Review: The eighth instalment of Cocoon's Dots And Pearls compilation series starts on a light note. JOSS' "Assessing" is a melodic techno track powered by cascading snares and swirling pads. In a similar style is Emanuel Satie's "When I First Met You (I Knew You Were The One)", where angelic voices and soaring strings make for an uplifting track. There's an edgier sensibility on Denis Horvat & Skarn's chugging "Triii", reflected also on Aocram & Ramsey Neville's acid-led "Brooklyn Structure".
The mood continues to darken with the EBM influences of Alex Bau's grinding "Antidot", while the ever-reliable Redshape resurfaces with the pulsating "Ghost Story". But it's only a temporary situation and Harald Bjork's "Aluco" rounds off the release with an ominous tranced-out track.

Review: Last time we heard from Emmanuel Satie back in January, he was delivering an epic slab of muscular, percussion-rich peak-time house on Moon Harbour ('One Love'). 'Personal Liberation', the title track from the former Get Physical regular's first Crosstown Rebels outing, is similarly weighty and drum-heavy, with guest vocalist Naghiti speaking echo-laden words over gargantuan sub-bass, dark string sounds, moody chords and a bouncy, percussion-rich Afro-house beat. Elsewhere, 'The Keys To Jupiter' is a more melancholic and bittersweet affair, with mournful piano motifs rising above a more shuffling (but no less rubbery) tech-house beat, while 'Somewhere Else In Time' cheerily joins the dots between classic electro, Inner City's 'Good Life' and symphonic deep house.

Review: It's hard to believe that Cocoon is celebrating its 20th anniversary, but what's not difficult to grasp is that Sven Vath's imprint is marking the occasion in style. Rampa and Emanuel Satie kick-start this compilation with emotive, tranced out tracks - in particular Rampa's "2000" is particularly poignant - while Cocoon mainstays like Gregor Tresher and Ricardo Tobar up the pace with the musical but clubby techno of "Nostalgia (Is The Enemy)" and "El Eterna" respectively. As always, Cocoon strikes a flawless balance between showcasing local producers and international names; 20 Years is no exception and features frazzled acid from Josh Wink as well as steely percussive bangers courtesy of Planetary Assault Systems and Jacek Sienkiewicz.

Review: Label regular Emanuel Satie returns to Crosstown Rebels with an EP featuring two quite contrasting melodic housers. 'Rivers' is a driving, heads-down kinda cut with energy to spare, and is based around a hypnotic rhythm that borders on the tribal, on top of which are layered subtly head-frying synths and snatches of chant-like female vocal. The accompanying 'Tokyo ASMR' is more contemplative, drifty affair with Middle Eastern-sounding strings, more strange cut-up female vocal snippets and a hazy, druggy atmosphere overall. If modular synth chords alone don't cut it for you, this is the melodic house you're looking for!

Review: It's been twenty years since Sven Vath's Cocoon operation set up in Ibiza; since then the label's annual alphabet-themed compilations have also come to define techno's stylistic twists and turns. According to S, 2019 clearly saw the re-emergence of trance in its various forms, from Love Over Entropy's wide-eyed abandon to Stimming's more musical approach - audible on "The Gift That Never Stops To Give". Musicality is also a common theme on the house and techno that features on Compilation S, with Emanuel Satie's "Planet XXX" resounding to melodic chord stabs and Giegling artist Edward's "End Days" favouring chattering samples and a soaring bass - inspired by E-Dancer with a modern, Teutonic twist.

Review: Former Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical Music and DFTD artist Emanuel Satie has built up a quietly impressive discography since making his recording debut in 2011. Here he continues to impress via what we believe to be his first outing on Knee Deep In Sound. There's much to enjoy about lead cut "Queens", an excitable peak-time romp rich in heavy analogue bass, bubbly TB-303 style acid lines, breathy vocal samples, sweaty drums and mind-altering electronic motifs. In comparison, virtual flipside "For The Broken Hearted" is an altogether breezier and more sun-kissed affair, with guest pianist Juno Rhodes bashing out mazy, life-affirming solos (think "Strings of Life") over another chunky, acid-fired deep house groove.
