Review: Laurent Garnier, Scan X, and Oliver Way's COD3 QR label remains fresh as ever with a new various artist release that brings eleven hand picked cuts from the likes of Bel Air Ltd., Tal Fussman and Jules Wells to Alex Troniq, Fanu, Voltaire, Carlos Nilmmns and Inner Ray! Lead cut "City Lights" kicks off with some deep and melancholic bassline house next to some moody techno reminiscent of early Ben Klock in "10247". "The Clap" delivers some footwork inspirations next to some spookier electro wares in "Neophile" - banging. "Pisecean" gets all breakbeat and new age in the mix alongside some warehouse techno in "Regular Disturbances" alongside some melodic 'Mathew Johnson' inspired sounds in "Old Paris". Closing out the EP is "What" - a British Murder Boys-esque slice of Middle Eastern themed gothic EBM.

Review: Finland representing! Renowned and highly respected breakbeat craftsman Fanu returns to Metalheadz with five deliciously headsy cuts. 'Headgames' eases us in slowly with mystical chords and a mid-tempo energy before the Lightless Recordings bossman hurls us into the heavy stuff with cuts such as the savage (and brilliantly titled) 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Pain', the rolling jungle feels of 'I'll Be In The Shadows' and the brutalist 'Bliss-Torture'. Last but definitely not least 'No Horizon' brings us home on massive drum funk vibe. Pure percussion precision; no one weaves dark magic like Fanu!

Review: After a hiatus of two years, Kellam Matthews has decided to reignite his Frendzone label via a multi-artist EP packed to the rafters with retro-futurist dancefloor treats. Ames Henry and Paul Kav get things going in stellar fashion with "Business in Hasenhide", an urgent fusion of two-step drums, thrusting acid bass and jumpy synth stabs, before Ames goes solo via the breezy bounce of "Tribute". Fania successfully roughs things up via the mutant sub-bass, dystopian noises and distorted breakbeats of "Dubia", while Octo Octa offers up a wonderfully spooky and hectic jungle roller that's guaranteed to set pulses racing out on the dancefloor.

Review: Labels in D&B don't get much more prestigious than Metalheadz Platinum and the most prized iteration of Goldie's genre-defining imprint has seen some of the most well-known releases of all time pass through its doors. This time around's the turn of Fanu to contribute to this history and he's certainly done it in style, namely a four-tracker full of breaks and basses that smacks of the glory days. 'Recharge' is twisting and serpentine; 'Black Label' rough and unforgiving; 'Baretta' atmospheric and pounding; 'Prototype' clean and driving. If you're into the old-school Metalheadz sound you'll find it difficult not to love this release, just as we are.
