Review: Hot Gorilla Records, self-styled purveyors of "disco for funky monkeys", has enjoyed a very successful 2023 - as this timely round-up of the imprint's finest moments of the year emphatically proves. Check first the summery, party-starting disco-goes-house joy of Dexter Jones' 'Space Sister', before admiring the horn-heavy, edit-not-edit excellence of Andy Buchan's 'Shake What You Got' and the Brenda Taylor-sampling boogie-meets-nu-disco fusion of 'Lovers Boogie' by Solazz. Highlights elsewhere across the compilation include the 21st century disco-funk of Harlem Dance Club's 'Shake a Hand', the eyes-closed peak-time rush of Fray Bentos' 'No Lies', and the rolling, effects-laden hedonism of 'Feels So Good' by Pete Whitely.

Review: Arriving just in time for the summer season, Hot Digits delivers a compilation that is tailor made to soundtrack lazy, hazy days. Even Funkier's "Feel So Good Inside" is an irresistible, funk-fuelled disco groove, while Ben Jamin's "Handle" inhabits a similar space. Soaked in wailing guitar and soulful vocals, it's a wonderfully infectious track. Both Andy Buchan and P-Sol raise the tempo with string-filled disco workouts, while Fray Bentos' "Danced To Death" offers a more electronic take on this sound. The compilation does veer towards house on occasion - most impressively with the subtle drum builds and chord progressions on Down Under Disco's "On My Mind". In the main though, Year Nine impresses most when it draws on disco and funk influences, such as the raucous party jam that is label owner Fingerman's collaboration with Chewy Rubs, "Block Party Bad Boy".

With 30 full-length cuts plus two hour-long DJ mixes there's no room here to go into every track, but whether you like it deep n' chuggy, funky n' furious or boogie-tastic n' soul-tinged, you'll find plenty of fresh ammo for your disco machine gun here.

Review: Having recently notched up a sixth year in business, Fingerman's Hot Digits imprint is in a celebratory mood - hence this all-action round-up of recent delights and unheard treats from the disco-loving label. Encompassing no less than 30 tunes, the collection giddily skips between warming beatdown disco (P-Sol's "Walter"), Mark E style slo-mo loop jams (Vigi's "I'll Be There") and glassy-eyed Balearic nu-disco (Picklejam's "Untitled Love"), before raising its hands skywards as the peak-time party-starters begin to appear thick and fast. Highights in this category include the vibrant jazz-house flex of Dexter Jones' "Swing Thing", the bustling boogie re-edit business of Monsieur Von Pratt's "Let's Dance" and the hearty disco-funk heaviness of Chewy Rubs' "Funky Bee Bop".

Review: Irish producer Dexter Jones' production CV reads like a Who's Who of modern disco labels, with outings on Midnight Riot, Rare Wiri, Hot Digits and Discoholics Anonymous, among others. Now, he puts another notch in that impressive bedpost thanks to this nifty little two-tracker for Hot Gorilla. 'Space Sister' is up first, a sprightly, fluttery disco roller with insistent piano chords and a chorus'd female "one more time" vocal that loops pretty much throughout - hold back till peaktime for maximum euphoric effect. The accompanying 'Gorilla Groove', by way of contrast, drops down into a dirtier, funkier groove but is just as irresistible.

Review: Two quite laidback joints here courtesy of UK disco stalwart Dexter Jones, brought to you by Rayko's Rare Wiri imprint. 'Mello Dino' is up first and has perhaps most in common with the spangly nu-disco of artists like Ilja Rudman or Sare Havlicek, but would slot equally well into afternoon 'beach house'-type sets. The title track itself is in a similarly mellow vein, but in this case augmented with the kind of squalling, FX-laden jazz-funk/rock geetar that, to these ears, always conjures memories of US sitcom themes from the late 70s. In the best possible way, you understand!

Review: Ireland's Dexter Jones serves up a four-tracker on Fingerman's Hot Digits Music. Whether these are re-edits or just heavily sample-based productions isn't entirely clear, but opener 'Feel' is a female-vocalled funk/boogie jam that could pass for Janet Jackson in a dim light, while on the title track Jones drops down into out-and-out funk mode, foregrounding a sinuous bassline and melancholic horns. 'Jan Jam' then sits somewhere between early 80s boogie and shimmering Nang-esque nu-disco, before the EP winds up in full-on boogie territory with 'I Want You Back', which bites the vocal The Jones Girls' 'On Target' from 1983.

Review: Some classy contemporary disco fare here from Irish producer Jones, coming to you courtesy of Israeli label Thunder Jam. 'Fluty Loops' itself opens with an intricate, extended percussive intro, before funk geetar and stabby strings usher in the meandering flute line that gives the track its title - imagine Joey Negro remixing Roy Ayers and you're somewhere in the ballpark. 'Everybody' shows the same attention to detail in the percussion department but has a more Chic-ish vibe, while completing the EP is the more sultry 'Been So Hard', which comes on like Linda Clifford given a Balearic makeover...

Review: Ireland's Dexter Jones serves up three reworked dancefloor nuggets from days gone by. 'Don't Stop' opens with an extended, Italo-esque synth intro, then bursts suddenly into life around the two-minute mark with a great big horns riff and a vocodered male "don't stop" vocal that alternates with a female vocal chorus singing "don't stop the music", though where these elements have come from we can't tell you (and no, it's not Yarburgh & Peoples!). The male-vocalled soul/boogie grooves of 'Get On Down', on the other hand, have been lifted from Raydio's 'It's Time To Party Now' from 1980, while there's more "boogie bassline + soulful harmonies" action on the closing 'Split Personality'.

Review: Dexter Jones is an artist so new he hasn't even finished his SoundCloud profile yet. This, ladies and gentlemen, is how Yam Who? roll when searching for the latest talent for their Midnight Riot label. He may be a newbie but Jones has the production chops of a veteran. "Step Into The Mood" starts things with some tight funk guitar, bongo rhythms and falsetto vocals. Next, "Disco Poison" is all about mellow keys and afternoon poolside fantasy, "Hope You Feel The Same" is pure 80s chrome and carpet slap-bass-boogie and "Funkador" is a dreamy up tempo disco house serenade.
