Review: One of 2023's positive developments is the re-appearance of Dave Angel. Following a long period when he didn't release much material, the iconic UK producer has returned in style. The most recent outing was an excellent new release for Rekids and next up is Stairway To Heaven. It's the latest digital reissue of Angel's classic 90s material on R&S and starts with the unforgettable squelchy bass and dramatic builds of "Bounce Back". The high-paced tribal drums of "Sighting" provides a glimpse of the frenetic techno that became Angel's staple. "Trip To Darkness" embraces the hardcore sound that prevailed at the time, while the rolling groove of "Jungle Love" also reverberates to early 90s bass-heavy menace.

Review: Dave Angel is one of the UK's true techno originators. Combining Detroit's depth and his own background in jazz with frenetic rhythms, he has articulated this on an impressive catalogue of Eps, DJ mixes and artist albums. While Dave's output has been less frequent in recent years, this release for Rekids demonstrates that he remains a creative force to be reckoned with. The title track revolves around a sleek rhythm and steely percussion, which provide the basis for spine-tingling, filtered builds. "Peekaboo" has a tougher feel; looped chords are set to a driving groove, but Angel's soulful aesthetic is never too far away, and is expressed here through repetitive vocal samples.

Review: Dave Angel had a huge impact on techno throughout the 1990s, and this reissue of his 1991 1st Voyage EP shows why he was so influential. Angel's main legacy will be his contribution to integrating deeper sounds with high-paced techno rhythms, and the origins of that approach are audible on the sweeping strings of "Mesmerize", which CJ Bolland co-produced. However, 1st Voyage also impresses due to the UK producer's ability to deliver knockout club tracks. "Poison" unfolds to menacing thunder claps and Beltram-esque dissonance, while "Planet Function" is a jittery, rave-infused roller. On "Velocity", the UK producer conjures up a visceral vision of what ultimately became his signature sound, as eerie chords are fused with a tight rhythm. It's testament to Angel's vision that 30 years later, 1st Voyage remains a fascinating journey.

Review: V Recordings do some of the best compilations in the business and their brand new Foundation series is a natural recognition of that fact. They're not being hyperbolic with the usage of the term 'Foundation' either, because this is truly an overview of some of the scene's most foundational producers. Old-school Dillinja, Krust, Roni Size and DJ Die, amongst others, make up the roster of acts that formed an integral part of the genre back in the day. The new crew is also represented, however, in the form of L-Side, Think Tonk, Nasza Linez and loads more, all of whom bring some of that V-style heat. Wicked album - one for the heads.

Review: Aside from a number of influential releases for the likes of Belgium's R&S and Tronic, among other quality stables, Dave Angel has been at the forefront of John Digweed's Bedrock label over the last few years. He's back on it this week and he means business as usual; it's driving, effective house licks on "Scorpion", a chord-heavy club thrasher with the perfect crescendo, while "Orion" goes deeper and nastier, bringing in more sci-fi influences to the equation and plenty more percussive action to carry your feet on till the early morning.

Review: David Angelico Nicholas Gooden, or simply known as Dave Angel, is a British house and techno legend, that's just a fact. The man has been going string since 1990 and has appeared on everything from the mythical RCA, to London's very own R&S and his own Rotation imprint, of course. In 2015 he joins forces with John Digweed, another British dance music legend, and released an EP for the man's Bedrock institution. "Progress", as the name impartially suggests, is a classic progressive house monster for the big room, where hypnotic waves of sound are carried forwards by militant drums and percussion. "Stand Strong" carries more swing and its melodies are hidden deeper among the kick-snares, a rather memorable collection of sounds once they're freed from the depths of the mix.

Review: For those techno fans of a certain age, Dave Angel is a legend, the UK producer who almost single-handedly invented the high-paced 'jazz techno' sound. With the passage of time and age, Angel has lowered his tempo, but not his approach. The title track is an insistent affair led by repetitive stabs and a vocal sample intoning the title. The only new elements are the dubby inflections that lend the arrangement a more reflective feeling than usual. "Guru" is redolent of Angel's late 90s work. Here again the tempo is slower, but the snapping percussion, menacing bass and filtered builds sound inspired by his 39 Flavours of Tech Funk release.

Review: Had enough of Ibiza's pounding tribal house and party minimal sounds? Bedrock feels the same way. Or at least for the duration of this excellent compilation they do. Jon Digweed has used his A&R (and persuasive) powers to their fullest, commissioning ambient and down tempo pieces from artists more commonly associated with peak-time club bangers. King Unique and Charlie May contribute haunting, fragile ambient tracks; the Ibiza Summer Balearic remix of Jimmy Van M and AFFKT' "Dreams" featuring Luxor T comprises lazy beats and sun-kissed vocals, while best of all, the Japanese Popstars' "Out Of Nowhere (Reprise)" is a stunningly cinematic ambient trance piece.

Review: Dave Angel has been releasing electronic music for over 20 years, so it doesn't come as a surprise that his latest release is less frenetic than his jazz-techno records of yore. However, "Voodoo" is not short on the UK producer's signature techniques. Snares build and crash, smoky trumpets sound out in the background and a buzzing bassline provides the all-important backing. On "Tomahawk", the beats are stripped back and tough, but Angel can't resist adding musical elements and soon enough, it veers into hypnotic chord sequences. Finally, there's "Give it Up", which revisits his 39 Flavours of Tech-Funk mix thanks to its insistent percussion and dubby beats.

Review: If this compilation is anything to go by, Miami must have become a far more interesting musical place. From the tripped out melodies and humming bassline of Robert Babicz' "Rabbit Clouds", to the dramatic electronic disco pulses of Thodoris Triantafillou & CJ Jeff's "Body Clock", it sounds like the home of the WMC is no longer the preserve of pumped-up, thong-baiting cheesy house. Even the tribal grooves sound more wonky and out there, a progression that's audible on the dubbed out drums and Gregorian monk chant samples of Coyu & Ramiro Loez' "Diferencias". It's also heartening to hear Dave Angel features, and the beautiful synths and tight groove of "Keep It" show that he hasn't lost his magic touch.
