Review: UK deep house veteran turned nu-disco don Adam Billingham - better known to the music-buying public as Fray Bentos - serves up a fine pair of re-edits as he revisits a couple of gems from the Prelude Records back catalogue. 'Dance 4 Love' is a rework of Bill Brandon's 'We Fell In Love While Dancing', while 'Lay It Down' is his homage to Gerald Mallory's 'Lay It Down On Me' from 1982. Both edits come from the "respectful, light-touch update" school of thought and either will be a cert on the more soulful floors, with 'Lay It Down' just nudging it for yours truly.

Review: Arriving just in time for the summer season, Hot Digits delivers a compilation that is tailor made to soundtrack lazy, hazy days. Even Funkier's "Feel So Good Inside" is an irresistible, funk-fuelled disco groove, while Ben Jamin's "Handle" inhabits a similar space. Soaked in wailing guitar and soulful vocals, it's a wonderfully infectious track. Both Andy Buchan and P-Sol raise the tempo with string-filled disco workouts, while Fray Bentos' "Danced To Death" offers a more electronic take on this sound. The compilation does veer towards house on occasion - most impressively with the subtle drum builds and chord progressions on Down Under Disco's "On My Mind". In the main though, Year Nine impresses most when it draws on disco and funk influences, such as the raucous party jam that is label owner Fingerman's collaboration with Chewy Rubs, "Block Party Bad Boy".

Review: With 19 tracks to choose from covering a variety of styles, it's a case of "Where do we start?" with this one. So let's start at the beginning, with the gorgeous Rhodes (?) licks of Rafael Yapudijan's 'Tropical Feelings', which set the tone for a highly enjoyable collection that's dripping in soul, funk, disco and boogie vibes, mixed together in various combinations, with hints of Latin/Afro/tropical vibes thrown in for good measure as well as the odd excursion into more upbeat and house-oriented territory (see Fray Bentos's 'Risky Track'). Worthy of particular note is 'Funky Pieces', in which Eugenio Fico loops up the Average White Band to surefire floor-filling effect.

Review: UK label Hot Gorilla reach the terrible twos and celebrate with a 10-track compilation that's packed with fine contemporary disco, funk, soul and boogie vibes. If you're looking for highlights, then Havana Hustlers' opener rocks a b-line that somehow manages to recall both 'Lovely Day' and 'Boogie Nights', Fray Bentos makes great use of a classic Afrika Bambaataa sample on 'Stormy Nights', while Andy Buchan's 'The House That Funk Built' plunders Aretha to equally powerful effect and Solazz's 'Blaze The Party' is a boogie-tastic delight. But there are six more quality jams where those came from, from Even Funkier's Patrice Rushen-biting 'Those Were The Times' to the jazz-funk inflections of Shalvoy's 'Beautiful2Strangers'.

Review: EBTG's 'Missing' is a long-time personal fave that this writer is loathe to see mucked about with, but Fray Bentos and mic-bothering partner-in-crime Katty Heath manage to get away with it here! The Original Mix is a fairly straight-up cover (but without Tracey Thorn singing) so it's up to the remixes to do the heavy lifting, with Chewy Rubs turning in a fat-assed, tribal-tinged workout for 3am floors while Conan The Selector opts for a lighter touch that could find favour with soulful house and nu-disco buyers alike, before the Somethin' Sanctified rub takes us into Balearic pastures but brings a 303-like bassline along for the ride.

Review: Happy eighth birthday to Hot Digits, who are celebrating their anniversary with this superb collection of contemporary disco, funk and boogie slammers. With a whopping 30 tracks to choose from there's obviously no room here to go into them all one-by-one, but with cuts ranging from the smooth jazz-funk of 'George's Groove' to the unabashed filter disco euphoria of 'Cuz I'm Naked', and from the fat-ass slap bass of 'We're Gettin' In' to cheeky Loleatta-referencing disco-houser 'Dub Sensation', there's evidence a-plenty here, should any be required, that Hot Digits do this kind of tackle better than most.

Review: Another week, another episode in the re-edit series that just keeps on giving. Getting the razor-and-tape treatment this time around, courtesy of Brighton's Adam Billingham AKA Fray Bentos, are Evelyn 'Champagne' King's 'Shame' (1977), Class Action's 'Weekend' (1983), George Benson's 'Love X Love' (1980) and Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's 'Superman Lover' (1976). There are tracks on that list where you might think, "It's a brave producer who thinks they could add anything to THAT" - and you'd be correct. All credit to Mr Billingham, then, because he pulls it off with plenty of aplomb and absolutely no sacrilege in sight! Some useful little bullets here.

Review: Usually, Katakana Edits releases have us furiously Googling lyrics to try and identify the source material, but for this latest volume Fray Bentos saves us a job, opting to work his magic on two very well-known tracks, Linda Clifford's 'Runaway Love' (1978) and Rick James' 'Give It To Me Baby' (1981). 'Linda's Marathon' is aptly named, as Bentos stretches out the original to a full 12:39, making for a sultry groove that'll go down a treat at Horse Meat Disco, while on 'Give It To Me (Unity Edit)' he goes for a struttier approach with a tech-house style "some Rick James, some Rick James" vocal loop for an intro.

Review: Fray Bentos, AKA Adam Billingham, cut his teeth on the Midlands' deep house free party circuit. These days, after 15 years in London, he's down in Brighton playing soul, funk and hip-hop, but on this EP for Hot Gorilla he serves up three disco-house/nu-disco cuts. 'Dunn's Groove' might be a bit Marmite thanks to its ear-piercing synths (you'll want a decent set of speakers for this one or it all turns to mush!) but 'Obsession' is a solid slice of soulful/disco house with some cool stabs, while the string-drenched 'Friends' is the most authentically 70s-sounding cut and, to these ears, the EP's clear standout.

There's plenty to get you salivating across the EP, from the Atlantic Jaxx-era Basement Jaxx house fizz of opener 'Atom Refunk', and the colourful nu-disco-meets-house warmth of 'Life Goes On', to the screaming, tooled-up disco re-edit rush of 'Where Were You?', and the more loved up but similarly grandiose closing cut 'X-Press Yo Self'. Review: Over the last few years Fray Bentos has proved to be one of Katakana Edits most reliable contributors. Here he hits the mark once more with another double dose of pie-eyed reworks. The pastry-loving producer begins with "Lose Your Love", a gloriously meaty and celebratory re-edit that successfully tools-up and stretches out an Emotions classic for guaranteed extended dancefloor pleasure. It's really rather good, all told, though the accompanying "Soul Casserole Edit" of "Grapevine" (yep, you know the original) is arguably even better, in part because it builds tension via an extended instrumental section before unleashing the song's oh-so-familiar verses and chorus. Whether either track needed tampering with is debatable, but these are undeniably excellent alternative edits.

Review: Katakana Edits first compilation, 2017's "Crate Diggin", was an epic collection of high-grade re-edits, mash-ups and reworks packed to the rafters with tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. This belated follow-up is even more epic, with the popular label squeezing in no less than 50 tracks that variously touch on riotous disco-funk, dub disco, new wave, disco-rock, deep funk, Afro-boogie, swamp funk, Latin beats, boogie, pitched-down chuggers, boogaloo, hip-hop and everything in between. You'd expect that standard to be high - it is a "best of" collection after all - and it is. If you need an instant armoury of scintillating club cuts, look no further.

Review: Given that he named himself after a popular brand of tinned pastry products, it would be fair to say that Fray Bentos likes pie. Disappointingly there's a distinctive lack of pie puns within the track titles of his latest EP, though the edits themselves are top notch. "Sum Ting About Ya" is an expertly rearranged and lightly bulked up slab of disco-soul, while "What It Takes" is a thrillingly delay-laden, tooled-up revision of a sing-along disco classic that makes the most of the original's synth bass-propelled instrumentation. For the EP's final two tracks he joins forces with Dusty Sanchez, first for the bustling disco-house stomp of "Hit It Off" and then the filter-smothered warmth of "Strengthen It Out", a deliciously dreamy affair blessed with superb piano solos.

Review: Just under six months on from his last outing for the prolific rework label, tinned pie enthusiast turned hotshot re-editor Fray Bentos returns to Katakana Edits. He starts in typically strutting fashion, offering a slightly heavier and beefier version of Wild Cherry's funk-rock classic "Play That Funky Music" that subtly shifts from dubbed-out dancefloor stomp to full-throttle party madness over the course of six sizzling minutes. "House of Bricks" does a similar job on a hazy, horn-heavy chunk of flash-fried disco-funk goodness. This is perhaps a little more reverential than the producer's Wild Cherry revision, though it still boasts house-friendly beats to appease those who can't be bothered mixing records with live drums.

Review: Its not just noted Twitter collage artist Coldwar Steve who has a thing for tinned pies. Fray Bentos, a Midlands-raised re-editor and rework merchant, is such a fan of the 1970s favourite that he named himself after it. There's something fittingly meaty about "Groove To Get Down", the opening cut from the producer's latest Katakana Edits outing. It offers up chunks of jazz-funk piano, finely diced synth flourishes and a hearty vocal in a thick disco funk gravy. You'll find more horn-heavy heartiness in the shape of rolling disco-funk workout "Night and Day", while "Love For The Sake of Love" sees him extend, beef-up and slightly pitch-up one of disco's better-known dancefloor slow jams.

Review: The team behind Thunder Jam is dreaming of a "Fantasy Fling". Given that the compilation is an expansive, 21-track affair (sorry), it would be safe to say that they're thinking of a steamy, all-action romance rather than a disappointing one-night stand. Musically, the cuts on offer tend towards the warm and loved-up, with Adata's dreamy deep house opener "Marlena Soul" and the glassy-eyed Balearic disco heat of Aure Zwins' "Long Way" setting the tone. Highlights include the loopy, filter-heavy bounce of Celestino's Lionel Richie-sampling "Rhythm", the twinkling, picturesque nu-disco cheeriness of Double F.O.G's "Bang Bao Boulevard", the synth-heavy boogie revivalism of "Fangkok" by Ivan Fabra and the low-slung dub disco-goes-jazz flex of Noil Rago's "J.Club".

He has supported the likes of Norman Jay, Craig Charles, Don Letts, Giles Peterson and The Reflex during his tenure. He returns on the trusty Katakana Edits with more handy resplices of golden oldies for modern audiences, supported by Goji Berry and Hawwis here for the label's 58th edition. Bentos' "Magic Work" is a lo-slung affair with a rolling funk bassline and some shimmering synth work - it's an edit of something quite familiar you think - but then that vocal dops and it finally hits you! Greece's Goji Berry delivers some smooth Italo styled business on "Mama" while Manchester's Hawwis serves up the sweltering Afro vibes and gets totally spiritual on "Amiga".

Fray Bentos returns in fine style with two cuts, starting with the bumpy, utterly groovy "Body Down", followed by the deeper, more majestic jazzy feel of "Night Giver" - oh, those strings! DJ Laurel's up next, bringing through some proper stylish funkiness with "Yes I Know", sampling the late, great Pino Daniele on the vocals, while "More Shame" goes for the tribal touch, pushing through some lovely horns and a magnificent sway of seductive trumpets for that sexy feel. Review: This decidedly epic collection marks Katakana Edits's first foray into the compilation market and is designed as a "best-of" style outing. It boasts 30 reworks, mash-ups, remixes and re-edits gleamed from the prolific imprint's first 50 singles. Naturally, club-ready material comes thick and fast, with a multitude of genres - think swamp funk, disco, dub disco, electrofunk, Italo-disco, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall - and wide variety of tempos represented. Naturally, some of the reworks tend towards the well known, though there are also plenty of rubs of lesser-known gems for those who want to dig deeper than familiar peak-time anthems. Most importantly, the standard remains impressively high throughout.

The bulk of their new EP comes courtesy of Fray Bentos who is originally from the Midlands - where he cut his teeth blagging sets with the free party scene in the early 90's. He then lived in London where he ran his own night Deep Fried for 15 years. He's currently a resident DJ with Brighton's infamous Soul Casserole crew who have supported the likes of Norman Jay, Craig Charles, Don Letts, Giles Peterson and The Reflex. There's some familiar hooks on these fine edits such as on "Hot 2 Trot" which is absolute fire. "Come & Get It" has some some Summery NYC circa the '70s styled heat. Finally there's a track by Russian duo SO KA with "Loveliness". Their edit going for some smooth Curtis Mayfield styled flavour. Respectful edits on offer here.
