Review: It's that thyme again! Filthy Habits are off to Tescos and heading straight for the condiment aisle for a little spice and seasoning. First up is 'Herb Deal', a bouncy bubbler that nods at the mid 2000s dancefloor sound and stinks of oregano. Elsewhere the tarragon-tinged 'Right Here' gets all switchy with its tear-out drops and bleepy flips while the swaggering Hazardian 'Brain Functions' will batter you will until you swear everything smells like dill. Deeper into the spice rack we reach for 'Disconnected' and shake our hips to the rattling rosemary scented loose limbed breaks while 'The White Feather' is a much colder, almost electro-informed stepper. It also reeks of parsley.

Review: The Good 4 Nothing crew are back inside, kicking off 2024 in the best way possible as they unveil this explosive new compilation series, exploring some of the most raucous arenas of dark drum & bass. Featuring a fiery 13 original creations, we see a highly skilled collection of soundsmiths join the cause, with the likes of Foe, Decrypt, DJ Twista, Filthy Habits, and more landing with some sizzling original fire. From the moody synth dives of Lundy's 'The Curse' and the system-curling sub-work of 'Get You' from Hijacker, we can see very quickly this whole compilation is armed and ready for combat. Our initial standouts would have to include the wonky LFO slides of Breakout's 'Fine Idea', next to the mind-melting unpredictability of Error & GinX's 'Smoked'. A must-have for any DJ preparing for a ruckus.

Review: Gradient maintain their benchmark-setting pace, energy and creativity with the latest instalment of their 'Momentum' collection featuring an all-star cast of family members and founders. The message is clear from the off as Filthy Habits 'Street Scum' gets slappy with its energy and technoid aesthetic and L3MMY DUBZ adds to the intensity and fever with the totally twisted 'Punch Line'. Review: Time for some fondant murk-ups as Filthy Habits unleash the long-awaited VIPs of their 2020 Sweet Tooth release 'Mr Kipling / Keep It Real'. The cakey 'Mr Kipling VIP' is every bit as tasty as it sounds as more variation is woven into the bassline creating some cool subversion to all those familiar with the original. Mean while on 'Keep It Real VIP' retains that classic horn sample but completely flips the bassline into a whole other level of screwface science. Exceedingly good!

Complementing each other's sounds perfectly, 'Consequences' lands first with its addictive rolling percussion and twisted riff before 'Elements' sweeps in with an even aggier and persistent feel. Review: Low Down Deep is a platform from some of the best aimed at showing off some of the baddest jump up and heavier sounds floating around at the moment. This full length album is a rare occurrence for the label, and from label regular Filthy Habits it, is exactly what we want and is name Kaleidoscope presumably because it offers up a dizzying range of dancefloor friendly stuff. The first track is a steppy, stripped back and choppy piece of work that vibrates and ricochets all the way down the range, a process repeated until it's drilled into your skull. There are no features here, it's all Filthy Habits, and tracks like 'Delirious', 'Mortality' and 'Night Terrors' all show a commitment to tough sonics that makes this album so damn good. Unstoppable.

Review: Woi to the oi, Filthy Habits return to Heist's Calypso Muzak with three of bubbliest bubblers you've seen this side of the annual bubbler awards. 'Life Choices' kicks off with an exceptional late 90s Bristol twang, complete with big strings and a rising Size-style bassline. 'First Strike' has more of an electrified hum to it. Think early Hazard with its hornets nest bassline and swinging breaks that sit right back in the mix. Then there's the grumpy finale 'Mirage'. Again hitting with a late 90s vibe but just a hint more tech to the mix, it's another reminder of how timeless Filthy Habits' productions are. Strike it lucky.

Review: Low Down Deep have really outdone themselves with this one and it's courtesy of Filthy Habits, who, across four tunes, seriously rolls things out. The standout tune is 'Caught Sippin', which moves from a choppy array of jump up stabs into a winding, twisting bass node with a devilish bend within, a powerful dancefloor track that you won't forget any time soon. The title track smacks of old school Low Down Deep material with its shameless approach to funky rhythms and bouncy beat making, a catchy affair that doesn't take itself too seriously. The others are equally stripped back, and we really love the barebones approach being taken here.

Review: Hi Def are one of the most prolific jump-up labels around. We regularly feature their releases and they almost always smash it out of the park, this time being no different. Access All Areas is a fiery EP, featuring Ego Trippin, Filthy Habits and more, that epitomizes the type of jump-up, but also slightly different flavours as well, that, in more ways than one, has defined D&B over the past couple of years - no-nonsense, uncompromising and proudly nonchalant about what you think. It's just pure attitude, dancefloor-based music at its best and music that simply does what it wants, there's no pretentiousness or image-orientated concerns - it's just D&B. Big, big tunes.

Review: Biological Beats have a bit of a reputation for spewing out some of the most venomous beats in the business and their talent for pushing some of the best artists on the jump-up spectrum is undeniable. Filthy Habits & Jeopardize are holding up that standard and they're doing it in style, something clear right from the start of this EP. 'Jiggy Jiggy reels you in with a lovely intro, its beginnings quickly regressing to a siren-like collection of stabs which exude pure energy in a way that's reminiscent of Kings of the Rollers and insanity more generally. The rest of the release is equally aggressive, 'The Venom' being another highlight with its gargled expressions of bouncing force. Sick release.

Review: Filthy Habits has been on a bit of a spree recently, with a slew of releases on labels like G13 and others. This time though he's on arguably the best dedicated jump-up label in the scene - Low Down Deep - and here's here with a wicked slew of pointed, angry tracks. The B-side 'Talk Too Much' is the standout tune, with a ragga jungle introduction that's flipped into a biting, jungle number that grates and grinds in all the right places. Absolutely wicked tune this and it's complimented by an almost equally cool A-side - definitely check this single out.

Review: G13 are turning ten years old and, like any good anniversary, it's being celebrated with a proper knees-up, hands-in-the-air type compilation of jump-up heavy hitters from a slew of slightly lesser-known artists. This is the second part of that celebration and, following on from an excellent first instalment, the crew are back with even more. Rowney and Filthy Habits make a return, whilst Smoggy and more make a feature as well. Rowney ropes in MC Haribo for a screamer with 'Devastating', Lyfie takes things heavy on 'Mentality' and Slipz drags proceedings into a bouncier place with 'Drop Tight'. All round, an excellent showing from the G13 crew.

Review: Over the years the Midlands duo, Filthy Habits have built a strong and steady following, predominantly revered for their exciting DJ sets the lads promotions are seeing some love on the floor too and this EP shows why This is some shoe throwing shiz right here. 'Abandoned' is as high octane as they come, packed with jump up signatures it's fast and fun. What more do you want? 'The Calling' is another floor destroyer which slots into the noisy jump up box, with its disgustingly low sub and its dog capturing high hook. It also has so creepy critter like samples that we're more used to hearing in dark dubstep, which brings an interesting twist to the track.

Review: Murderation: Filthy Habits have been pushing out high grade drum & bass for some years now, but this is a whole new level. Highlights include the way "Artificial Intelligence" subverts everything you know about drops with its rising, paranoid riff; the way "1.17AM" creates the sensation of driving 100mph down the wrong side of the motorway; the way "Retaliation" buzzes and jitters like a digital bees nest on fire and the way that sudden extra jungle fill on "Yeah" well and truly knocks you off your feet each and every time. Review: Milton Keynes High R8 Digital are back with more dark side drum and bass shenanigans courtesy of their most recent recruits. Starting out with Hoogs' "The Comet (Majistrate remix)" which is reminiscent of classic Andy C or DJ Zinc from the early noughties, there's honourable mentions also to Sub Killaz with their stripped back and absolutely sketchy offering "Horror (Nu Elementz remix)" and of course Filthy Habits' "Hidden Secrets (Upgrade remix)" which is a seriously wonky journey through the dark side of breakbeat science. His remix up next of Dub Berzerka's "Born Bad" likewise demonstrates that this fella certainly 'ain't messing around!

Review: Random Concept calling an EP "Floor Fillers" is like Mr Kipling naming his new range of cakes as 'tasty'... We can't think of a release on the label that hasn't filled the floor! Stating the obvious is just one of the label's strengths, they can also put together a serious all star cast, as proved right here: Jayline's "Tommy Knocker" flexes with a vocal power that's reminiscent of DJ SS and Warren G's work together, Filthy Habits continue to dominate with a powerful jump-up ripper while Saxxon does a really trippy trick as a jazzy riff comes out of a radio tuning sample before leaping into a demonstratively dark bass riff. Elsewhere we find bong-busting Blackley doing the funky triplet thing on "Botanical", Modified Motion add a little bounce to the collection with a blend that's highly reminiscent of Moving Fusion back in the day while RV and Garry K close the show with an eerie stepper, all stretched out hollow bass and cheek-splintering snares.
