Review: A quarter of a century after the first compilation hit record stores, the 24th instalment of Kompakt's popular 'Total' series appears. As its predecessors did, the set rounds up dancefloor-focused label highlights from the last 12 months. While the Cologne-based label does not enjoy the same amount of coverage it once did, its' releases are just as strong as ever - as 'Total 24' emphatically proves. For proof, check the glassy-eyed deep electro-pop of Tee Mango's 'So In Love', the deep space electro of 'Laika' by Rex The Dog, the pulsating techno maximalism of Michael Mayer's 'Urian', the deep, dubby and dreaming dancefloor psychedelia of Ada's rework of 'Talking Man' by Heido Voss, the Moroder-goes-techno throb of Gui Boratto and Darren Emerson's 'The Shell', and the twisted tech-house-funk of 'Your Fault' by Raxon.
Review: Innervisions' latest offering delivers a pair of tracks from rising stars whose previous output has hinted at great things to come. First up is Deer Jade, who follows up ear-catching outings on Kompakt, Diynamic Music and Still Vor Talent with the constantly rising brilliance of 'Firmament'. Rooted to peak-time dancefloors by a sturdy, locked-in tech-house groove, the track is blessed with seemingly endless waves of attractive electronic melodies, sparkling piano riffs and expertly placed effects. Sometime Signature and Renaissance artist Santiago Garcia joins forces with long-serving label hopper Sam Farsio on 'Back To Basics', a genuinely deep and at times spaced-out slab of tech-house/21st century progressive house fusion - all locked-in loops, distant female vocal samples, cyclical motifs and restless bottom-end weight.
Review: Despite her status as a globe-trotting purveyor of "melodic music" that "takes you on a journey through time and space", Deer Jade has not released all that much music. In fact, this two-track outing for Cologne's mighty Kompakt Records marks her solo debut. She dials up the mysticism on title track 'Jukrupa', a swirling and trippy cut built around complex, intricately programmed percussion, bold bass and twinkling piano motifs that recall rushing old school house. Her love of all things psychedelic comes to the fore on 'Cosmic Dream', where mutant acid bass, echoing electronic motifs, hazy chords and trance-inducing TB-303 lines deliver nods to formative UK progressive house.
