Review: Almost one year ago exactly, 'international funk barons', Beatnik City introduced us to their first selection of sensitively retouched northern souls gems on the first volume of this occasional series. Now having fully ingested all the goodness contain therein, we're ready for the next helping. There are ten new wonders to get lost in here. Highlights include hearing The Spinners' timeless melodies given a light and breezy Latin makeover on "Disco Shame", BadboE's smokin' breaks rework of a Velvelettes classic on "Breaking Down Motown" and finally Leygo's percussion-lead stomper, "Feels Good".
Review: The Danish may be all serious about design, but when it comes to partying the Breakbeat Paradise crew prove that they can be as frivolous as the rest of us. Here they've rustled up a bumper packed collection of cheeky if disposable mash-ups and edits of the kind that'll go down a storm in bars and house parties. There are six offerings some highlights of which include the squelchy retro funk breaks of "Walk In Place" by F-Block, the cut-up go-go boogie of "Free Wheelin Franklin" by Kibosh and the raw big beat swing hybrid "Hit Em Hard" by Blitzkrieger.
Review: Cardiff-based bass herbert F-Block follows up his recent slew of success on labels such as Dirty Dubster and Tru Funk with another trio of instant party-rippers. "Back Up" starts off all deep and jazzed but gets wilder and wilder as the dynamic develops. "Turnitup!" takes a well-known Public Enemy vocal and plasters it over a sturdy, slo-mo swagger riddim with added p-funk nuances. Finally "Wind Or Grind" takes Prince Buster for a waltz in D&B town. Instant floor-skankage guaranteed.
Review: The Dirty Dubster crew return with a bumper seventh volume of their ragga party jams, and true to form, they mash up ragga with other contemporary styles with considerable style. F-Block's "Jah Bone" combines all manner of echo-laden dub guitar with filthy dubstep bass, while Wood N Soo's "Smoke 2 Joints" is a contemporary update on The Toyes' classic, filling it with rolling snares and powerful low end. Subtifuge's "Love 4 U" is a slightly more skanking effort, with rolling D&B rhythms completely at odds with its laid back mood, while DJ Tzinas' "Wicked" combines a horn sectiona and tropical acoustic guitar with some serious dub airhorn - big stuff all round!
Review: What in fresh hell is going on at Tru Funk Towers? Barely six weeks have passed since they gave us the 10-track strong Volume 1 and already we're looking down the barrel of eight more serious funk nuggets! Featuring some of the label's favourite faces we see the likes of mainstay Chudy rub shoulders with DJ Kid Stretch with party-starting glee. The former causes spine-tingle meltdown with his Aeroplane level of synth lushness on "See You Soon" while the latter gets jiggy with a classic Deborah Cox vocal and some full strength bass riffage. That's just two of eight; do you need any more convincing?
