Review: You're only five years old once, so why not celebrate in style? And here Warrington lad Danny Worrall's disco and re-edits label Masterworks Music do just that, with an anniversary collection packing a whopping 50 back catalogue nuggets. You'll excuse us the full track-by-track, then, but suffice to say that this is the label that helped launch the careers of Dr Packer and Natasha Kitty Katt, both of whom feature here, and with names like Ziggy Phunk, Rayko, Alkalino, Chuggin' Edits and Fabiolous Barker also on bill, you should already have a pretty good idea what to expect. Classy stuff all round, and a great VFM package - here's to five more years!

Get The Funk Out Ma' Face - (4:53) 114 BPM Hot
Review: Three satisfying slices of nu-skool funk/hip-hop here from Greek label Chopshop Music, who celebrate their 10th birthday this year. 'Pineapple Soup' will appeal to fans of artists like The Aspects, Speedometer or Dr Meaker with its male vocal, female cut-ups, wukka-wukking geetar and exuberant brass (including a very familiar phrase borrowed from a disco-era smash by Rod Stewart), 'Get The Funk Out Ma' Face' is a more down 'n' dirty funk jam with JBs aspirations and a chanted chorus-cum-breakdown, while 'La Da Da' plays us out on a soundtrack-y note with cascading hand percussion and a fat, muffled bassline.

Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits label has now notched up 50 releases. To celebrate this landmark occasion, the man himself has selected 25 of his favourite cuts from the label's rapidly expanding back catalogue. As a showcase for everything that's good about the imprint, it does a bang up job, gleefully jogging between exotic mid-tempo disco and disco-funk (Frank Virgilio, Dr Packer, The funk District), slo-mo disco-acid (Fingerman's tremendous rework of B-Jam's "Sundog"), kaleidoscopic, reworked '80s boogie business (Casual Connection, Melon Bomb, the hard-tweaked filters and heady loop business of Chewy Rubs), tried-and-tested party-starters (Smashed Atoms, Get Down Edits remixing Stephen Richards) and giddy peak-time workouts (Shit Hot Soundsystem, Dave Gerrard, Thomas Maslo, Kiu D). As the old saying goes, this is all killer, no filler.

Review: Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint has packed in a lot of releases over the past 12 months, as this expansive roundup of the label's second year in business proves. Featuring 27 tracks and a bonus mix by the South Coast dwelling label boss, there's naturally plenty to admire. Highlights include, but are not limited to, the rolling, head-nodding grooves of Eyeco M's "Keeping It To Myself", the killer proto-house throb of "Tonight" by Bad Barbie vs Evil Smarty, the sexy, string-drenched disco loveliness of P-Sol's "Can't You See", LTJ's trumpet-boasting funk bumper "Fat Thing", and the hard-wired, bass-heavy rework of Julia & Company's "Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba)" by Melon Bomb. It is, though, all pretty darn hot.

The Mango Beats EP
Repeat The Funk - (5:49) 111 BPM
Review: Stafford's Dave Gerrard has been around for over 30 years so you can trust the DJ on this one. He's back on his usual stomping ground for more disco goodies on DJ Butcher's Chopshop out of Athens, Greece. He first takes the knife to the Jackson 5's "Dancing Machine" on "Generation 5" (great edit this one!), then he turns in an edit of a proper soul funk classic on "Repeat The Funk" (any guesses?) but finally he gives a Bill Withers classic a makeover on "You Got The Stuff". Class!

Sound Of The 80's
Automatic - (8:05) 111 BPM Hot
Review: A veteran of esteemed edit labels like ChopShop, Sound Exhibitions and Hot Digits, Dave Gerrard is back on Masterworks Music with the Chorley FM-style EP "Sounds Of The 80s". Going straight for the party jugular, he tackles some megahits of the decade of excess - dubbing out Belouis Some's sleaze-popper "Imagination" and speeding up Sly Fox's pounding electro funk stomp "Lets Go All the Way". Then it's time for a subtle tweak of The Pointer Sisters much loved "Automatic", Depeche Mode's "Just Cant Enough" gets a percussive makeover and The Art Of Noise's proto industrial chaos is intensified on "Who's Afraid".

Something That You Do - (6:23) 114 BPM Hot
Feel So Good - (5:48) 112 BPM
Review: Of late, Dave Gerrard has been gallivanting around town, flirting with all the hottest re-edit labels going. His latest musical paramour is none other than Hot Digits, a freshly squeezed clinch of which the fruits are certainly not made from concentrate. Once again uplifting '70s party vibes are the order of the day, with "Use My Body" being a slow, twanging raunch-fest, while "Coming To You Live" is a hypnotic brassy disco pulsator. "Something That You Do To Me" sounds like the Jackson family at their glittery peak, and finally "Feel So Good" ends proceedings with a breaky, melodramatic mood-jam.

Review: Having already carved a decent name for himself in the nu-disco universe, 80s Child (aka Danny Worrall), now turns his hand to running labels. Masterworks is his new imprint, and this eponymous compilation is its debut release. It's a total all-you-can-eat buffet of contemporary disco, featuring a whole host of familiar names. There are a whopping 23 tracks on here, some of the best include Tomas Malo's sultry grinder, "After The Rain", Yam Who?'s bouncy sunkissed disco joint "Find Out" and the digi-freestyle breaks of TV's "Love Situation".

Fused Funk Vol 03

Funk Monks - "Losers" - (3:49) 110 BPM
Review: If you like your funk and breakbeats a little dirtier, than Funk Fusion have the grease to grind those gears. Terry Wagun drops a wobbly, saw-wave bassline over a choral of Lily Allen vocals in the opening track, while Mr Bristow slugs out some dirty low-end similar to Mr Oizo's "Analog Worms Attack" in his addition. For a crunchy, slowed down, stoners version of Pharrell's "Happy" there's 2RUD's "Happy Ska" - and don't forget Dave Gerrad's mashup of Queen and Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" in his Funkadelic "Kurtis Breaks". Some bass-heavy 808 beats like Felix Da Housecat's "Kickdrum" rumble under a pair of titan hip hop vocals in "Turn Down For Hip Hop" thanks to Lil Jon and Fatman Scoop samples which spit over the top of Major Lazer synths. Get fused.

Review: It seems that the nu-disco trend of re-edits is one that just keeps growing. Everyone from Siberia to Greece is doing it, and now the fever has spread to Ireland too in the form of the Get Down Edits label. Thankfully these guys don't (usually) pick the obvious stuff - Fingerman samples Luther Vandross' "Never Too Much" on "Too Much" so they lose points for that, but generally it's all good jazzy, funky retro jams.

Chopshop Music Turns Me On Vol 2
Capitan Futuro - "Love Me Crazy" - (5:47) 112 BPM
Review: With a sly wink and a beckoning wave of the hand, Chopshop invite us into their boudoir for another seductive trip into slinky rework territory. As usual, many bases are covered. Captain Futuro kicks things off with "Love Me Crazy", a slo-mo disco-flecked hip-hop head-nodder. Label supremo DJ Butcher turns Dave Gerard's "Twisted Message" (a sneaky bootleg version of the Furious Five classic) into a disco funk-breaks smasher, before laying down some revivalist rare groove fun in the shape of his own "However Do You Want Me" (a rework of Soul II Soul's "Back To Life"). A decidedly sensual package is completed by the misty-eyed headiness of Ill Advised "Superstition" (yep, a remake of that "Superstitition").

Chopshop Music Turns Me On
Dave Gerrard - "In The Mix" - (6:22) 110 BPM
Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from re-edit/mash-up/rework specialists Chopshop; namely the kind of sophisticated, floor-friendly concoctions that appeal to both geeks and party-starters alike. This split EP features plenty more material to tickle the fancy of DJs, from the Clav-heavy disco groovery of Ill Advised's "Inside Out" (a smart Odyssey cover) and block party disco-funk of Captain Futuro ("Booty Express"), to the needless-but-fun Indeep cut-up "In The Mix" by Dave Gerrard. Best of all, though, is the fluid re-touch by Greg Wilson of DJ Butcher's "Music Turns Me On", a sweet cut-and-paste effort that's pitched just right.
