Review: Sub-liminal brings an end to the year that was, going out all guns blazing with on Air Part 2 featuring a bunch of wicked VIPs. Label staple Agro serves up several collaborations on here with the likes of Mentah, Raz, Diligent Fingers and Ghxsty. There's also a few offerings by the ever reliable Yatuza; our pick being the wonky stepper of "Distance" with Master Error. Elsewhere, Pyro pops up a few times throughout and was in fine form on "Smithdown Bass" and Prestige handed in a couple of quality dubs with neurofunk cut "Logical" being our pick of the bunch.

Review: Everyone likes a good compilation, right? What's better than having as big a range of artists as possible in one condensed place? It's essentially an album with the ease of listening of a single, so we're all for it. Subliminal have come out with the 2020 edition in their Riddim Return series and it's packed full of bangers, across a range of styles, and it's one of those albums which doesn't try to be cool or sophisticated by chucking in a few fillers for the sake of diversity - it's just hard stuff here. It works great, with Sam Harris' tendency for muscular minimosity coming on loud and clear on Boom Ting, a wickedly devilish and driving roller.

Review: Forget your daft screechy dubstep variant of the same name, Sub-liminal deal strictly in proper riddims. Wobbly riddims, fat riddims, stinking riddims, gully riddims. They have done for almost five years now, and this new Riddim Return collection is a reminder of just how much ground they cover, how many super talented darksmiths they work with and how much skin of yours their releases will melt. Highlights on this 50 track strong collection (yes, 50!) come from every angle but you'd be mad not to lick a shot from Agro & Raz on their melted bass weird-out "Ah Like It", do air trumpet to Warhead's "Cop Killa" or get wonked the heck out by Leaf's concrete steps on "Hold Up". Dig hard and take a deep breath... You're in riddim country.

Ranging from the white knuckle neuro pace of Fena's "Viral" to Dominator's gamechanging grumpy-bass twist on Agro's "Noise Complaint" via Dialogue's ultra-grot wobbler "If You Can't Beat 'Em", Tyrant's Nightflight-style jungle slap-about "Bomb", Agro's sinful stepper "Tank" and many more, this is a perfect snapshot of the label's breadth, weight and uncompromised sound so far. Riddim stinkers.

Review: Get your buckets out and fill them up... It's "Feeding Season" at the zoo and, judging by the outrageously fat bass groove the monsters are hank marvin. Expanding and mutating on every 32, there's an old school G-Dubs feel the riff and as it punches and evolves. "Acting Up" provides the dessert. A crisp rolling damager with an on-point vocal hook and some superb development in the layered drums. Another bullseye release from the ever-reliable Dialogue.

Review: "If You Can't Beat Em" demands you raise your lighters. Bad news for non-smokers. Good news for skankers thanks to the swaggering, well-measured dub hook that really digs in on the breakdown. Incredible news for the mandem who love a gully riff. "Jazz Hands" puckers up with more of a classical smooch thanks its majestic swooning piano intro before going all-out sloppy snog with its butt-grunting bass tones on the drop. Two killer tracks loaded with contrast... These are hard to beat.

Review: Pleasure, Turno, Guv, Majistrate, Dialogue, Cabbie... Could Sweet Tooth possibly fit more heavyweight jump up barons onto one EP? Pleasure presses the ignition with the cold and unforgiving "Bushwaka" before Turno switches the game to chaos mode with another one of his trademark atonal hard-scuff basslines. Elsewhere we find Dialogue balancing classical strings with classical jump-up sub wobbles ("Hold Your Hats"), Guv getting lively with hype-charged risers and a snappy hornet bassline ("Wu Tang") and Majistrate and Pleasure going toe-to-toe in an ardent no-holds-barred gully bass battle ("No Way Out"). Cabbie closes the show with the no-nonsense "Cut The Talk". Game over.

Review: It's the fire right here from Hangar who once again have come to the table with some nasty, low down drum and bass indebted to Ed Rush's seminal Virus Recordings, and done damn well. First up Sativa Dub & Raz's "Don't Get Lippy" with MC Nutcracker's spitfire rhyming over the most perverse exercise in bass therapy. Secondly Dialogue's "Fire Stance" sounds more like old Ink & Loxy with its old school, breakneck Jungle breakbeat and undoubtedly the filthiest bassline you'll hear all year. Tip!

Review: Playaz get back on the grind for this sexy little number from new fella Dialogue. First up, the title track "For The Love" blends sweetheart vocals with the filthiest bassline in living memory. "Made up Words" quickly follows with a kung-fu flava given by sweet Eastern melodies. "Stink Bomb" is truly a scorcher, taking tension from cinematic references and lining it up with heavy bass and heavier breaks. Finally, dubiously-titled "War Thongs" adds a militant stance, stomping hard and coming on strong with seriously warped bass. Versatile jump-up is hard to come by - grab this with both hands

The ruffians from Hype's Playaz have come out to play for the seventh installment of the now legendary The Flavours series, and good gracious is it a scorcher. Featuring a tech-heavy stepper called "Very Exciting" (agreed) by newcomer Konichi to break you in, the second track is a deep, devastating roller courtesy of big man Philth with politically charged vox from P-Fine. The rest of the EP comes on strong with heavy-hitting tunes from Serum, the ever-gorgeous Chromatic and Nu Elements as well as some hugely promising newcomers. Review: Gun Audio continues to shoot directly into the heart of D&B culture with this extensive six track EP. Between them, Total Recall and Dialogue touch on every corner of the genre. And they do so with heavyweight panache. "State Of Life" bumps and jitters with a gnarly bass riff before a string section flies in from nowhere and knocks you off your feet. "Keep Em Coming", meanwhile, is a much funkier affair with subtle disco influences buried deep in the grit. Elsewhere we're stunned by the use of a Kings Of Tomorrow sample on "Thief In The Night" and pummelled into bass submission on "Philosophus". Complete with a free VIP of "Straight Six", it's another kindly reminder of Gun Audio's current dominance.

Review: With a plethora of artists to choose from, Volume 6 takes a look at the more experimental beings on Hype's roster, to interesting effect. Mob Tactics set the whole show in motion with Elephant Man in a dancehall-inspired club banger cut with insane bass and high-stress sound effects. Total Recall makes an appearance in the Eastern-influenced "Ethnic Origins", taking jump-up to new heights. Playaz favourite Survival adds a trademark neuro touch to fastmoving breaks and eerie atmospherics, and Jaydan show's a sensitive side with the crisp, rolling "She's Heaven". A mature sound from the Playaz crew.

Review: Bursting out of the Innerground catalogue this time is soulful drum and bass star Random Movement, a man so vital to the cause he's worked with S.P.Y and DJ Marky right from the outset of his career, rolling out smooth, jazzy vibes on Liquid V, CIA, Integral, Spearhead and Horizons. Bringing his bright, uplifting take on the genre to first track "Down Somehow", cool vocals drift over sparkling synths and jazzy bass. "Won't Budge" is a deep stepper, contrasting with the usual sunshine layers of R.M's style. Taking a deeper approach, expect to hear this tearing up dancefloors Stateside and across the Atlantic. Another lawless release from one of D&B's continually rising stars.

Review: A various artist album from the Tripswitch camp should come with a health warning as there's serious levels of bassweight in this badboy. Kicking off with Annix - "Soundclash" this one is full of juddering subs and smashing drums. Elsewhere across the album we have some prime cuts from the likes of Critycal Dub - check "Terminator" in all its low-slung allure; Raz with his VIP mix of "Ten Tonne" and Hoogs. A variety of styles and flavours are covered, and Dub Motion's "Obsession" adds a nice dose of calm as we reach the end. Nice stuff.
