Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

Review: Well well well... What a way to kick off a new year: Modified Sonics sees the entire Critical troop go to town on each other's work and celebrate the label's 15+ year contribution to the game. No stone unturned, no shoe unthrown; from long-demanded VIPs such as Emperor's sharp update on "Infrasound" and Mefjus's VIP of "Disrupted" come well-deserved re-ups of classics such as Binga's fuzzy take on Serum & Bladerunner's "Who Jah Bless", Benny L's gut-troubling twist of Enei's "Mosquito" and a crucial twist of Rockwell's breakthrough gamechanger "Underpass" from none other than Perez. With loads more dopeness from the likes of QZB, Hyroglifics, Klax and many more, this is one of the best V/A albums Critical have ever put together. Essential.

Review: One of the scene's most reliable beatmakers Foreign Concept returns to Critical Music with his most accomplished work yet. The Make Meals EP is, by his own account, a fresh approach to D&B, featuring explorations into more diverse and dynamic sounds. It's truly fantastic to hear someone who was a promising new artist take the huge strides necessary to become a voice to be reckoned with. Taking huge chunks of influence from hip hop in "Make Meals" and the darker side of electronica for tracks like the sublimely skewed "Ask Yourself", it's a real insight into Foreign Concept's creative world. You can hear what makes him tick in here; you can also hear that each track has had a real focus. He's not just into making heads nod now, he's got purpose.

Review: The Tag Team EP represents a killer return to Critical for South Coast producer Foreign Concept who really showcases the depths of his productions skills across the four tracks. As you'd expect from the EP title, this release is all about Foreign Concept flexing his collaborative muscles and he doesn't put a step wrong. Naturally there's some hi rolling drum and bass with the T Man featuring lead track and "Bang It" featuring Stray both premium grade examples of the art, but Foreign Concept demonstrates he can take the D&B template and apply it to hip hop on "Paper Cha$er" which is made all the memorable by the guest spot from New York MC Punchline of eMC fame.

Review: Ingredients continue to cut the mustard with their excellent selection and ear for a good tune and this, the third installment of the Choice Cuts series, is no exception. Bringing together a range of top-notch artists including Krakota, Foreign Concept, Jubei, Spirit and more, this album is a pleasure from start to finish. Kicking off with "Be Myself" by Krakota which is full of booming bass and metallic, warping SFX, we are taken through cuts such as Dramatic & dbAudio's "The Green Box" and Jubei's excellent "The Path" with its ominous, eerie atmospherics and whisperings.

Review: Following numerous successful releases of late, now Foreign Concept returns to the Critical spotlight. Bringing together the talents of Sabre and Riya alongside the man himself, "Injustice" is a gorgeous piece with Riya's iconic voice lending a ballad like quality, with Sabre and Foreign Concept's combined efforts on production the beats are crisp and on-point with murmuring piano keys and gentle waves of bass beneath. We then turn our attention to "Affliction" with Foreign Concept and Riya again succeeding in crafting a lovely slice of deepness with minimal beats. Classy D&B at its best - get involved.

Review: A tidy little four-track venture here from an assorted range of artists on the excellent Ingredients imprint. A very nice dBirdge remix of Kodo's "The Jackal" gets the party started - think deftly placed beats, whirring sub bass and gentle soundscapes here. Next is Kinetic & Mark Recoil's "Cold Streets" is a sparse, eerie piece with unnerving Metalheadz style FX, creaking beats and whirring background noise. The Villem remix of Foreign Concept's "Jaipur" is another noteworthy cut which blends deep basslines with crisp beats to enormous effect, before Stealth & Stylus close with "One Way".

Review: Fresh from his recent excellent outing on the Shogun Audio's Way Of The Warrior compilation, Brighton-based Foreign Concept weighs in with three heavyweight tracks for Critical. Kicking proceedings off, "Mob Justice" is a heads down, stripped back roller underpinned by deadly subs. Label boss Kasra joins in the fun on "Show Me" which intros with a Robert Owens style vocal before the darkness descends. Finally, "Babyfaced Battleaxe" is a dubstep monster with a catchy old skool vocal hook. Yet another sterling effort from the Critical camp.
