Review: Long live team Alpha Pup, an excellently organised project that have moved onto the third edition of their epic '20/20' compilation series, exploring the most lethal reaches of underground bass music. Featuring hard hitting originals from the likes of Ivy Lab, Dismantle, Rocks FOE, Bakey and more, it's clear that the team have gone all out on this collection, with sounds ranging as wide as the hardcore inspired mysticism of 'Naananaana' from Rohaan, to the industrial techno-flavours of Ila Brugal's 'Cynical'. The whole project packs a punch, but our highlights would have to include both the intense metallic madness of Deft's 'OKURTHEEXPERT', alongside Manni Dee's monstrous 'Wet Slide' creation. Top work all around!

Review: The Critical Music team have pulled out all the stocks for this latest outing, welcoming both Hyroglifics and Deft to the table for an explosive two-track display, readying the ravers for a raucous affair. Firstly 'Two For Two', combines gnarly reese-bass inspired textures with glittering soundscapes to give us an absolute rollercoaster of sonic mastery. From here, we then jump into a more classic sound Critical display as the pair once again combine, this time for a neurotic excursion, doused in lethal synthetic design and sharpened drum textures, giving us a fiery display. Once again, the Critical team impressed!

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: Combie the talents of Deft (aka Yip Wong) and Lewis James and you'll discover a trove of genre defining drum and bass, to dubstep, hip hop and experimental labels like Project Mooncircle, Exit Records, 1985 Music and 20/20LDN. Collaboratively the pair now debut on Def's freshly minted B4 Music with an EP that traverses wild soundscapes and bassline designs as much as it does the grit and tension of industrially savage UK dance music. Kicking off with "Peepo" you find its snarls and roaring metallic gestures make way for the spiralling, tribal and melodic refrains in "Octo". Dramatic, even hardcore elements, arrive in through the brutal effect of amps and delays that scream in unison on "Wolf 503 B", with the EP's lead track taking the listener deep into a world of torn, screwed, dubbed out and cut up bass music. Plug in - this goes deep.

Review: Emerging back in 2014 for pioneering German label Project Mooncircle, Yip Wong aka Deft, later hooked up with 20/20 London for a trilogy of releases that culminated in Deft's 2019 debut album Cracks. Exploding into 2020 furthermore, Deft arrives on the newly established Hooversound Recordings for its second release. A booming and bombastic four-track exploding from all sides, this is serious stuff; from the epic orchestral strings and wiley flexin vocals of "ESKILUSIVE" to the snapping, future Detroit electro of "BURNA". Frenetic rhythms with heavy hitting staccato beats conjure up a storm of roughneck percussion in "NEW YORKS FINEST VIP" with a funkier, more liquid dubstep number landing firm in "KOOVER IN '92". Relentless and uncompromising club music. TIP.

Review: Alix Perez's 1985 sets the bar again... Edition 3 is another instalment of their spotless V/A series which covers the label's broad range of shades. This one is a game of two halves as the first five tracks flex around the 140 region with crucial slabs from Halogenix's Lordel alias and dubstep men of the moment Ternion Sound. Meanwhile the second half flips to D&B with a whole clutch of impressive designs; Visages' "Memories" is a mournful stepper, Bredren get bad-ass with the thumpy, bumpy "Only One", Machinedrum brings some outstanding soul on "Braided Leaves" and Perez delivers three of his finest. Bring on Edition 4.

Review: We are always keen to sit down and explore the more unusual areas of electronic music, often finding ourselves loving more ambient, stripped back pieces of production. With that in mind we have found an absolute gem in this brand new album from Deft, who gets busy with 12 original pieces of stunning sound design. The title track 'Cracks' shows exactly what we are in for, as a wash of colourful synths and harmonies cascade upon our ears, followed by the more experimental drum work and unpredictability of tracks like 'Rollon' and 'Scope'. For us, we have to recommend this one being taken in during a long play sitting, but want to highlight both the incredible atmospheric designs of 'Coil' and squishy percussive expanses of 'Constant K' as favourites for this one.

Review: 1985 Music was founded by Alix Perez a year or two ago and, since then, has rapidly become one of the premier destinations for forward-thinking sonics that inhabit the 85-170bpm spectrum. With a fresh roster including Monty, Submarine and Perez himself, Edition 2 is a showcase of both the producers and sounds that Alix has in his orbit. There are too many outstanding tracks to recount here, but 'Drones' by Cesco stands out as one of the most creative: a subby, stepping halftime cut with an ingenious drum pattern. There's weighty rollers, too, including 'Swayed' by Bredren and 'Good To Me' by Perez and Monty, both of which are sublime examples in minimal construction. A truly sick collection of tracks.

Review: Ivy Lab provides Critical Music with its first physical release of 2014 with a four-track EP. To begin with there's the piano-ambient introduction of "Missing Persons", which in a way sounds like a highly sped-up Burial track combined with Frank Carter III's vocals full of a similar sounding soul heard in Storm Queen's crossover hit "Look Right Through". The drums remain super-quick on "Live On Your Smile" alongside warbled computer bleeps and melancholic female vocals, while "Sunday Crunk" is a hip hop-inspired, MPC-styled slow jam that may well take its inspirations from southern rap. Lastly on this deluxe package, Project: Mooncircle and 2nd Drop artist Deft touches-up Ivy Lab & Emperor's "Pepper" for something verging on heavy dubstep mixed with some growling, Fis-like effects

Review: Given her current popularity, it's no surprise to see all-conquering house hero Maya Jane Coles mixing the latest instalment of !K7's long-running DJ Kicks series. The diminutive DJ/producer is in fine form, too, mixing up typically atmospheric house cuts and clandestine deepness with saucer-eyed late night faves and forgotten B-sides (see Bozzwell's surprisingly emotional "In My Cocoon"). As a mix it's as deep, melodic and groovy as you'd expect, with a strong vocal theme running throughout. As it progresses, it tiptoes further into bleary-eyed darkroom territory, via stand-out cuts from Marcel Dettmann, Caribou (his thrilling remix of Virgo Four), Gerry Read and T Williams. Available digitally as individual tracks or one continuous mix!
