Lights Go Down EP
Don't Be Serious - (7:52) 116 BPM
Say You Care - (7:42) 112 BPM Hot
Review: Having previously appeared on Sprechen's 'Edgy Future Discotheque' compilation, newcomer Ed Mahon has been given the opportunity to return to the label for a first full EP. He's embraced the opportunity, too, first delivering a moody Depeche Mode-meets-acid-and-dark-disco workout (the excellent 'Lights Go Down'), before wrapping echoing piano motifs and reverb-heavy spoken word snippets around a metronomic electronic disco groove on 'Don't Be Serious'. Arguably best of all though is closing cut 'Say You Care', a gorgeous, sunset-ready combination of Italian dream house piano riffs, bustling bongos and wide-eyed female vocal snippets. It has already received plays at Ibiza institution Café Mambo, so we can safely say that it's definitely Balearic.

Edgy Future Discotheque, Vol 5

Ed Mahon - "Seismic Guitar" (original mix) - (7:35) 114 BPM
Mangetout - "Body Vibrations" (original mix) - (3:57) 111 BPM
Review: What would you expect to hear when you stepped on an "edgy future discotheque"? That's the concept behind one of Sprechen's most popular series of multi-artist EPs, which here reaches its fifth instalment. Rising star Andy Buchan delivers a study start via the grandiose piano house/nu-disco/electro fusion of 'Body Heat', before Flash Atkins lays down a gorgeous fusion of stretched-pit piano solos, lolloping house beats and classy synth-pop sonics on 'Mistpoffer' (a cut that Daco later re-imagines as a throbbing, Patrick Cowley inspired electro-disco throb-job). Elsewhere, Mangetout's 'Body Vibrations' is a lolloping disco-funk shuffler, Jimmy Turnbull's 'Still I Rise' is funky, tech-tinged deep house workout, Ed Mahon's 'Seismic Guitar' is a weirdo electro number par excellence, and Tom2Trax's 'Heatwave Horizon (Lunar Mix)' is a big room house treat.

Sand Grown
Sand Grown - (6:43) 116 BPM
The Space Between - (7:47) 116 BPM
Review: Citizens of Vice's final missive of 2022 comes from Heritage and Ed Mahon, a duo who we last heard from - via a solid set of reworks for Alpaca Edits - two years ago. On title track 'Sand Grown', they give their take on Balearic nu-disco, wrapping smile-inducing piano riffs, Arabic vocal samples and ear-pleasing synth sounds around muscular beats and a pulsating, arpeggio style sequenced bassline. They opt for a cheerier, warmer and more colourful nu-disco sound on the bleeping, glassy-eyed loveliness of 'The Space Between', before hired help Pete Blaker delivers his 'Afrika' remix of 'Sand Grown' - a densely layered, swirling, subtly acid-flecked deep house revision that's impressively immersive, sonically speaking.

Luvin' U - (7:16) 116 BPM
Strawberry Letter 24 - (6:46) 110 BPM
Heritage - "Love Me Baby" - (5:23) 114 BPM Hot
Review: This is the first-ever release from Heritage, a UK DJ/producer with a long track record working on the tech side of the industry. Coming on Pete Le Freq's York-based Alpaca Edits label, his debut finds him teaming up with Ed Mahon, a Blackpool-based house DJ/producer who also co-founded online station Cowbell Radio, to rework three classic disco/funk/boogie cuts from Donald Byrd ('Loving You', 1978), The Brothers Johnson ('Strawberry Letter 23', 1977) and Jean Carn ('My Love Don't Come Easy', 1979). No wheels are getting reinvented here, but all three takes are respectfully done, and chunked-up nicely!

Review: To kick-start a fourth year of disco-fuelled madness, Hot Digits chief Fingerman has put together this sizeable compilation of previously unheard exclusives. As you'd expect, there's far more killers than fillers to be found amongst the 28-track deep selection or re-edits and original productions. Highlights include the clarinet-laden electrofunk-meets-disco bounce of Frank Virgilio's "It's Your Boogie Baby", the disco-goes-hip-hop flex of Tony Disco's delicious "Rolling Paper", the sparkling nu-disco goodness of "When It Comes To Funk" by Stephen Richards, the driving disco-house bump of Ash Reynolds' "Cold Girl" and the fuzzy electrofunk wobble of Don Dayglow's "Many Things". Throw in fine contributions from Chewy Rubs, Le Visiteur, norse man Jarle Brathen and, of course, Fingerman, and you have a must-buy collection of cuts.
