Review: The mysterious DJ Python is said to be arguably NYC's first deep-reggaeton artist. He appears next on Anthony Naples' Proibito. On the A side, the trippy and looped up minimalism of "Tranquila" is a perfect groove for trancing out in the sunlight, while by contrast "Cuidado" is more suited to the night in a Brooklyn basement; this deep and dirty tribal groove is perfect for dancefloor trance induction. Finally "Sunset Groove" kinda does exactly what it says on the tin really; and those uplifting and hypnotic synth strings just rise and rise, getting some real euphoric feelings happening. Python himself is said to claim this will be a huge open-air record: he's not wrong!
Review: Its festival operation may have enjoyed its most successful year so far, but Dekmantel remains true to its underground roots on this look back at 2019. There's the off beat disco of Freedom Engine, Mathew Jonson's new project, as well as left of centre curveballs from Lamellen and Epsilove. That said, the Dutch collective also understand what's needed to rock a dance floor. Fittingly, 2019 includes the electronic disco of Jex Opolis "Earth Boy" and Betonkust & Palmbomen II's acrid acid workout "Underground Dance Floor", which both appeared on the label earlier this year- as well as the timeless icy techno classic of Terrace's "Bewitched".
Review: With most altruistic projects focused on supporting Covid-related causes, it's heartening to see that the Craigie Knowes label continues to support the War Child charity. This fourth instalment is an exemplary volume, and features expansive, wide-eyed ambient pieces from Night Tide's Eluize and The Burrell Connection sitting alongside the twitchy, acid-infused breaks of Rudolf C's "Crystalliser". Scene veteran Warlock also contributes, with the busy, noisy electro of "Shock Headed" - which is similar in style to "Real Seeker", Stellar Om Source's contribution - while on "Transitions", Innershades steers the compilation back towards a more melodic direction. While these tracks all stand out in their own right, the fact that they are supporting a good cause makes them even more precious.
