Review: An 11-track compilation of modern day funk and disco here from Norway's Walking Disco stable. While Rayko and C Da Afro are both represented, the emphasis generally is on lesser-known names, but there's still plenty of quality on offer. Fingerman conjures the classier, jazzier end of 80s boogie nicely on 'Mind Fonk', while equally convincing are the mid-70s velvet-suited disco vibes of Disco Funk Spinner's 'Fascinating Strike'. Funk Hunk apes classic Moroder on 'After Dark', while label owner Saskin S bookends the collection with two slow-moving funk jams, 'Yes, You Know I'm Right' and 'My Pnoop'. Classy stuff.

Review: The team behind Thunder Jam is dreaming of a "Fantasy Fling". Given that the compilation is an expansive, 21-track affair (sorry), it would be safe to say that they're thinking of a steamy, all-action romance rather than a disappointing one-night stand. Musically, the cuts on offer tend towards the warm and loved-up, with Adata's dreamy deep house opener "Marlena Soul" and the glassy-eyed Balearic disco heat of Aure Zwins' "Long Way" setting the tone. Highlights include the loopy, filter-heavy bounce of Celestino's Lionel Richie-sampling "Rhythm", the twinkling, picturesque nu-disco cheeriness of Double F.O.G's "Bang Bao Boulevard", the synth-heavy boogie revivalism of "Fangkok" by Ivan Fabra and the low-slung dub disco-goes-jazz flex of Noil Rago's "J.Club".

Review: This decidedly epic collection marks Katakana Edits's first foray into the compilation market and is designed as a "best-of" style outing. It boasts 30 reworks, mash-ups, remixes and re-edits gleamed from the prolific imprint's first 50 singles. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

Review: Thunder Jam's latest release is something of a sprawling epic; a 23-track "Invasion" featuring some of the hottest names in the re-edit and nu-disco scenes, alongside contributions from lesser-known talents. There's much to admire throughout, from the low-slung boogie bass and cut glass disco strings of Phil Da Burn's "Wallflower" and the spacey synth-funk of Funk Bank's wiggly "Jamming With The Thunder", to the bouncy disco/New Jersey garage fusion of BOI's "The Gift" and the straightened-out sunshine soul of Dee Bunk's "Little Brown Eye Girl". Throw in solid contributions from Don Dayglo, Belabouche, C Da Afro and Andy Buchan, and you've got a pleasingly varied set of floor-friendly excursions.

Yes U Can
Yes U Can - (5:35) 115 BPM Hot
Inch Of A Prince - (6:47) 110 BPM
Review: Prolific scalpel sort Disco Funk Spinner returns to Midnight Riot with another double dose of tried-and-tested re-edit business. Many diggers will recognize the source material for "Yes U Can", a 1982, P-funk flavoured jam from a roller-boogie great (and his macho accomplice) that the Disco Funk spinner has subtly toughened up and straightened out via the use of organic sounding additional percussion. In contrast, "Inch of a Prince" is a sleazy, seductive, eyes-closed disco smoker full of breathy female vocals, crisp guitar licks, sparkling melody lines and a suitably elastic bassline. Like its predecessor, it's a rock solid edit that should suit all those who like to sprinkle a little eccentric disco magic into their sets.

Truly YoursEXCLUSIVE
Disco Funk Spinner - "Truly Yours" - (6:05) 113 BPM Hot
Goby - "Truly Yours" (dub Touch) - (6:05) 113 BPM
Review: In 2016, Disco Funk Spinner and Goby both released impressive EPs on Thunder Jam. Here, the well-loved edit imprint has asked them to create fresh dancefloor gold out of the same source material, Starpoint's 1983 electrofunk/80s soul jam "It's All Yours". Disco Funk Spinner steps up first, looping up key vocal and instrumental passages from the Starpoint track. These, combined with some subtle new drums, give the re-edit a slightly more house-centric feel while retaining the synth-heavy swing of the '83 original. Goby's 'Dub Touch' is fully in keeping with original '80s electrofunk dubs, featuring as it does a killer mixture of chorus vocals and synth grooves.

On Fire - (6:20) 117 BPM
Review: The honour of curating the 44th instalment of Katakana's Edits series has fallen on Disco Funk Spinner, a much respected re-edit guy whose work has appeared on the likes of Midnight Riot, Disco Fruit and Sound Exhibitions. Here though he only manages to provide two jams, but it's quality, not quantity, right? First up we get "Night Strangers" which takes loops from Candi Staton's Bee Gees cover (Nights On Broadway) and adds an accelerated disco house tempo and subtle but funky embellishments. On the digital flip is "On Fire", a clever rework of Peggy Lee's indestructible classic, Fever. Hot stuff!

Review: In the hustle and bustle of the disco edit scene, the Disco Fruit crew are committed to keeping the spirit of classic '70s sounds alive. The modern elements are pushed to the back as JB Dizzy gets raunchy with the guitar licks, horn sections and some divine vocoder action on "Midnight Power". Mike Woods meanwhile knows just how to treat "Do You Like The Way That It Feels?" by Tempest Trio, keeping the soul of the original party burner alive while beefing up the drums just a touch. Across this 10-track collection the quality remains unflappable in its channeling of true disco principles.

Review: If life teaches you anything it's to expect the unexpected. Here the mighty re-edit label Katakana deliver their 42nd instalment of scapel jobs. However, this time, rather than have a specific producer curate an EP, they've shaken up the formula and delivered a compilation of edits. There's a whopping 24 reworks to enjoy too, many thrills and spills, but our favourites include Morlack's explosive drum-lead MJ cover, "Don't Stop", Mister Vagz' corny 60s mash-up "Love Me Venus" and Dim Zach & Deem's baggy rework of the Happy Monday's sublime "Loose Fit".

Toys Of Joy Part 2
Situation - "Pink & Round" - (8:09) 110 BPM
Bon - "Korova" - (6:09) 115 BPM
Black Magic Disco - "Strike It Back" - (5:59) 122 BPM
Ursula 1000 - "Be The One" - (5:13) 98 BPM
Disco Funk Spinner - "Blind Beat" - (6:17) 117 BPM Hot
Review: While Toys Of Joy might sound like the name of a bumper box of "adult pleasure accessories", it's in fact Midnight Riot's chosen name for the label's occasional series of split artist EPs. This second volume does, though, contain rather a lot of crotch-moistening material. Stroud scalpel fiends Situation Sounds impress with a stretched-out version of a dreamy Balearic rock classic, while Black Magic Disco and Disco Funk Spinner both steal the show with essential disco-rock reworks ("Strike It Back" and "Blind Beat" respectively). For those whose erogenous zones respond better to synthesizers, Ursula 1000's sweet, rubbery and sensual boogie re-rub "Be The One" should get the juices flowing.

Review: Retro scalpel-wielder Disco Funk Pioneer has now released quite a few of his fine spliced and diced disco re-edits on some key labels (Katakana Edits, Sound Exhibitions) but the one he calls home is Disco Fruit. Here he's back where he belongs and he's in top form too! There are five new jams to sink your teeth into, beginning with the appropriately named "Disco Fun", a classic Kool & The Gang-style clap-along. Further highlights include the tough Afro/hip-hop craziness of "Funk Power" and the dreamy arpeggiated disco of sax odyssey, "Revolving Funk".

What's Your Name - (4:49) 100 BPM
Written Letter - (6:38) 103 BPM Hot
Review: Having previously plied his trade on Tonbe's Disco Fruit label, re-editor Disco Funk Spinner transfers to Katakana Edits. Providing the ongoing series' 40th release, the Tel Aviv-based producer delivers a trio of tidy reworks. "Breakfast Jam" is bold and brassy, offering a chunky, hip-wigglin' version of a lesser-celebrated Michael Jackson workout complete with crashing drum breaks, scratching, clipped guitars, bold horns and impassioned, freestyle vocals. "What's Your Name" expertly cuts up David Bowie's "Fame", emphasizing the original's killer disco-funk groove along the way, while standout "Written Letter" extends a sweet soul gem, in the process turning it into a six minute club workout.

Evil Smarty - "This Is" - (6:48) 115 BPM
Gradient Logic - "Juice" - (6:41) 115 BPM
Review: With a new year upon us, Tonbe has decided to gather together another selection of highlights from his dependable Disco Fruit imprint. As you might expect, the ten tracks are all "tried and tested" dancefloor destroyers, most of which effortlessly blur the boundaries between original disco and boogie, and more contemporary, house-centric grooves. Highlights are plentiful, from the sinewy strings and breezy beats of Tonbe's "I Feel Energy" and Deelicious' bustling AOR disco rework "Why Did You Do It", to the rubbery slap-bass and spiraling synthesizers of Evil Smarty's stand-out "This Is". Gradient Logic's "Juice", the most recent release on the collection, is also rather fine.

Review: The Phenomenal EP marks sofa-loving scalpel-jockey DFS's return to the comforting bosom of Tonbe's Disco Fruit label. As usual, he's delivered a tried-and-tested selection of largely familiar dancefloor re-tweaks. "Never Give Up Hope" subtly beefs up Gino Soccio's "Try It Out", while "Disco Dancer" adds a little house shuffle to a familiar, dancing themed disco smasher. He manhandles Randy Mueller and the rest of the New York Skyy crew on "Lot's Of You" [sic], before delving deeper into the crates for inspiration on the standout "Funky Dancer". As for "Full Destruction", it's a twinkling soul head-nodder that sounds like an end of night classic in the making.

Review: Thankfully nothing to do with the large purveyors of overstuffed lazyboy sofas with which he shares his name, DFS is the new re-edit guy in town and the competition better beware! He's rustled up some goodies for this release, choosing fairly obvious source material by means of introduction. "Reach Your Heart" is infectious Earth Wind and Fire-style melodic clap-funk, "Two People" is a muscled up take on the much-sampled "Inside My Love" by Minnie Riperton and "Magic Ways Of Body Movement" is a killer raw '80s electro-funk jam.
