Review: Danny Tenaglia is a stone cold legend, but his profile has waned significantly over recent years. Given that it's 25 years since the release of his first production, this first contribution to the Balance series - is well timed. Pleasingly, it seems Tengalia still "has it it". Throughout the collection, the veteran NYC DJ maintains a fearsome energy level, mixing things up via a track list that spans chunky tech-house, darkroom tribal, heavily percussive fare (see Michel Cleis' dub of Basement Jaxx's "Mermaid of Salinas") and intelligent techno revivalism (Dax J's brilliant "Dreamscape" and Ho's "Deletion 3"). It is, of course, an impeccable selection, as you'd expect from a man with Tengalia's undoubted pedigree.

Review: Label founder Alexey Gordiyenko delivers a release that at times delves into the esoteric take on techno. "Farewell" is a widescreen ambient soundtrack, while the equally cinematic "Departure" and "Plectron 2" are based on rhythm tracks that alternate between clicky minimalism and Detroit-style 808s. However, there is also a darker side to Exploit's sound and this finds its expression on "Utopia", a percussive techno affair full of 303 licks and "Zero Gravity", where jagged percussive shards and pounding beats create a truly menacing vibe. Despite this, Exploit's standout work is based on esoteric sounds, most notably the tripped out synths of "Diving into Wormhole."

Review: If you're looking for deep but hard-hitting techno, then you've come to the right place. Like Fanon Flowers, Mutex label owner Alexey Gordiyenko manages to strike a near perfect balance between musical depth and dance floor functionality. On "Chordism", this takes the form of heavy metallic drums that pummel away as they support expansive chord progressions, while on "Neuromantic", the arrangement is more rolling and percussive and the melodies more trance-like. "Late Nite Groove" sees Gordiyenko mess with his formula slightly. To begin with, the rhythm is more jittery and off-beat, but soon enough it morphs into a firing, driving rhythm featuring a menacing bassline.
