Review: 2020 was a particularly difficult year for electronic music, with clubs worldwide shuttered, but as the latest compilation from ARTS demonstrates, the techno community has no shortage of creative energy. This ingenuity and creativity is audible in all areas, with Rave Culture platforming new and established artists. MRD and Alfredo Mazzilli both deliver pulsating electronic bangers, while Raar's "Collider" is a moody break beat affair. At the other end of the spectrum, label owner Emmanuel's "Camouflage" is a rave-influenced peak-time roller and I Hate Models drops the stomping but atmospheric "Intergalactic Emotional Breakdown", while other established names, Benjamin Damage and ASC, deliver forceful, musical workouts.

Review: Arts label owner Emmanuel teams up with veteran producer Dustin Zahn for this resolutely underground EP. Emmanuel's "Bethide" starts the release in tough mode, with gritty kicks and dense, clicking percussion providing a funky but utilitarian sound. On "Visible Invisible", he veers into a deeper but gloomy direction, as bleak synths unfold over a pumping rhythm. It's a marvellously moody affair. This split release also finds Zahn in uncompromising form; the tribal "Submit Yourself" unfolds to belching acid lines and looped vocal snatches, while on "Eternity's Edge", he lets broken beats and rolling filters provide the basis for dreamy but dark chords.

Review: It's fair to say that this release has been a labour of love. Five years in the making, label owner Emmanuel has chosen a collection of tracks from his dream team of techno producers. This means that ASC's breathy ambience "Stasis" sits beside deep, at times acid -soaked pulsing rhythms from Boston 168, Unbalance and Forward Strategy Group as well as peak-time rollers from emerging artists like Cleric and industrial bangers courtesy of scene veterans like Dustin Zahn. While the inclusion of producers such as Subjected and the fast rising I Hate Models is sure to put increased focus on this compilation, its real, lasting value are the more cerebral contributions such as Emmanuel's own "Bridge of Quietness".

Review: Glenn Wilson's long-standing hard techno label casts its gaze back to assess some of last year's highlights. Labelling Planet Rhythm as merely an outlet for heads-down tracks is somewhat misleading, and as this compilation shows, some of its best material comes from left of centre. Robert S' "Matos" is a chord-heavy groove with enough attitude to ensure it doesn't sound bland, while Samuli Kemppi drops one of his trademark bleep techno bombs on "Ant On A Rubber Rope". For those who like it harder, there's Giorgio Gigli & Ness' tunnelling "Resin" and Yan Cook's resonating "Shift", but the highlight is Mr G's "Binky's Groove", a loopy house number with the kind of tough beats and insistent vocal sampling that makes Colin McBean unique.

Review: How do you make banging techno sound interesting? If you're Greek producer Emmanuel, then you take a leaf from late 90s house music to turn the drummy, clap-heavy techno of "Profile" into a filtered affair. Like DJ Sneak or Daft Punk beefed up on steroids, "Profile" is subjected to more panning than the average river in the Wild West during the gold rush. Abstract Division also takes an unexpected approach on "Inducement", lacing his percussive track with frequency-shifting bleeps. However, if you're in search of some good old-fashioned banging techno, don't fear because that's also available here courtesy of contributions from VSK and Re: Axis & Scalameriya.

Review: Glenn Wilson's long-running label drops a diverse four-tracker. DJ Boss is up first with "Judit". Using rickety broken beats and a powerful bass as his backing, he mixes dubby chords and dramatic stabs to create an offbeat but alluring sound. By contrast, D.Carbone's "Allubus" is more direct, but its slamming sound is full of subtleties, from chiming bells to slinky, rattling percussion. There is no such ambiguity on Emmanuel's "Knowledge", where stomping beats and ice cold synths make for an effective peak time workout. However, Ness' "Hypnopaedia" quickly steers the release back to more ethereal territory, with a pulsing groove and spacey synths prevailing.
