Review: The latest release on Sonntag Morgen shows that while the world has become smaller, geographical location is still important. Xavi is from Belgrade, and while "Explanation Skip" is laden down with the kind of cold, Sahko/Sandwell District-esque bleeps that have become a staple part of modern techno sound design, the tough, slamming beats and loopy approach are rooted in the late 90s productions of Balkan artists like Umek, Valentino Kanzyani and Marko Nastic. By contrast, the Dasha Rush remix resounds to a more contemporary form of hypnotism, namely the lean functionality of Berghain. Xavi continues his unusual flirtation with techno on "Saturn Transit", where eerie chord washes and rough beats make for a refreshingly different alternative to the current narrative.

Review: It's true that bad news sells, but how does this apply to techno music? On the evidence of Predictions, there should be an audience for the more visceral end of the form. Filip Xavi's "Arcade Psycho" is a grinding, banging affair, its jarring riffs and firing percussion leading the arrangement to a thrilling finale. Mattias Fridell's "Universal Domain Analysis" is cut from a similar cloth, with the added bonus of eerie interference in the background. Despite this, the highlight is Rory St John's "Sadbat". Less intense than the other tracks, its linear, metallic rhythm is infused with acid blips and a muffled female vocal that guarantees it is the most disturbing of them all.

Review: Paul Boex's label deserves kudos for showcasing work by upcoming techno producers. At one end of the spectrum is Dynamo's "Retaliation", a spaced out affair, its resonating pulses throwing ghostly shapes over the bleep techno landscape. Chemie favours a clubber approach to this sound, as evidenced by the insistent subsonic blips, firing hats and repetitive tones of "Sub Atomic Collisions". On the other end, in the corner marked 'intense techno' is Never Existed Boy's "Mechanical 57", where thick acid provides the basis for claustrophobic hats. Best of all though is Fillip Xavi's "Planet Distance". Fusing the atmospheric textures and warm bleeps of Dynamo's track with stomping but somewhat loose beats, it sounds like techno for the next generation.
