Review: Manda Moor and Sirus Hood's Mood Child imprint unleashes Gangsta Moods, a VA compilation so on the edge it verges on the illicit. Opening with Chicago House legend DJ Sneak's "Lower Level", the album sets a high bar with its iconic rolling groove. Sirus Hood and Gui Wittckind deliver a collaborative powerhouse with "HOT!", while De Angelis makes a striking label debut with "FKING INC." delving into deep grooves and industry truths. SAMIR and INDECK team up for the gritty "MTFKS", Buogo returns with the deeper "Angle", and Sunday Noise and Ben Finx blow up the dance floor with "Get It For Me". A Gangsta Moods is a tour de force and solid showing of the diverse talent within the Mood Child roster.

Crashin' Out - (6:42) 127 BPM
Review: While he never went away, it would be fair to say that DJ Sneak has enjoyed something of a career revival of late. This EP for Phonogramme follows strong recent outings for Heist Recordings, Hard Times and Toy Tonics. He begins in pleasingly bouncy and percussive mode on 'Let It Go', where warming stabs and hushed melodic motifs rise above a Kenny Dope style bumpin' house beat and deep, rich bass, before opting for a wonky, mind-mangling sound on title track 'Galactic Funk'. The Chicago veteran then gives it to us 'Soft & Ruff' - think rolling, locked-in grooves and slowly evolving melodic loops - while closing cut 'Crashin' Out' is a suitably sub-heavy slab of deep loop-house headiness.

UC Beatz - "Make Me Feel" (Orlando Voorn remix feat Marina Trench) - (6:10) 124 BPM
Review: Heist Recordings' 'The Round Up' - an annual mini-album in which label artists remix each other - reaches its tenth volume. As usual, there's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout. Dam Swindle channel the spirit of Victor Simonelli's early '90s NYC house productions on a fine version of Cinthie's 'Won't You Take Me', Krewcial opts for a bouncy, piano-rich 'classic house' revision of Orlando Voorn's 'High', and DJ Sneak re-imagines Dam Swindle's 'Soul's Lament' as a rolling, string-stab laden slice of rolling Chicago chunkiness. Further highlights include Crackazat's loose-limbed, sun-soaked and synth solo-heavy revision of Krewcial's 'Owo', Cinthie turns DJ Sneak's 'Full Cycle' into an acid-and-filter heavy peak-time loop jam, and Orlando Voorn and Marina Trench join forces on a deep, drowsy and woozy rework of UC Beatz's 'Make Me Feel'.

Review: It's easy to forget, nearly 30 years on, just how big an impact DJ Sneak's raw, jacking, cut-up style had on the house scene when he first emerged back in the mid-90s. But it did - and to his credit he's stuck to his guns ever since, building a multi-decade career based almost entirely on what is known to house connoisseurs as "that tracky shit". It's fair to say there are no great surprises here, then: you either dig Sneak's style or you don't, and I seriously doubt he gives a damn either way. In this writer's book, the man's a stone-cold don, and this six-tracker is going straight in the (virtual) box.

Review: The DJ Sneak revival continues, with the U.S house legend pitching up on Dam Swindle's Heist Recordings imprint following fine recent outings on Hard Times, Frappe and Digital Tape Recordings. It may be 30 years since the Chicago house stalwart released his first EP, but his talent for delivering impeccable club cuts has not dimmed - as is proved by the punchy drums, wide-eyed vocal snippets and sumptuous string loops of 'Love Can Make It Happen', and the breathlessly brilliant 'bompty beats' and sleazy acid bass of EP highlight 'Going Back To It'. His ability to work short loops into a frenzy of heads-down and hands-aloft dancing comes to the fore on 'Full Cycle', while 'Pockets' is a veritable breeze of brilliantly programmed, loose-limbed house beats, vocal stabs and wonderfully deep chords.

Review: Last year saw the release of three volumes of the '30 Years Of Strictly Rhythm' retrospective but the seminal New York label aren't done mining their back catalogue just yet! For 'Strictly Rhythms Vol 5' they hand over the keys to the vaults to Matt Edwards AKA Radio Slave, who's mashed 23 vintage Strictly cuts into two DJ mixes simply labelled 'Downtown' and 'Uptown'. The first mix (tracks 1-14) finds him in warm-up mode with much use of Dubs and Bonus Beats mixes, while for the second mix (tracks 15-23) he takes us down a more driving and tribalistic route - but rest assured, both sets are every bit as classy and diverse as the label itself.

Song For Derrick - (7:37) 126 BPM
Review: London-based label Sense Traxx are back, fresh off celebrating their eighth birthday with their next release here - which is massive to say the least. Boompty house heroes DJ Sneak (Toronto by way of Chicago) and Tripmastaz (Berlin by way of St. Petersburg) team up with new kids on the block Rare Two Inc. for two properly swingin' and trippy jams here. First up is the looped-up and hypnotic deep groove of "Makin' Muzak" followed by the infectiously bass-driven jack of "Song For Derrick" - which will go down a treat at the warm-up or the afterhours alike.

Manos Que Tocan (Deep dub) - (8:40) 126 BPM
Review: Windy City legend Carlos Sosa originally released Sneak Essentials Volume 2 back in 1995. Like all the early DJ Sneak material this was absolutely seminal, which alongside and like second wave contemporaries like Gemini and Green Velvet represented a change in the Chicago house style at the time. Typically loopy, minimal and percussive DJ tools can be heard here, such as on 'What Am I" with its disco vocal samples, while the following dub version is even wackier with its unrestrained mash-up of samples leading up to a euphoric crescendo. On "Manos Que Tocan", Sneak provides a serving of deep and sensual mood music for the late night, done right by a proper pioneer of the sound.

Review: Desolat has decided to reissue a number of EPs and compilations from their long-running X-Sampler series, which initially appeared on vinyl in limited numbers. This edition dates from 2010 and features some seriously essential cuts. For proof, get your ears around the jazz-flecked tech-house swing of Martin Buttrich's 'Roads', the percussion-laden late-night weight of Guti & Audikofly's locked-in 'Speechless Theory 11', the typically booming, big room-friendly hypnotism of Locodice's 'Don't Make Signal' and the evocative, atmospheric deep house haziness of Franck Roger's rather terrific 'Egotrippin'. DJ Sneak's 'No Challenge', a driving, muscular and bass-heavy beast with Latin overtones, is also exceptionally good.

Stars
Stars - (6:57) 130 BPM Hot
Stayin High - (6:55) 125 BPM
Review: The Chi-town legend that is DJ Sneak brings us two contrasting cuts. 'Stars' itself is a techy, jackin' affair centred around an indecipherable female vocal snip that loops for much of the track's duration, underpinned by no-nonsense chugging beats and some off-kilter organ parps. 'Stayin' High', on the other hand, is a deeper, more musical ride infused with a little Latin flava and topped with snatches of soulful male vocal. So our advice is to go for 'Stayin' High' if you're just warming the floor up, or 'Stars' if they're already bouncing away nicely and you wanna keep 'em there!

Review: Self-proclaimed House Gangster DJ Sneak has helped shape the course of dance music since the early 90s; his early music influencing the likes of Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Armand Van Helden. He brings his sound to Javi Bora's imprint Too Many Rules with the excellent Rising EP. His signature sounds - funky filtered disco-influenced house and tough, jacking beats are all present on this killer EP. From the hypnotic tribal funk of "Rising", hear the drummer get wicked on the funky breakbeat loops of "Keep On" and label boss himself Javi Bora even steps in for a killer remix: bangin' tough rolling tech house action for the main room.

Review: "Back & Forth" is the collaboration between Chi-town legend DJ Sneak and Miami booty-bass hero Jesse Perez. It is a dope hip-hop jam that features vocals from KE and reminiscent of the '90s with its broken drum beat and spoken word lyrics. Sneak himself says that he wanted to create 'a street smart dance floor track with powerful latino sounds and all the right ingredients for a club banger'. Young Brazilian talent DJ Lukke is first to remix it, co-produced alongside Blakkat aka Mark Bell goes for a bass-heavy reggaeton influenced bounce while the legendary Ricardo Villalobos goes deep into the afterhours with his hypnotic minimalist rendition that is as idiosyncratic as ever,

Review: Turning the winter cold into groove paradise, "We Love House" is back with another exemplary installment of top-shelf house music. Dropping delicious cuts at the pace of snow falling during a blizzard, this Winter edition sees the genre's most esteemed acts fuel the groove fire. Totaling to no less than 40 tracks, this edition of 'We Love House' certainly ain't frosty. Highlights come courtesy of: Berlin enfant terribles Format: B on the bouncy stomper "The Scoop", the old school rave flavour of Todd Terry presents CLS vs Montel - "Can You Feel It" (Montel remix), the deep tribal phunk of Kryder & Erick Morillo - "Waves" (feat Bella Hunter - Erick Morillo & Harry Romero extended remix) or power duo Leftwing & Kody's "With My Body" (feat Isis Salam) that rolls with utter force as always. We must also mention the worthy addition of the classic upon all classics: Inner City - "Big Fun 2017" (extended mix).

Review: Following up a great release by renowned actor Idris Elba, Doorly's Reptile Dysfunction (easily contender for the year's best label name!) now bring you more cheeky house shenanigans by the legendary Carlos Souza aka DJ Sneak. The Windy City Don now dwells in Toronto, but his roots will always be heard in his signature sound. He teams up with Russian wunderkind Tripmastaz (Plant 74/Dance Mafia - Chelyabinsk) for the second time in 2017, following up a great EP for Ovum. "Booty Ho" is a cheeky 'percolator' style jack, calling to mind the classic Chicago hard house sounds of the mid '90s - popularised by Relief Records and DJ Rush. There's something more familiar of Souza next up on the boompty disco loops of "Sneak Attacks" and equally so on the smoothly hypnotic edit of "Beat Phreakin" by Tripmastaz himself. These guys are such 'House Gangstas' - what more can we say!

Here are four class examples; "House That Jack Built" is a bone-shaking homage to every house record to ever come out of the US, "Definition Movement" is a Yazoo sampling behemoth, "Micronolito" is jacking groove that winks with Latino spirit while "You're Welcome" brings us to a percussive climax that's closer, at points, to techno than it is house. Explosive!

Review: Not much has changed in DJ Sneak's inimitable world since he emerged in the mid-90s. He still has a love of sampling catchy piano solos - audible on "Evil Women" - and as most of the tracks on Necessary Evils demonstrate, he does filtered disco house better than anyone else. However, this release for Loco Dice's label also signals that a number of changes are afoot. Apart from the decidedly un-PC track titles - "Beat Some Sense Into You", anyone? - Sneak's production sounds smoother and slicker. The drums and pulsing bass on "Women" are devoid of the rawness that characterised his 90s releases, while "Assault on You" heralds a new-found fascination with techno, as dark chords are combined with an evil rave horn.

After Touch
After Touch (Shlomi Aber version) - (7:16) 124 BPM
After Touch (DJ Sneak version) - (9:52) 123 BPM Hot
Review: It's endemic of electronic music's globalised nature that Israeli producer Shlomi Aber and Chicago veteran DJ Sneak are working together. What's even more notable is the fact that Aber's take on "After Touch" is more Berlin than Tel Aviv. In fact, if you were to close your eyes while playing this at a high volume, it would be easy to imagine it emanating from the Ostgut / Berghain stable, as firing, snappy percussion and dense drums underscore an insistent, surging bass. On the other hand, Sneak's version disproves the globalised theory; while it too has a driving feeling, he can't resist peppering the arrangement with disco filters. Some things are just mean to stay local.
