Review: In what must be one of the most surprising collaborations of 2024, Detroit techno legend Rolando teams up with the fast-rising Elisa Bee. The title track is an intense affair. Based on dense drums and frenetic break beats, it teems with intense acid lines. On "Inner Tunnel", the sound is more stripped back. Tribal drums, tight percussion and a gradual building tone are all hallmarks of Rolando's signature style. Rounding off the release is "Superposition". While it is more frenetic than the other tracks, it is also deeper. Against the backdrop of a linear, snaking groove and rasping hi hats, atmospheric synths swirl seductively.

Review: The fifth split release on Outerworld sees label regulars Elisa Bee and Jamal Dixon joined by newcomers Carlton Doom and Confidential Recipe. Doom's "Voyager" is an irresistible break beat-led workout featuring mysterious synths looped over robust drums. In contrast, Confidential Recipe goes down a stripped back techno route for the tough analogue rhythm and looped vocal snipper of "Mirror". On "When It Rolls", Elisa Bee ups the pace, dropping a tough tribal groove that is peppered with rave stabs and redolent of classic Hardgroove. Jamal Dixon, another Outerworld regular, rounds off the release with something very different - the acid-heavy groove of "Chisholm".

Review: Elisa Bee follows last year's Send Me A Vision on Hardgroove with another peak-time EP. The title track features insistent chords building against the backdrop of a rolling groove. "Jam Thing" is based on a similar approach, but it sees the fast-rising producer fuse foreboding synth stabs with dense drums. "Boiling Point" is more pared back with Bee using the track's looped groove as the backdrop for a soulful vocal. On "Dawn Time", there is a heightened sense of drama, thanks to the use of moody chord builds. "The Answer" rounds off the release in style with a loose, looped groove, hypnotic chants and an unforgettable vocal sample.

Review: Outerworld drops a third release that comprises remixes of tracks from the first two volumes. Remixed by Black Girl White Girl, Ackermann's "After All This Time" is a jacking, angular affair, resounding to the kind of twitchy rhythm that Cristian Vogel pioneered. In stark contrast is Rolando's take on Elisa Bee's "Travel To Light", where the Detroit legend delivers a deep, rolling interpretation. Shifting gears and style, Noncompliant's interpretation of Moodtrax's "Network" is led by insistent claps and a slamming groove. However, the devil is in the detail here and the rework really stands out thanks to a lurching bass and wild analogue riffs. Rounding off this fine EP is the Disruptive Pattern Material take on "Calis N New Yorkers", which resounds to a menacing low end.

Review: While her catalogue is just a few releases strong, Elisa Bee has already released on key labels like Truncate and Hardgroove. Fluid Funk reinforces her reputation as a purveyor hard-edged but distinctive club tracks. The title track is based on firing percussion and concrete weight kicks, while "Yes Yes" sees her integrate high pitched stabs with a jacking ghetto rhythm. "Pins and Needles" is even more intense. It sees the Italian producer draw on vintage Robert Armani and Mike Dearborn for inspiration, dropping gained drums, rolling snares and a mayhem-inducing looped riff. "Forever Seeking" also features insistent claps and steely kicks - on this occasion, they are combined with dense filters for maximum impact.

Review: Working under their vowel-free side project, veteran duo Hardfloor kick-starts this acid-focused split release. "The Unknown Mailman" is a classic slice of 303 drama, with acid lines peaking and ebbing continuously. Acidulant goes down a similar route on the rolling snares of "Reposition", while Mark Archer explores a different approach on "Flangacid". With a focus on a darker sound, he drops tortured tweaks over a steely rhythm. The release also features two deviations from this approach. Elisa Bee's "Full Time Dreamers" weaves acid into a break beat fuelled hardcore track. At the other end of the spectrum, Mutex drops the deep techno of "Jack4Acid".

Review: Brussels' Stephane Allemand AKA Lefto Early Bird is best known for his wide-ranging radio show - think of him as Belgium's answer to Gilles Peterson, if you will - and here he serves up a 19-track collection that takes a similarly eclectic approach. After Ain't About Me's powerful opener, a haunting spoken word piece about living through 9/11, you get sultry disco/boogie from Patience Africa, acid house from Shlundee, Middle Eastern-flavoured jazz from Alemayehu Eshete, frenzied footwork from DJ Spinn and stripped-back rave/hardcore from Elisa Bea, all interspersed with multiple despatches from the more experimental end of the broken beat spectrum. Approach with open mind and open ears!

"Offline Matters" resounds to crispy drums and features the kind of insistent, ghostly organ riff that you'd expect to hear in a Robert Hood production, while on "Send Me A Vision", Bee ups the tempo and delivers a skipping rhythm and insistent stabs. In contrast, "Tell Me More" sees the fast-rising techno producer go down a pared back route, with a focus on rasping percussion and roughly hewn kicks. Rounding off this fine release is the frenetic "Headspinner", where insistent thunderclaps are combined with discordant riffs for a heady finale.

Review: Ben Sims builds on the first Synchronicity instalment with another compelling collection of emerging techno producers. Kerrie and Szmer's contributions both draw on minimal techno for inspiration, with the former following an acid-laced path and the latter incorporating repetitive bleeps and haunting synths into the arrangement. The compilation takes a Detroit turn on Insolate's "Night Love" - a blurry, jittery slice of techno with shades of Juan Atkins and Terrence Dixon. Meanwhile, a deeper but still dance floor sound is audible on Private Press' "Wiadomo Driven", where bleeps and tones fly off the rigid rhythm at random. Reflecting Sims' own tough but diverse DJ sound, Synchronicity also throws out some curve balls, like the dubbed out "Rectifier Direct" from A Thousand Details.
