Review: Given the title, and artwork that pays homage to the 'House Sound of Chicago' comps, you'd be forgiven for expecting this to be an album full of slavish recreations of late 80s acid house - but you'd be wrong. That's not to say there aren't plenty of 808/909 beats and squelchin' 303s contained herein, because there are - in places. But 'Jack-Ish' has far more to offer than simple pastiche, because there are also nods to the rave era (check the vox on 'Monster Munch'), to the speed garage days (Theo Walbeck's opener even biting Jodeci's 'Freak 'N' You', the MK mix of which helped birth the style), to Chicago's Cajual/Relief-led 'second wave' (Cuthead's 'Fuck That Shit') and more. This is a love letter, in other words, not to a brief moment 35 years ago, but to house music more generally in all its wild, wonderful jacking glory. And you need it in your life.

Review: It has been quite a year for the Toolroom institution. Celebrating their 15th birthday last year, they weren't ones to rest on their laurels, instead going full steam ahead with a bunch of genre defining compilations this year. But most importantly they have been instrumental in the comeback of funky house after a 20 year dormancy, with killer releases by the likes of Weiss, Cashio and boss man Mark Knight himself. Add to that one banging party at Chicago Social Club for Amsterdam Dance Event and it's evident that these guys are proper 24 hour party people. With a glorious year sadly coming to an end, celebrate a wonderful one that was on Best Of Toolroom 2019 with highlights not limited to: the rework of the Cevin Fisher classic "Freaks Come Out" by Jack Back, Hannah Wants & Kevin Knapp's deep down and dirty "Call Me" (extended mix), UK heroes Alan Fitzpatrick & Wheats delivering the certified banger "M27" and New York legend Todd Terry teaming up with Tuff London on "Psychodrama" featuring Jasmien Nanhekhan. Review: For the 160th installment of elrow Music's catalogue, the Barcelona-based brand has reined in one of the current heroes of UK dance music Dale Howard, with some top shelf tech house for the main room at peak time. For the Soul EP, Howard delivers three original tracks: from the uplifting and emotive funky house vibe of "Soul" with its infectious disco vocal loops, this is followed up by the adrenalised and bass-driven action of "Off" which features one of the most massive drops you'll hear this year, and ending with the tough banger "Thick" with its massive drums and furious bassline balanced out by some irresistible diva vocal loops. Expect to be hearing these tracks a lot this summer.

Review: As you'd expect, given the label's runaway success over the past few years, there are plenty of very familiar cuts on this 52-track 'best of' from the all-conquering Toolroom, including GotSome's tribal smash 'Nomad Chat', label boss Mark Knight's infuriatingly catchy, flute-driven Shovell collab 'Selecao', Mendo's sample-heavy G-houser 'Mooving' and CamelPhat's remix of Fatboy Slim. But there are plenty of less heavily rinsed gems on offer too, and with tracks from the likes of D.Ramirez, Leftwing & Kody, Dosem, DJ S.K.T and Dale Howard plus reworks of Sterling Void and Todd Terry classics, it's a no-brainer for tech-house jocks on a budget.

Review: Mark Knight & Co. are straight up with their latest title - but considering their current 15th birthday celebrations, these guys can do whatever they want - they hardly do wrong anyway! House, Tech House, Techno Vol 2 does exactly what is says on the tin with a whopping 62 tracks and three continuous mixes - each dedicated to said subgenre. From that massive remix of Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" by current scene favourites CamelPhat, Saved main man Nic Fanciulli's collaboration with Damon Albarn on "Saying" (Kolsch remix), label head honcho Knight himself steps up to deliver the pumping and white noise filled "We Get High From The Music" (feat Mr V) and the inimitable Danny Howells is always welcome - particularly with a track as electrifying as the recently released "Isolar".

Review: Lee Foss' intention is to Repopulate Mars: ambitious as that is, we're pretty sure he'd turn in a good effort to Repopulate Miami this year - with this bunch of tech house heroes. 2018's fun in the sun is soundtracked by the likes of Bristol's Eli Brown on the tough rolling main room groove of "Cartegena", Verona's Federico Ambrosi with the bumpin' bass driven funk attack "Egypt" and rising UK star Dale Howard (Elrow/Toolroom) with his jacking and adrenalised dancefloor drama as heard on "Naughty Organ". Elsewhere, Malaga's Javi Lopez turns in a fine effort following up releases on top labels like and VIVa Music on the grinding pre-peak time people mover "Vibes Up".

Review: With the likes of Loco Dice, Ryan Crosson and many other tech house dons playing his music, Dale Howard is on a steep rise to the top of the game. His latest EP for Audiojack's Gruuv label is a three-track stomper backed with an effective, floor-ready remix by the Big Apple's MANIK. "Damaged", "Right On Time" and "Break" are all equally thumping house tracks with a swinging batch of percussion to boot. MANIK's remix of the title track is pure class, too - heavy, shuffling party noise.

Review: It's a sign of the ludicrously prolific nature of Mad Mats and Tooli's Local Talk imprint that this is their third compilation of label highlights this year. That the quality threshold remains impressively high is credit to their A&R skills. Encompassing revivalist US garage, twinkle-eyed deep house and enveloping groovery, Talking House Volume 3 is packed full of distinctive dancefloor highlights. Check, for example, the fearsome acid tweakery of Anaxander's breathless "My Aniseed Lollipop", the wide-eyed, piano-laden rush of Deep Space Orchestra's brilliant remix of The True Rebels' "Bitter Love", and the baggy, organ-heavy samba-house warmth of Tommy Rawson's "Don't Lose It". And that's just for starters. In a word: essential.

Review: After previously impressing with the excellent Throwback EP on Local Talk, Dale Howard brings his brand of energetic old skool revivalism to Mo. "Chancer" itself is a formidably sweaty concoction, all booming kicks, snappy snares, relentless cymbals, wonky vocal samples and eye-popping stabs. Compared to his previous work, it's impressively raw - an excellent example of the sheer power of a few simple elements, arranged perfectly. The slightly deeper "Never Know" features similarly garage-influenced drums, alongside a delicious analogue bassline and some warm but subdued chords. It sounds a bit like DJ Duke on downers, if that makes any sense. Either way, it sounds good.

Review: This Local Talk three-tracker from Dale Howard is seemingly inspired by too many late nights spent listening to old Mood II Swing jams; "Throwback (Dub)" is tough, bassy, authentically produced and unsurprisingly effective. That it sounds fresh, despite its vintage sounds and inspiration, is testament to the quality of Howard's production. The bouncier "In Out" throws more classic UKG influence in the pot alongside the basement-bothering NJ garage sounds, resulting in a formidable peaktime banger.
