There's a quiet confidence at the heart of this pleasingly varied and attractive EP from Los Angeles-based Floridian Kevin Durante (who is no relation to the similarly named basketball star). He hits the ground running with "Astral Projection", a pulsating, stargazing chunk of Italo-disco/house fusion full of spiraling electronics, arpeggio style synth lines and retro-futurist electronics. The woozy, U.F.O-inspired thrills continue on "Sentinel" (think Kraftwerk's Tour de France Soundtracks blended with Detroit techno attitude), before he tumbles down to earth via the sweeping synth-strings, wide-eyed melody lines, African vocal samples, Balearic flourishes and slick tech-house grooves of "Manitou". Those hankering for even more rush-inducing thrills should check the building beauty of Innervisions style closer, "Pacify".
Los Angeles based DJ/producer Durante is back, following up a terrific run of EPs on his own Openers imprint and appearing now on local label Nice Age with another riveting listen titled "Orca" - this is exactly the kind of deep tech house that floats our boat! With its seething Reese bassline, hypnotic melodies and crisp rhythms it is sure to work any dancefloor. Second offering "Reprieve" picks up the pace on this adrenalised tribal house tool that is perfect to channel into those hypnotic moments later in the evening.
