Review: London disco house imprint ISN presents us with a compilation showcasing recent graduates of their Class of '16. All the usual suspects are here; and they all pass, with honours! Hosting the ceremony is none other than Yam? Who, compiling the release tremendously with some surefire dancefloor fodder to make it one year to remember, and boy do they ever! There's the sweet boogie down vibes of The Hinge Project's "Brand New Day" and Freekwency's "Something Else On Your Mind" right through to the Italo favoured vibe of Ichisan's "Bela Libujanja" and not to mention sweet nu disco ditties by Joey Dice ("Puzzling Me") and Richard Seaborne ("U Said U Loved Me") showcasing the labels various moods and grooves in impressive fashion.

Review: If you weren't aware already, Yam Who? is one ambitious, tirelessly active chap. First emerging at the turn of the century with some superb edits of poppy R n'b (anyone remember his boogie take on "Frontin" by Pharrell?) the Yam master has gone on to build quite the empire with his Midnight Riot label. The latest MR release reflects his nature, a new mix featuring 20 killer rollerskate jams from friends as well as some outright classics. Highlights include the glistening, chrome-plated funk of George Kelly's "Turn It Up", the sleek and synthy 80s jam "Living A Lie" by Freekwency and the slammin Linn drum freestyle action of "On The Upside (High Drummer edit)" by Wonkar.

Review: Melbourne's Benny Badge proved himself to be something of a master of synth-laden, soul-flecked boogie revivalism some years ago. Confirmation of his mastery of the genre came earlier this year, with the release of the Seal The Deal album earlier this year. Here, a selection of cuts from that inspired set get the remix treatment. There's much to admire, from the sharp synths and rolling electrofunk grooves of Ruf Dug's reinterpretation of "Midnight Rise", to the Boogie Cartel's superb NYC synth dub style rework of the same track. Badge himself provides a superb deep Dub of "Living a Lie", while label boss Yam Who steals the show with a fantastic, Loose Ends style tweak of "Something Else On Your Mind".

Review: Perspective is a fascinating thing. Being positioned on the other side of the world can make the strangest things seem glamorous. Aussie producer Benny Badge (Freekwency) clearly finds the sound of Walford's E20 nightclub circa 1983 the most amazing thing ever, and frankly, who can blame him? Essex soul boy grooves dripping in glistening white-socks-synths and dry ice beats are the order of the day with highlights including the sleazy grind of "Friend Or Freek", the suggestively-titled "Midnight Rise" and the simply sublime "Just For Two". Dope.

Review: ISM Records' two Futurism EPs have proved so popular that label boss Yam Who has decided to use them as the inspiration for an expansive compilation of previously unreleased gems. Unlike the label's other popular strand, Midnight Riot, there's always been a bit more of an open-minded, eclectic feel about the Futurism releases. This is no different. Whilst rooted in nu-disco and deep house, Futurism: Shades of Space also touches on 21st century jazz-funk (Manmademusic), bongo-laden spiritual house (Nu Ak's "Fly Away"), fluid garage (Nega Tiv's excellent "Liquid Call"), woozy Balearica (Ben La Desh and Plan DAqua), block party boogie (Questlife feat Wildstyle, Freekwency) and nu-jazz (Hamish Balfour). More importantly, the quality threshold remains high throughout.

Outrun (dub) - (4:26) 114 BPM
Review: Melbourne-based Benny Badge wears his influences on his sleeve. Under the Freekwency guise, he makes music that sounds like a lustful love letter to underground 1980s soul and R&B. This second release for Voyeurhythm, his first since 2010, continues this theme, offering slick '80s grooves with just the right amount of stuttering, edit-heavy drums and lush, soulful synths. The title track is the EP's killer moment. It delivers a mix of woozy synths, bubbling synth-bass, 808 drums and a deliciously authentic spoken word vocal. "Outrun" sounds like some of Krystal Klear's early work - no bad thing in our book - while the alternative dub offers a slightly heavier, edit-heavy tweak. Hugely impressive stuff, all told.

Double Take - (3:49) 112 BPM
Played by: ROTCIV, Frank Booker
Review: Freekwency pop on ace label Voyeurhythm with a three-tracker that offers a distinctly contemporary take on the dubbed-out synth disco sound of early 1980s New York and labels like Prelude, Vanguard and later Salsoul. Don't Tell Me" available in vocal and stripped back dub form is authentic in its construction, mixing dubbed-out electronic drums and thick synth bass with the sort of chords, riffs and melodies often found on both deep house and contemporary nu-disco cuts. Short-and-sweet bonus track "Double Take" sticks to the same principles, offering a more straight-up nu-disco vibe for DJs who prefer modern thrills.
