Review: Signal Jam is another of those very consistent and prolific jump-up labels that just generally tends to release some of the naughtiest cuts from that side of the scene around. Distract is on the imprint this time and Nastier features murky tones on all eight cuts, each of them dripping with the type of energy that's made jump-up so popular at the moment. Our favourite is probably 'Nasty VIP', a gargling tune that squelches its way around the range, undercut by a skippy but forceful percussive line. 'Suck Out' is another highlight, a forceful but creative drum section underpinning a wavey amalgamation of bass force. More good work from these guys.
Review: Bristolian up-and-coming drum & bass star Distract has already attracted the attention of many producers in the game after his residency at Bristol's longest-running deep drum & bass night. Taking his beloved deep sound and adding a jump-up edge, this producer's own preferred sounds are hard and heavy. From the nasty electronic noise of "Dark Spirits" to the loved-up old-school joy of "Mutated Beasts", The faux-Brazilian jazz of "Tear You Apart" quickly crumbles into ramped-up dancefloor shaking brutality, while final track "Voices In Your Head" definitely poses itself as the mainstream-botherer. With this guy, the top lads might have a fight on their hands.
Review: Label boss Distract steps up to the plate for this four track EP from Bristol based imprint Signal Jam. As a soundscape 'Nasty' sounds very open, but in-between the spaces and the bouncing back bone, there's a whole lot of distortion and some pretty naughty words. 'Maniac' dancefloor orientated, with lots of high pitched patterns which perfectly mirror the subdued low end. 'Consequences' is our favourite track of the EP, full of gutter scraping-ly dirty energy, the track sounds like an all out assault on your senses, the melody is so violent it almost forces you to throw your head back and forth to the beat. 'Party Don't Stop' has a euro pop, video game vibe making it a little bit cheesy but a whole lot of fun.
