Funk Butter Volume Two

Roast Beatz - "Jungle Steppin" - (4:47) 122 BPM Hot

Gramophone Soul - "Day By Day" - (3:40) 112 BPM

Pecoe - "Good To Me" - (4:23) 118 BPM

Frankee More - "For The Music" - (5:04) 60 BPM
Review: If it's box-fresh but still authentically vintage-sounding funk vibes you're after, you'll find them in abundance on this V/A four-tracker from UK label Cuttin' It Fine. Roast Beatz are up first with the James Brown-ish 'Jungle Steppin', before Gramophone Soul marry War/ Sly Stone-esque vocal chants with rap snips on the big beat-infused 'Day By Day'. Pecoe's 'Good To Me' then brings more phat-assed retro vibes, complete with some familiar-sounding vocal bites, before Frankee More plays us out with the rumbustious 'For The Music', which rocks another chanted funk vocal. Overall, file somewhere between big beat, funk breaks and straight-up funk.

Review: The Cuttin' It Fine team have been on fire across the full breadth of 2022, with this latest offering from Frankee More being another flirtatious edition to their already vibrant catalogue for the year. Prepare to boogie down as this one begins, with the uber groovy bass riffs and shuffling percussive crunches of the Alias Mix of 'All Nite' being a killer introductory idea. Everyman then arrives on the groove-inspiring guitar plucks and soulful vocal mastery of 'Shake That Thing', before all hell breaks loose on the monstrous synthetic shanks of 'Sweet Nightmares', twisting a dancefloor classic into a lucid trip. Finally, 'Hit The Deck' delivers a tidy backdrop for Kurnel MC to do what he does best, providing captivating, skippy lyricism to provide us with an ankle twisting showdown.

Review: Act of Sedition's latest expansive collection of re-edits and reworks, Perfect Pitch, is subtitled 'loose grooves for lazy days' and that's an apt description of the pleasingly warming, afternoon-ready soul, yacht rock and disco revisions on show. The vibe is mostly head-nodding rather than arms aloft, but that's no bad thing. You'll find plenty of playable fare amongst the 13 tracks on show, with our picks including the slow-motion disco-funk of Vibes4YourSoul's 'Dance All Night', Pete Le Freq's tasteful rework of Stevie Wonder classic 'Living For The City', the sun-drenched, loop-powered soul shuffle of Frankee More's 'It's Walter' and the percussion-laden South American disco-reggae madness of 'Rita' by Ferdinand DeBeaufort.

Review: We return to the fantastic homeland of Cuttin' It Fine here as they roll out the big guns across this brand new project from Frankee More. This EP is a real showcase of the future of breakbeat and surrounding genres, as we kick off with the forward thinking, stripped back production of 'Plus One', which holds some fantastic vocal work from Phoenix Da Ice Fire and EC. This is followed by the groovy descending melodies of 'Down Funk' and the super smooth chord movements and riffs of 'Who Got Da Funk'. Finally, the ever-widening LFO's and glitchy synth plucks of 'Aw Yeah' rounds up the project in style.

This Feeling EP

This Feeling - (4:15) 55 BPM

Dance Now - (3:05) 115 BPM Hot
Review: An Australian based in London, producer Frankee More gives the occasional instalment of frothy party fun. There's no fear of groundbreaking sounds here or deep navel gazing, it's all about cheeky giggles on the dancefloor. Here we have another two such sizzlers to enjoy. First up, "This Feeling" fuses a laid-back electro-funk bassline with an impassioned soul vocal and a sax solo. On the digital flipside lurks "Dance Now", basically an update of C&C Music Factory's Everybody Dance Now that, if played at the right time, will blow the roof off any self-respecting house party. Job done.
