Review: Tapping up the fertile Lisbon scene and its proud individualistic electronic music, Warp Records presents the first volume of CARGAA in a move that will no doubt break the sounds of these artists through to a wider audience, much as happened with the Chicago footwork producers on Planet Mu's Bangs & Works compilations. DJ Marfox and DJ Newdyt Fox kick the EP off with a searing blend of peak time hype full of pealing leads, off beat percussion and subby booms. DJ Nigga Fox meanwhile takes things a little slower, plays down the synth lines and lets the percussion come further forwards in a head-spinning melee of polyrhythms. There's also string laden emotion from Blacksea Naoo MAya, and a sprightly slice of wonky house from DJ Ly-COox proving that in Portugal's capital a whole lot of influences feed into a very unique melting pot.

Review: As the spearhead of the underground Lisbon electronic music scene, DJ Marfox has made a break for the wider world of labels and releases with this appearance on Lit City Trax, bringing his African-tinged hype sound to an audience beyond his home town. "Terra Batida" matches strikingly simple synth lines with a snagging groove that stands out due to its off kilter nature. "Noise" switches things up with an experimental line in found sounds and polyrhythmic contortions that dart the Marfox sound out into leftfield. At every turn on this EP the groove can split in any number of different ways, but it's not all peak time body shaking business, as "Heartbeat" demonstrates with its tender melodies and easy pace. Whether fast or slow though, this is all single-minded music arranged in unfamiliar ways.

Review: Something refreshingly different for you here as Pollinate records welcome a new signing in the form of Portuguese producer/dj Marfox. Following his debut EP on Principe, here he delivers five tracks in his unique Kuduro and Batida styles. Two genres which although well outside-the-box, do have many elements to make them work in progressive and techno sets. All five are percussion led with lots of interesting programming and use of a wide variety of drums and fills. There is a strong tribal edge and a relentless roll to them all. If your into the likes of Buraka Som Sistema, and Zombies For Money, then we would highly recommend checking these out.
