Review: B2 Recordings hits release number 13 with DJ Rocca and Lex combing on a trio of fresh house cuts that blend elements of disco, Latin and soul. Up first is the glorious 'Solid Street' which has loose and percussive disco-house grooves overlaid with big synth energy and steamy vocals. 'Solar System' is slower and deeper, with a more rugged bassline and low slung sense of funk that never lets up. Last of all, 'Rose Tree' is a ramshackle house arrangement with whistles, Rhodes keys, tin-pot percussion, florid flutes and plenty of sunny energy all making it a real standout. A timeless EP packed with musicality.

Review: Born back in 2008, Rayko's Rare Wiri mark their 200th release with an album-length compilation featuring 12 brand new cuts from what the man himself describes simply as "some of my favourite artists out there". Review: Two mixes to choose from of this latest offering from Luca Roccatagliati, AKA DJ Rocca, an Italian scene veteran whose career got underway back in the 90s. In its Original form, 'Manny's Pancakes' marries a sci-fi/Theremin-link synth squeal to some subtle jazz piano licks and intricate percussion with a vague Afro-Cuban feel, while the Vocal Remix from Lex (Athens) adds a spoken male vocal courtesy of one Mike Montano. The latter mix has a dreamier feel and is probably the one for peaktime play, while the more energetic Original should help you get 'em warmed up nicely.

Review: 11 years have now passed since Italian disco scene stalwarts Daniele Baldelli (AKA the originator of the 'cosmic disco' sound) and DJ Rocca first joined forces in the studio. They've released plenty of must-check material since - including two solid albums - but this EP for Gottwax is actually their first joint effort for three years. They begin by peppering a rubbery, squelchy, post-electro groove with jaunty guitars, mind-mangling electronics and sparkling synthesizer lead lines on 'Blanka', before dipping the tempo to 110 BPM on the Yellow Magic Orchestra-does-cosmic disco flex of 'Flava'. 'Verdeta' is another loose-limbed, analogue-rich synth dancer full of bubbly riffs and interestingly programmed drums, while 'Helblua' is a modular and analogue-heavy slab of lo-fi electronic disco cheekiness.

Review: Roam Recordings was set up by Jason 'JP Soul' Peters and Jeni 'Jeniluv' Erickson in 2001, and has since put out records by the likes of Demarkus Lewis, Rhythm Plate, Hesohi and Dino Lenny. For their 100th release/20th anniversary, though, they've avoided the obvious 'best of' route and instead serve up 21 brand new tracks coming from a mix of familiar names (Emperor Machine, DJ Rocca, Tronik Youth) and newcomers. The overall vibe leans towards cosmic and Italo disco, but that's a very broad-brush picture - there are tracks here that could, variously, be filed equally well under house, techno, electro, Balearica or prog. Psychedelic electronic disco at its best.

Review: Nang's annual round-up of key cuts they've released over the previous 12 months, The Array, has long been a must-check for those who like their nu-disco colourful, synthesizer-heavy and soaked in Mediterranean sunshine. Here the long-serving label offers up volume 11, a predictably entertaining affair that skips between the revivalist '80s synth-pop shimmer of Kim & Buran's remix of Wang Chung's 'Dance Hall Days'; the jaunty nu-disco colour of Tonbe's squelchy 'Good Taste'; the more cosmic, Italo-influenced shuffle of Outtake's 'Black Discotheque'; the throbbing, acid-flecked trip that is Aimes' revision of the Beat Broker's pedal steel-flecked 'Hold Your Horses'; the shimmering cheeriness of Disco Doubles' 'Don't Hurt Me'; and the low-down disco-funk hustle of Future Feelings' 'Downtown Girl', as remixed by Situation.

Review: After 12 years in the game, Spanish nu-disco stable have reached the 100-release milestone, and they're celebrating with an imaginatively titled compilation packing eight brand new tracks that have been handpicked by label boss Rayko. Obviously, with eight tracks from as many artists there's a fair degree of stylistic variety on offer, but the emphasis generally is on heavily electronic grooves - sometimes veering into Balearic/coffee table pastures, sometimes served with a darker, more leftfield twist. It's really more of a home listening album than a collection of club cuts, but for dancefloor purposes start with the contributions from Ilya Santana and Sauco...

Review: German label Jackoff reboot a series whose last volume dropped way back in 2014. It's an impressively varied set: Matthias Vogt serves up some electro-inspired prog on 'Love Plus One' (nothing to do with Haircut 100), Joal and Jepe flirt with both Detroit techno and Italo-disco, Jakobin pays homage to the hardcore/proto-jungle era with the aptly-titled 'Cold Breaks', DJ Rocca mashes up dub and rave on 'Como Esta', and Freestyle Man takes us into leftfield electro territory on closer 'Phobos Protectorate'. It would be a VERY open-minded DJ or dancefloor that'd love all six in equal measure, but conversely, the stylistic range on offer makes this worth checking for jocks of many persuasions.

Review: FAR are excited to bring Chris Coco and DJ Rocca to the label for this release. Meeting at La Casella festival in Italy in the summer of 2019, the duo decided to team up in the studio resulting in the ''Discoteca'' EP, a shimmering slice of Balearic, Disco House containing all the right ingredients and forward motion required for maximum sunshine or nightime connection. Discoteca (The Heavy Fun Dub Mix), they manage to create a heady cocktail of synth riffs, ARhodes and Guitars all underpinned by a solid bass line, nodding to the Jazz funk of Atmosphere with the edge of Dinosaur L recording in Italy circa 1982. AAntonio prosper turns up on vocals, whispering, and chanting, evoking imagery of a night out in the mid-summer heat somewhere in southern Europe.

Review: Of late, Dean Meredith's Rogue Cat Sounds label has been exploring the more cosmic and Balearic end of the musical spectrum, so it's little surprise to see him welcome Italian legends DJ Rocca and Daniele Badlelli to the imprint. The storied twosome begins in fine fashion via the lilting electric guitar solos and bubby electronic disco grooves of "Sky Dump", before opting for a weirder and more psychedelic dancefloor sound on Afro-Cosmic workout "Massive Birth" and doffing a cap to Yello on the eccentric electronics of "Talorypo". The accompanying remix package is epic and uniformly high standard, though if we were picking favourites we'd opt for Warehouse Preservation Society's warm, thickset nu-disco version of "Talorypo" and Mind Fair's Chicken Lips-esque rework of "Massive Birth".

Review: Spain's Rare Wiri label bring us their second retrospective label comp, which follows on the heels of last year's Vol 1, and just a quick glance at the artists involved - who include Ilya Santana, Rayko, The Beat Broker, Yam Who? and Ziggy Phunk - will give the initiated a pretty good idea of the quality on offer! Gazeebo's 'Soul Dance' is rooted in the deep funk of the early 70s, Phunk's 'Let It Move You' is a brass-spangled disco-house groover, Rayko's 'B-Nano' has an 80s Italo vibe, 'Whishbone' by Parissior channels late 70s Euro-disco, and so it goes on for six more very playable nu-disco bullets.

Review: Italy's Daniele Baldelli has simply kept on innovating since he began experimenting with disco and cosmic house, back in the early 1980s. The DJ-rpducer veteran is back on Real Balearic this week, coming through with some sublime downtempo-ism in "Quagga", a slow, break-centric swarm of delicate melodies that find their own sort of off-kilter movement - not to mention revel in an endless sea of majestic, jazz-friendly sounds. There's two remixes off the back of it, both form Aimes, with the first upping the tempo and crafting more of a house sound from Baldelli's rich sonics, and the second blending in some subtle 303 nuances to make it an altogether more rave-friendly experience.

Review: While more often associated with punk-funk and dirty Italo style dancefloor workouts, Gomma's vast back catalogue contains a string of disco and boogie-inspired gems. To highlight the fact, the label has decided to release a series of EPs featuring some of its finest "Disco Jams". This first installment begins with a fine WhoMadeWho interpretation of Munk and LCD Soundsystem founder James Murphy's Sly Stone style growler, "Kick Out The Chairs", before charging into dub disco-meets-proto-house territory via In Flagranti's "In The Silver White Box". There's another chance to admire Dimitri From Paris and DJ Rocca's Prelude Records tribute, "Eros Disco Theme", while original NYC disco don Nicky Siano channels the spirit of Loose Joints on his fantastic rework of KDMS's "Never Stop Believing".

Review: Daniele Baldelli is in a rich vein of form right now, with each successive release seemingly being stronger than its predecessor. The cosmic disco pioneer's latest project is an album that impressively blurs the boundaries between his original "Afro-cosmic" sound and the horizontal world of Balearica. Predictably, it's a formula that delivers a string of musical highlights, from the woozy easy listening flourishes and head nodding throb of "Quagga" and ambient-soaked late night fluidity of "Dodo", to the restless Afro percussion and jazzy guitars and of "Megaloceros (featuring Verdo)". Those looking for more Padilla-style horizontal thrills should check the "Extra Balearic" mix of "Pongo", while Baldelli's love of vintage analogue synths and lolloping rhythms is successfully explored on album highlight "Lipote".

Review: As resident DJ at infamous Italian disco Cosmic Club, Baldelli pioneered the slow chugging grooves that evolved into both Balearic and Belgian New Beat. Here he teams up with DJ Rocco for the impressive "Poouli". The track is a super cool slice of moody early 80s new wave dance music - all moody tropical vibes, not unlike Jamaica Running by The Pool. Private Agenda's "Sunrise" mix adds ecstasy to the mix for a shimmering masterpiece and Sare Havelicek turns in a stunning, warped-chillwave style jam. Gig Masin meanwhile opts for a beatless, chiming coda. Not a dud in sight on here!

Review: In Flagranti have carved their own niche in dance music since back in the Electroclash days. This is due to their sexually charged analogue disco-funk style and sound. Here they rustle up "The Camelwalk" for Codek, a tune that sounds like a frisky Red Axes doing the soundtrack for a 70s porno with help from Bobby Konders (lots of flute!). Rayko's "Spiritual Wiri mix" features tough 4/4 drums, bass twangs, ascending arpeggios and yes, those flutes again. Inigo Vontier's mix revisits deepest, crackliest 80s Chicago and there also some cool retro beats featured in the bonus dub mix too.

Review: Here's something to cheer: the first EP from Dimitri From Paris and DJ Rocca's collaborative Erodiscotique project following the release of last year's superb debut album on BBQ Japan. As usual, their inspirations and musical reference points tend towards the vintage. Opener "One For Frankie", for example, smothers a vintage Chicago house groove with the kind of dreamy, positive and melodious musical flourishes that were a hall mark of Frankie Knuckles best productions, while "Zanzibar" pays tribute to the bustling, percussive, synth-heavy pressure of early '80s NYC and NJ "proto-house" productions. "Don't You Feel The Same", on the other hand, wraps sweet Balearic synth lines around a chunky, "French Touch" style disco-house groove.

Review: Roam Recordings out of San Francisco have been at it since the early noughties releasing great stuff by the likes of local heroes Justin Martin and Demarkus Lewis through to Rhythm Plate and even Tone Of Arc or Heretic in recent times. Next up is Luca Roccatagliati a legendary Italian DJ, musician and producer who had collborated with Daniele Baldelli and Dimitri From Paris over the years. On this nice EP he serves up "Maccheroni" a deep and semi-balaric acid house groove, but it's all about Eric "Dr. Dunks' Duncan's tough rework which really works that 303 acid into something that bit more hearty. "Aura" is yet more of the same but the remix by Black Spuma (comprised of Gerd Janson and Fabrizio Mammarella) is the real winner here on this sleek, neon-lit house anthem for retroverts.

Review: Futureboogie's annual Summer Riot EP rarely disappoints. This year's instalment of the multi-artist extravaganza - the fifth in totak - is every bit as essential as its' predecessors. Long time friend of the family Bonar Bradberry steps up first with "Analogue Express", where bubbly synthesizer lead lines rub shoulders with Chicken Lips style bass and rich, life-affirming piano chords. Experienced Italian DJ Rocca fuses brain-melting acid lines, dark electronics and African influences on the wonky "Voodoo", before former Fila Brazillia man Steve Cobby drops a lolloping chunk of audible sunshine in the shape of "Lefthanded Books". Arguably best of all, though, is Field Theory's "Rituals", a swirling fusion of dreamy deep house, mind-altering acid, and warehouse-friendly rhythms.

Review: Regular collaborators Daniele Baldelli and DJ Rocca join forces once more, this time for Is It Balearic Recordings. The title track leads the way, with the duo layering thickset analogue synth motifs and acid-tinged arpeggios atop a chunky groove, before "Santana" delivers more psychedelic, cosmic-tinged thrills - all alien melodies, rolling bottom end and wild guitars. Arguably best of all, though, is "Out To Lunch", a cheery, quirky concoction that sounds like the flipside dub of some long forgotten Italian synth-pop gem. Ray Mang provides the EP's obligatory remix, offering a tougher, dub-heavy take on "Reflextion" that rises and falls in all the right places.

Naturally this is a match made in glitterball heaven as DFP spans 40 years of grooves with a spotless collection of his own edits and upfront jams. Ranging from his own twists on standard disco gems such as "Le Freak" and "Lost In Music" to the likes of Disclosure's "F For You" and Todd Terje's "Delorean Dynamite" this is, without question, one of Defected's most extensive, expansive and exciting collections to date - which really is saying something. A natural fit for all house, disco and funk fans young and old.
