he's got plenty more locked in the chamber this year. Skillz!

Review: In terms of legendary status for labels over on the jungle/jump-up side of the scene, it's pretty hard to beat Serial Killaz. Run by the duo of the same name, the imprint has arrived with the second instalment of their mixtape series and it's unsurprisingly good. Full of big tunes from guys like Serial Killaz themselves, Vital Elements and Upgrade, it's the latter of these guys that takes the cake with 'Steel Drum'. You've probably heard this one doing the rounds and it's actually already been released, but oh boy what a tune this is: a screaming, siren-lake mash of grating metallic synths and punching drums all come together to make an unstoppably good piece of music. Don't sleep on the rest of these tunes though, and a special mention goes to DJ Hybrid's 'Beatbox' - naught jungle vibes.

Review: DJ Hybrid sparks up once again. This time flexing on Serial Killaz imprint, it's another generous package that stretches across the board and back. "Puff Puff Pass" pays homage with the sticky icky with a drawn out fog horn bassline, "Ready To Rumble" adds a little vocal sensuality to the glacial bass while "I Challenge You" is more of a tech edged affair with another scorching electric bassline. Dig deeper for the frenzied rifle breaks and creative humanised textures of "Beatbox" (with My Selecta) and the savage breaks and Dread bass warbles of "Hear The Drummer". If that's not enough there's an uncut stinker VIP of "Moving On" thrown in for good measure. No one is doing it like DJ Hybrid.

Review: For those who don't know: the Serial Killaz are Drum & Bass/Jungle producers from the UK signed to Congo Natty and Playaz Recordings and in addition are now running their own Serial Killaz label, which serves up this killer by DJ Hybrid entitled the In Too Deep EP. First up he teams up with Section on the fierce breakbeat onslaught of "Give You More" which is reminiscent of classic Dom & Roland. "Regrets" is a dark roller with sampled R&B vocals providing a nice contrast to the nefarious elements; killer bassline on this one by the way! The title track is deep old school style drum and bass that's no doubt a nod to classic sounds by DJ Die or Krust while the jump up vibes of "Moving On" close the EP out nicely.

Review: Once again, we see the awesome sounds of Natty Dub Recordings return, this time delivering a pulverising display of original D&B flavour, welcoming the lethal sounds of Serial Killaz inside for a truly tasty remix. The original sounds of DJ Hybrid are on display, as we hear his heavyweight roller 'Back In The Day' receive that classic Serial Killaz overhaul, reworking the track into an even more gritty roller, with a strong focus on gnarly synthesiser growls, eerie backing melodies and of course a combination of hard hitting drum thuds. Review: Calling all ragamuffins and roustabouts; DJ Hybrid's 2016 Natty Dub banger gets the treatment from two bonafide roller dons. T>I steps up first with a serious murk of approval as the creepy intro, spoken sample and stripped back nature of the original are maintained but with added clunky drums on the fills and a gnarlier twist to the bass fills. Damageman also maintains the arpeggiated intro but then drops into a classic loose-limbed breakbeat before eventually building into a big juicy synth riff a la BBK circa 2005. Spot on.

Review: Hailing from Coventry, DJ Hybrid has firmly established himself over the last couple of years as someone at the forefront of D&B's re-discovered love for jungle-influences and bouncy but hard-hitting basslines. Drawing upon those influences, he's back on Natty Dub Recordings for a full-throated six-tracker that kicks off with title track 'Push The Dub', a gently weighted sine-based wobbler that pushes on every corner of the range. 'Back in the Day' and '808 Roller' have clear Kings of the Rollers vibes, with juddering bass pulses and that recognizable sense of hardware-based rawness. This release has overtones of Manchester and undertones of the South - proper UK underground stuff.

Review: Half man, half machine (hence the name), Hybrid has been unstoppable this year. Tune after tune after tune for days and they've all been precision delivered with the dancefloor and heads in mind. Here we find him on mean debut label EP flex for Natty Congo and nothing is left to chance as all vibes are licked thoroughly; "Occupational Hazard" kicks with real classical Moving Fusion style late 90s power and some brilliantly tripped out cascading moans, "Lunar" kicks with a Rockwellian ghettotech pace while "Bad Man Culture" rolls with a mild jumpy wobble reminiscent of foundation Bristol. "Turn It Around" brings home the funk bacon with a vibe that's not dissimilar to Break. Seriously.

It's 20 tracks fat and, as you'd expect from such a prolific and hard working artist, it's well worth the wait. Featuring collabs with the likes of Rider Shafique, Diligent Fingers, Madrush MC, Redders and MC Foxy, there's a lot of next level action to unpack but instant head-slicers include the space age purrs and twists of 'Find Your Way', the menacing darkness and sparse funk of 'Pull Out Ya Piece' and the bouncing and swagger of 'Live For Yourself.' These are just some the many stand-out bangers from an album by one of the scene's most consistent leading lights in the last 10 years. Made for junglists, by a junglist.
