Review: When we saw that the legendary DJ Madd was back in action with a long-awaited 140 drop we couldn't have been more excited, with this new four-tracker on Badman Studios being exactly what the doctor ordered. We kick off with the dungeon-ready reese-sweeps and colourful percussive ditherings of 'Babylon Scatta', before we hear more classic Madd bass design on 'Lighta Kru', combining eerie atmospherics with energetic rhythms throughout. Next, 'Soldiers' delivers a subby punch of OG dubstep-flavour, keeping those drum designs super minimal before the jittery grooves and spacious processing of 'Weapon Of Choice' puts the icing on the cake. Incredible work as per!

Prosper/Don't Trip
Prosper - (4:59) 170 BPM Hot
Don't Trip - (4:59) 170 BPM
Review: DJ Madd, fresh off the back of a supremely good EP on Unchained, is landing on France's Vandal imprint with another single that delves into the depths of drum & bass' rhythmic basis and comes out the other side looking utterly brilliant. The A-side is a penetratingly minimal roller set within spacious celestial tapestries, a backdrop which leads in to urban sampling and gushing, rippling sub basses and interwoven reeces. The flip is a kick-heavy halftime stomper packed with the weight of an elephant and the angled groove of a Skeptical track, a truly nasty piece of work that builds and builds with a ferocious progression. Top stuff.

Review: It's time for somewhat of an explosive apperance on this one as we see the highly anticipated return of Roadman Joel who again gets busy alongside his compadres at Tumble Audio for one of the biggest and baddest bass music selections on road. As ever with a Tumble compilation, the genre range is exceptional, from Sergic's breaksy brilliance on 'The Prince' to the super cold speed garage episode in 'Jawnz' and the grimey, tech infused drum slices of 'No Bootlegs' from Timbah. This a fantastic project from start to finish, with our two main highlights being Leda Stray's super funky pulser in 'Ashtray', Rame's lively vocal appearance of Ali McK & IYZ's 'An Again', and the acidic expressions of Arctic's 'A Little Bit More Reese'.

Watch Forward (Greazus remix) - (3:59) 83 BPM
Review: After solidifying his name in the dubstep scene, DJ Madd has been on a roll with the drums in recent times, a trend he certainly continues here as he again teams up with Roots & Future for two tracks of pure fire. We kick off with a storming original as the subtle, yet substantial composition of 'Watch Forward' comes into view, which steams forward with some extreme sub pressure and crispy drum processing. We are also given a junglisit's dream as Greazus steps forward on remix duty, bringing a bag of seriously crispy unpredictable drum work to the project.

Review: Brooklyn/Bristol based Roots & Future are back with label head honcho Peter Simon aka DJ Madd (Cosmic Bridge/ZamZam Sounds) who throws down some street level 2-step shenanigans for the real warriors on "Take It Down Low". Next, the Hungarian producer gets the lighters out in full effect, on the bombastic deep dubstep monster "No Justice" featuring some serious low end frequencies and some ragga aesthetics for good measure. This guy is receiving praise by tastemakers such as Mary Anne Hobbs and the mighty David Rodigan - so if that 'ain't proof enough!

Badboy Selection - (4:38) 85 BPM Hot
Review: After what is approaching a decade at the cutting edge of bass music, DJ Madd has solidified himself as one of the greats. This latest release sees him team up with the Roots & Future imprint for an explosive halftime two tracker. First up we have Gone Like A Fool which is a schooling in bass control and use of space, incorporating haunting vocals and the occasional moogy arpeggio. On the B-Side we hear Badboy Selection which runs with similar themes alongside additional percussive instrumentation and dubbed out chord FX. This is a weighty one for sure!

Review: Nottingham's Tumble Audio are back with a serious bang, alongside none other than Hungarian dubstep legend DJ Madd. His brand new track 'Badman Talkin' is a dancehall inspired masterpiece, encompassing grinding subs, breakbeat snippits and choppy patois vocals. This release and it's remixes has been receiving top notch DJ support from top carnival selectors such as Toddla T, particularly the Archive half time rethink. Murder He Wrote and Tony Quattro get involved with fabulously funky recreations of the original track, both with their own unique grooves and instrumentation. It's been a top year for the Tumble Audio gang and this is a fantastic way to sign the year off in style.

Review: Bristol's Peter Simon aka DJ Madd touches down on Roots & Future with six, fully-loaded dance bullets packed with his inimitable beat snap and future-minded approach. To give you a taste, "Biggest Boss Jah" opens with a fiery cascade of liquid drums and dread bass, "Natural Journey" goes on some next level dub science, and "Square Crabz" launches a bleep riddim that's made for the 2AM slot, just when things start going one take over the line. This is next level bass engineering for all lovers of lower than low frequencies. Bad!

Sub-label "Vandal Limited" was founded in 2014 by SKS with Redeyes and is dedicated to liquid and deep music. Their compilation Grand Royal is back with it's fourth edition of footwork, jungle and halftime flavours on Vandal LTD with a massive volume featuring Balatron from Iceland who serves up the deep and deconstructed drum and bass creeper "Missplaced" (original mix) , Hast from the UK with some wonky deep dubstep on "Beat Canon" (original mix) , DJ Madd from New York with some blunted bass inflected hip hop on "Cheeky Steppa" (original mix) plus Crimes! from Portland USA with the absolutely wicked "Beetleborg" (original mix) with bassline so razor sharp it will potentially tear up your speakers so beware!

Sound Executor - (4:06) 83 BPM Hot
NYC Badman - (4:51) 105 BPM
Soundboy Elimination - (6:21) 83 BPM
Review: DJ Madd is one of the few artists who is still consistently innovating the dubstep genre, and keeping things forward-minded. That's because he's never tied himself down to the genre too tightly and, instead, has managed to be branded under the more wide-eyed 'future dub' tag. This isn't his doing, it's simply the fact that his sound is deep, chimerical and always in a state of flux. He returns to Roots & Future with "Shinobi", a dark and brooding slice of bass science that is powered by a series of sounds and and samples for Japanese samurai B-movies. and whose militaristic swarm of beats is followed by the more broken percussive patterns of "Sound Executor". "NYC Badman" takes a turn for the unexpected, down a path made of raw drum machine patterns, echoing waves of sound and a general look-and-feel that recalls the dubbier end of the bass spectrum, whereas "Soundboy Elimination" gives us more intricate beat folds, more badass bass, and that singular DJ Madd dread.

Cachit (Itoa remix) - (3:31) 55 BPM
Burnin Dance (Bashment mix) - (3:33) 55 BPM
Review: A crucial skank-bullet last summer, Madd's Redders-stamped digidub bum-slapper "Peng Teng" gets the treatment from halftime's man of the moment Moresounds as he dilutes the juice with more space and trippy pace. Itoa ups the tempo with a raw tribal finish on "Catchit" while Madd lays the flex down himself on his 2013 cut "Burning Dance". Switching out the big clunking halfsteps for a skippier summer rhythm, it's another seasonal smash for one of bass music's most consistent creators.

Cachit - (4:02) 55 BPM
Gunshot Riddim (VIP mix) - (3:58) 83 BPM
Champion - (3:53) 55 BPM
Review: Continually keeping the pressure up with ever more diverse explorations of the 140 bpm landscape, DJ Madd has been on a productive run of late. Alongside quality 7" releases for ZamZam Sounds this release comes to light in a sly nod to the evergreen "Sleng Teng" riddim. "Peng Teng" features Redders dropping a fiery vocal rant, while Madd rocks a set of tidy jungle breaks, trap drum machine rushes and plenty more necessary ingredients for a surefire club smasher. "Cachit" keeps the intricacy levels up with some very tightly wound drums, while "Gunshot" rides on a rootsy skank alongside the more modern elements. "Champion" meanwhile brings a little dancehall swagger into the mix, rounding off the EP in fine style.

Review: One of the most consistent men in future dub, Madd opens his remit even further to explore a wider range of tempos and roots influences. The result isn't just a collection of powerful heaters, but also a kindly reminder than we don't need to operate within such strict tempo constraints. Great examples include the classic jungle jitters of "Every Little Thing", the sleazy, spacey slo-mo steppiness of "Blaze Fiyah" and the Critical-level D&B speaker-scrapper "Pushap". You'd be madd not to pick this one up.

Review: Following some legendary appearances on Lion Charge, Madd returns to the darker side with three killer peaktimers on his own Roots & Future imprint."I-N-I" is a Truth-style pummeller with overwhelming subs, rolling drums and big bass gurgles on the eights. "Burnin Dance" fires up with a great vocal sample and echoes of melodica before dropping into some serious low-end darkness. "Gunshot" follows a similar suit; plunging sub drops and pristine drums lay down a syncopated jam that can't help but make you move. Dubbed out danger, this is Madd at his most dancefloor-focused.

Review: Sixth in the series, This Is Dubstep is one of the more comprehensive, on-point series the scene has given us (ie: many!) Across the 40 tracks every single shade is covered; from rave-tinged (Noisia's remix of "Smack My Bitch Up") to all-out technicolour bass (Drumsound & Bassline Smith), This Is Dubstep 2013 pays respect to all corners of the dance - including the really far-out experimentations of Mala and his Cuban project. With exclusives such as V.I.V.E.K's "Barcelona" and Killawatt's "Single Entity" thrown in for good measure, this isn't just a summary of today's dubstep; it's a slice of the future too.

Battle - (4:40) 140 BPM Hot
Secrets - (4:41) 140 BPM
Review: Recently relocated to Bristol from Hungary, Peter Simon, aka DJ Madd, makes his debut on N-Type's Wheel & Deal imprint. First up, "Battle" pairs a crackly yet menacing vocal sample threatening "I can offer you a battle" with thwacking drum kicks and moody SFX. It stays, lurking around the sample, glowering bassline in tow for the duration - straight up late night/early morning dancefloor business, no question. "Secrets" is a bit more disconcerting; with a sparse intro, it boasts a syncopated rhythm, and a more fidgeting template of snares which is both deeply unnerving and infectious. Promising stuff here from Madd.

Review: Three years on and Subway Recordings has firmly established themselves as one of the foremost Dutch dubstep labels, yet they do not by any means limit themselves to genre or sound. This Destination compilation takes us through the grimey, the dark, the deep, the dancefloor and the experimental in turn. Noah D's "Hardcore" kicks off with a thrilling combination of jagged neon synths and harsh sub bass cheekiness, before Akkachar & Taz Buckfaster drop sci fi sounds on "187 On A Rock" and DJ Madd delivers the twitching Ramandanman sensibilities of "Bass Comedown". Mayhem & Whisperlink provide an early highlight with "Trap Or Die" filled with bleepy SFX and dark, rumbling basslines underpinning the ominous, vocodered vocal sample. Rivalling this is "Rumble" by Reso & Vent - a sure fire dancefloor driven killer. Here the rowdy, bass-heavy wobbles and smacking drum kicks really up the ante and we are transported deep into the peaktime heavy hitters. All in all, it's a comprehensive array of tracks here from some highly talented, genre-pushing artists which should, really, not be missed.
