Review: NSB Radio faves Definition celebrate the big five-oh with this bass behemoth, and the world is at once a better place. Oozing filth from familiar faces and a few freshies, this entire collection is seeped in breakbeat beauty. With future-gazing heroics and heritage nods alike, each one of these cuts is a dancefloor blunderbuss. From Eddie Voyager's rusted amen assault "My Way" to Manu Twister's psychedelic shock-out "8-Bits", this bangs and twangs with all the best attributes that shaped breakbeat in the first place while looking firmly forward. Here's to another 50 releases.
Review: In the past, Eddie Niguel has shared releases with Basic Soul Unit on the Midnight Shift label, but on this occasion, he pairs up with a new partner. Dachshund is the founder of the Clapper imprint and approaches house music from a different perspective. Versed in the same aesthetic as his con-temporaries Quenum and Mountain People, the Swiss producer's "Must Say" is a rolling, hypnotic groove, peppered with a repetitive vocal loop and haunting chord builds. By contrast, Niguel's "Who Made Who" is a more reflective affair, with melancholic synths building against the backdrop of a mid-tempo groove that builds gently and with great subtlety.
Review: Valique is currently neck and neck with Rayko in a furious battle for the title of disco's most prolific re-editor. Here he nudges in front by a nose thanks to another six-track selection of dancefloor-ready reworks. As usual, he adds his magic touch to a range of well loved and lesser-known cuts, kicking off with an undulating, party-hearty extension of David Bowie's "Fame". Stylistically, he keeps things eclectic, variously touching on hazy disco-funk ("Turn That Boogie Loose"), camp disco (the string-drenched, arms-aloft "Going Up"), white boy reggae-pop (a cheery, stretched out rendition of 10CC's "Dreadlock Holiday"), and heavily percussive disco-rock (the subtly house-friendly, filter-rich "You Gave Me Love").
