Review: Glitterbox regular Alan Dixon brings us his take on five Salsoul classics, but rest assured these are no shoddy "whack a 4/4 kick under it" bootlegs - Dixon was given full access to the original multi-tracks for this project. Even so, it's a brave man or woman indeed who looks at the Salsoul catalogue and thinks "I could improve on that," so he's wisely avoided doing anything too radical or adding any extraneous elements of his own, instead simply teasing out the tracks' most familiar hooks and giving them a structural make-over, rendering them easier to programme in contemporary house and disco sets. Classy stuff.
Rafael Cameron - "Boogie's Gonna Get Ya" (The Reflex Revision) - (7:51) 120 BPM
Loleatta Holloway - "We're Getting Stronger (The Longer We Stay Together) [Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper Remix] [DJ Mem? Edit]" (The Longer We Stay Together - Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper remix - DJ Meme edit) - (6:46) 126 BPM
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Sun After Rain" (Tom Moulton 12" mix - 2017 Remaster) - (8:07) 120 BPM
Charo - "Hot Love Vs Stay With Me" (Dimitri From Paris vs Monsieur D Hot Breaks Re-Cut - 2017 Remaster) - (5:53) 125 BPM
Vaughan Mason & Butch Dayo - "Party On The Corner" (Shep Pettibone mix - 2017 Remaster) - (6:51) 112 BPM
Review: With 30 tracks to choose, there's no faulting the value for money on offer with this latest Salsoul collection, but a note of caution should perhaps be sounded: if you've only just discovered Salsoul and are doing some exploring, then this isn't the best collection to start with, because most of the label's best-loved tunes already featured on Volume 1, back in 2017. That potential commercial weakness is also, however, the album's greatest strength, because it's the more obscure cuts that will be of most interest to long-term fans... and there are plenty of both! With a mixture of ACTUAL original mixes plus a few contemporary rerubs from the likes of Dave Lee and Danny Krivit, this is a worthwhile and rewarding addition to the ever-growing roster of Salsoul comps.
Review: Legendary Australian DJ Cam Bianchetti, these days known as Late Night Tuff Guy (aka HMC) is said to be 'honoured' to appear on the esteemed Salsoul Records with three killer edits of classics from their back catalogue. LNTG respectfully handles and edits them with care. Featuring First Choice's anthems "Doctor Love" (Late Nite Tuff Guy Hypnotizin' Groove) and "Love Having You Around" (Late Nite Tuff Guy rework). This is followed by Double Exposure's "Everyman" which gets respliced and stretched to perfection once again, plus featuring those epic filter sweeps throughout for added dancefloor drama. Beautifully mastered, these edits appeared courtesy of 2018's Record Store Day and is certainly one for the disco heads right here!
