Review: James Denny may not get the media coverage of some of his contemporaries, but his track record - which includes singles on REKIDS, Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebels - is exemplary. It makes sense, then, that Shall Not Fade boss Kieran Williams has added him to the label's ever-expanding roster. Opener 'Dans La Nuit', a charging and sample-rich slab of peak-time house joy rich in jazzy guitar licks, bouncy beats and 'Knights of the Jaguar' sty;e synth strings, is the pick of a very strong bunch, but the other two tracks on show are excellent too. King Crowney collaboration 'Dance With Me' is a sizzling and humid, percussion-and-trumpet-heavy slab of Latin house hedonism, while 'Anni 80' sees him create hands-aloft gold out of unfussy house beats and synth-heavy samples from a long-forgotten 1980s treat.

Review: Global Underground's' Select' series acts as a kind of annual nod to all the electronic music that floats their boat, with each digital download edition offering two (uncredited) CD-length mixes and full then versions of each included cut. 2024's edition - volume nine in total - is naturally packed to the rafters with tasty tracks from both established producers and rising stars. Review: It's that time of year again, when the industry's finest head en masse to one of the biggest events in global dance music - WMC. As always, the Toolroom family will be a known presence throughout the week-long festivities, and here's a sneak preview of the future classics they'll be dropping at this year's parties in The Magic City. Label chief Mark Knight naturally kicks things off (in collaboration with Mason) on the sweltering funky house of "Givin' Up", label stalwart Maxinne teams up with Chicago veteran Gene Farris on the deep tribal workout "Our House", the ascendant Carly Wilford & Anelisa Lamola keep on with the uplifting vocal house energy on "We Rise" while the always impressive GotSome teams up with Kokiri for the Inner City-inspired "Big Time Love" (feat Tasty Lopez) plus the welcome addition of Kittball Records boss Juliet Sikora with Tini Gessler on the high tech minimal of "Tidy Up" among many others. Review: Following up releases on Hot Creations, Stereo Productions and Crosstown Rebels, Leeds-based Denney is back with this new thriller on Knee Deep In Sound - returning to follow up 2018's terrific Serenade EP. Packed with more surefire sounds for long hot hedonistic nights on the White Isle, such as the saxophone-driven mood music of "Reflections Of Time" (a progressive house epic if we've ever heard one!) followed by the trance-inducing tribal groove of "Check The System". This one calls to mind the sounds of the legendark New York City institution Twilo at the turn of the millenium.

Review: It is indeed time for a "West Coast Revival", as it seems to be a hotspot for electronic music at present - but we're preaching to the choir really. Its well known that Los Angeles is a second home of sports to label bosses Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, and one of the very inspirations behind their Hot Creations label - now running on eight years strong. Middlesbrough-based producer James Denney (Saved, Relief, Knee Deep In Sound) certainly subscribes to the west coast is best coast mentality too, as heard on the track's deep, funky and lo-slung groove. Who else was best suited to the remix that one of the main proponents of the west coast tech-house sound himself: Hipp-E. The Californian veteran applies his unmistakable hypnotic sounds on the remix, as well a funked-up and percussive rework by man of the moment Mele from Liverpool - in his idiosyncratic style as always.

Review: With Ibiza's extended summer season almost upon us, Toolroom has served up a suitably epic collection of cuts that it expects to be big on the White Isle this summer. Label boss Mark Knight has provided a trio of DJ mixes ("Poolside", "Club" and "Afterclub") and the unmixed tracks included all fit into these loose categories. There's not enough room to list all of the highlights, but we've been enjoying the funk-fuelled disco-house rush of Illyus and Barrientos' "The One", the sleazy, bass-heavy bounce of Max Chapman's "Steppa", the acid-powered tech-house-jack of Del-30's "Gravity" and the weighty, mind-altering thump of "Low End Theory" by Eli Brown.

Highlights come courtesy of: Torontonian legend and Rawthentic boss Carlo Lio on the fierce banger "Hear This", ascendant Brit Denney getting slinky and hypnotic on the tight groove of "Mind Control", right through to American Anthony Attala's headrush inducing "Cypress (featuring the biggest drop you'll hear this year!) and promising stuff by former NBA basketballer Rony Seikaly ("Groove It") and Calabrian upstarts ItaloBros on "Blaston".

Review: Leeds man James Denney is back after a strong release on Nic Fanciulli's Saved imprint - this brand a new killer for local powerhouse Knee Deep In Sound titled "Serenade" comes with a series of tight remixes. Where the original treads a slinky and hypnotic route accompanied by sleek 303 acid, funky cowbells and sexy vocals, UK legend Bushwacka takes it down a darker more tunnelling route for the late night. Elsewhere, New York City's Joeski strips things down and goes deeper - he even offers an Alternative remix at the end which pumps it up with some tough syncopated rhythm patterns with added dancefloor dynamics.

Review: K producer James Denney has appeared on esteemed labels such as Relief, Heidi Presents The Jackathon and Hot Creations in only a short amount of time. This will however be his second offering on Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels: where he teams up with veteran UK producer D.Ramirez. We are pretty sure he still rocks a pretty fabulous hair-do, too! They team up on the dark dancefloor drama of "Stranger Things" which calls to mind the minimal sound of the mid noughties, in particular Konrad Black or Mathew Jonson. Bristolian producer and Skeleton boss Dubspeeka provides a respectful remix which injects more mood and atmosphere into proceedings and backs that epic spoken word performance really well. Second original offering entitled "Afraid" is a dark electro house stomper that reaches near tribal moments and that razor sharp bassline.

Review: Ralph Lawson's esteemed 20/20 Vision imprint has constantly re-defined the tech house sound for over twenty years now and not content with such an accolade he's launched another sub-label 20/20 Editions, which like its name suggests: will be limited vinyl releases. Thankfully they'll be offering them up digitally too, following up great previous releases by Sidney Charles and NTFO. Fellow Leeds lad Denney is up next with "Bambuko" the original mix is a sexy and slinky bass assault with the main funk groove supported by a buzzy synth bass plus some 303 acid for better measure. The remix by The Mekanism takes the track right into the peak time slot in the Gruuv/Saved kind of vein with a rocking groove after the massive white noise fuelled drop!

Review: Emerging star out of Leeds Denney is still hot from recent releases for Hot Creations and Poker Flat and now makes his debut on the legendary Steve Lawler's Viva Music with some slinky tech house grooves set to explode on the island or any or other beach party for that matter! "On & On" features a tight rhythm beneath a bouncy, razor sharp bassline and powerful diva vocals; ticks all the right boxes. The "Monday Club Mix" gets a bit more on the late night tech house tip; a bit darker and sleazier. The legendary Justin Robertson of Lionrock fame lends his hand on a deft remix; the "Deadstock 33s Remix" is a bleepy minimal groove with a resonating, hands in the air melody that sounds somewhere between Marc Houle and Will Clarke. Finally "This Is Music" is a grinding, squelchy 303 acid stormer that even still manages to squeeze in some diva vocals; mental! The Waifs & Strays remix takes the acid into deeper and darker territory with another rolling late night groove that'd appeal to fans of Gruuv or Saved.

Their combination of contemporary house grooves with classic house, disco, boogie and garage influences now dominates dancefloors the world over. This label retrospective tells the story of their runaway success between 2011 and 2012, offering up three hours of unmixed floorfillers from the likes of Waifs & Strays, Miguel Campbell, Burnski, PBR Streetgang, Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, plus a smattering of lesser-known gems. For those who missed the label's formative years, there's also a tasty bonus mix of early material from Russ Yallop.

Review: With Hot Creations hurtling towards global dancefloor domination at a furious pace, it's down to their Hot Waves label to serve up more intriguing underground treats. This fourth collection of previously unreleased odds and ends features some contributions from well-known names - see Buckley's party-hearty, ragga-tinged "Back To The Tower" and the strobe light shuffle of Simon Baker and Robert James' "Get Up High" - but mostly impresses with its support of new and little-known talent. Few, for example, will have heard of Human Life & Annabel Englund (whose "Falling" is a synth-pop flavoured deep house delight) or Denny (check the thrilling, cowbell-powered "Shake The Club"), but their unheralded contributions stand out. If you're after hot new house, look no further.

Review: This summer, Steve Lawler is hosting a midweek party at Sankeys Ibiza under the Viva Warriors title. Here, he joins forces with fellow resident Darius Syrossian to lay down a two disc mix set that touches on all of his usual inspirations. That means an atmospheric trawl through nuggety darkroom house, tribal flavours and murky tech-house, with additional helpings of basement-baiting New York deepness and European fluidity. In truth, Viva Warriors is arguably more fun and upbeat than many of Lawler's recent mixes, suggesting a new-found love of reaching out for the lasers and hip-wigglin' groovery. Maybe that's Syrossian's influence; either way, it makes for an enjoyable two-disc mix-up.
