Review: Thicker than clotted cream and twice as opulent, Golden Soul's latest label retrospective is well worth your attention. It focuses on material released by the Spanish imprint in 2019, which was arguably the label's strongest year to date. Label founder James Rod makes a number of killer contributions, with the colourful, bass-heavy Balearic nu-disco chug of "Let's Play Together" (a collaboration with Parissior) and the dreamy Italo-disco throb of "Heart Rock (Aleito Mix)" standing out. Elsewhere, get your ears around the sparkling, breakdown-boasting sunrise rush of Dubhouser's "Ereh" and the thrill-a-minute Euro-disco effervescence that is Hoochie Coochie Papa's "Work My Body".

Review: Mexican combo Dark Punk Hippies continue to slowly rise through the ranks. This tasty outing on Rare Wiri follows quietly impressive EPs for such labels as Spa In Disco, Thunder Jam and Golden Soul. In its original form, "Safari Zafado" is a curious but rather fine combination of mind-altering, Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, humid synthesizer motifs, reverb-laden vocal chants, warped analogue bass and loose limbed tribal percussion. Rayko reaches for the thickset boogie synth-bass on his wonderfully trippy revision, where echoing vocal chants and cascading electronic beeps help create a mesmerizing mood. To round things off, James Road re-imagines "Safari Zafado" is a warm and woozy chunk of sparkling nu-disco goodness.

Review: While Mexico's electronic music scene is arguably getting more press coverage than ever before, little has yet been written about off-the-radar duo Dark Punk Hippies. They've been bubbling under for some time, releasing exspanive EPs and epic singles for Spa in Disco. Now they've joined Thunder Jam, offering up a suitably sizable package that backs their original version of "Janko's Drug" - a pleasingly loose and elastic fusion of flute-laden Balearic bliss, lo-fi bleeps, acid-influenced funk-rock and squeezable, boogie style nu-disco flavours - with no fewer than ten titanic reworks. These range from the warm, deep and woozy flex of Situation's drowsy nu-disco interpretation and Kellini's killer, revivalist synth-funk take, to the deliciously low-slung vibe of Planet Jumper's trippy dub disco revision.
