Highlights for yours truly include the hazy, driftaway neo-psych of Niles Philips' 'Hidden In A Starfield', the simple reggae groove of Groove Monkz's 'Promised Land' and Zamali's Massive Attack-like 'Zamali' but with influences spanning Balearica, trip-hop, jazz fusion and more, there's plenty to enjoy here for those that are watching their BPMs...

Review: Timewarp Music's 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series reaches its ninth installment, which (somewhat confusingly) comes in four volumes, subtitled #funk, #disco, #tropicaldub and #downtempo. This is the #tropicaldub selection, for which you can essentially read 'reggae and dub' as label regulars like Prosper & Stabfinger, DJ Laurel, Vito Lalinga, Funky Destination and of course head honcho Timewarp Inc step up to pay tribute to the sound of JA - while still allowing, as with the #funk volume, plenty of scope for fusions with other styles, be they Latin (see DJ Laurel's 'Sambafunk'), Afro (see Lalinga's 'Vrye Denke') or hip-hop and breaks (see P&S's 'Popping The Clutch'), not to mention one fine slab of straight-up funk (Zamali's 'Kings & Queens') and, in the form of 'Simoon', the obligatory weirded-out closer...

Review: Volume 9 in the series, so regular buyers should have a pretty good idea what to expect by now! For the uninitiated, it's perhaps worth stressing the 'freestyle' part of the title: no mere slavish pastiches of 70s-style funk, the 16 tracks here expand that original blueprint to encompass influences from hip-hop, house, breaks, Afrobeat, reggae and jazz. Highlights for this reviewer include the stuttered jazz-hop of Djazz.OrgOnite's 'Yo Sco', Umbo's fast and furious 'Foolin' Around' and label boss Timewarp Inc's own 'Not Bad Disco' - ironically one the album's most trad-style offerings - but you'll find your own for sure.

Review: Ever-prolific Croatian producer Vladimir Sivc AKA Funky Destination, a regular on the likes of Timewarp Music, Kraak Records and Cold Busted, returns with what (if we're counting correctly) is at least his eighth album in 10 years. His music's spanned a range of styles including funk, breaks and Balearica over the years, but 'Bless Da Planet' finds him firmly in reggae and dub mode - and pulling it all off with surprising aplomb. Sivc may be no Bob Marley, Lee Scratch or Toots Hibbert, but this album's every bit as convincing as those "regional heroes"-type reggae bands you tend to stumble across by accident on Sunday afternoons at festivals, and that's no mean feat. Worth investigating for sure.

Review: Like its predecessor, 'Urban Grooves 2' takes a deep dive into the vast vaults of IRMA Records, resurfacing with a 30-track set of "urban funk breaks dub hip-hop beats". In practice, that means a mix of head-nodding, slow-motion disco-funk (see the various contributions by hypno-disco king LTJ Xperience), rubbery jazz-funk-goes-dub disco workouts (Vito Lalinga), toe-tapping, sample-heavy instrumental hip-hop (Ice One), Latin-flecked downtempo grooves (Lo Greco Bros and Flow Bop), sumptuous neo-soul (Orange Factory), and wah-wah guitar sporting deep funk (The Smoke Orchestra). Equal parts club-ready and sofa-friendly, 'Urban Grooves 2' is a uniformly entertaining and life-affirming compilation.

Review: With the words 'funky' and 'soul' appearing in the artist name and title you kind of know what to expect here, and rest assured there's no need to call in the Advertising Standards people because this long-player from Croatian producer Funky Destination, brought to you by Timewarp Music, does precisely what it says on the proverbial tin. Opening with the languid but hefty groove of 'I Don't Want You No More', the album operates largely at the more soulful end of the funk spectrum, veering occasionally into jazzier or more cinematic territory, with squalling Hammonds and sax much in evidence throughout. Vocals are by and large limited to looped samples but don't let that put you off - what you've got here are 49 minutes of real-deal shizzle that should scratch that funk itch for sure.

Review: It's a very groovy time to be alive with Timewarp Music at the helm, unveiling here a very fun collection from Funky Destination, packed in with five fabulous original flavours. We open up with the intricate percussive pulses and blippy guitar melodies of 'Feeling Fly', which puts us right into the mood for a good time, with the organ-driven melodies and vibrant drum designs of 'Let The Spirit Heal' coming in directly after. From here, the vocals are pushed to the background for a hot second as 'So Damn Funky' unleashes a marvellous display of instrumental groove & texture, bouncing between slap bass manoeuvres and intricate guitar solos, before welcomes that warm vocal presence back with another hip-shaker of an arrangement. Finally, we enjoy a cosy outro in 'Flashback', which being bracketed with 'Louie's Kitchen' feels like the EP's after party, floating between loose yet tidy horn melodies and big room band drum lines to close out the EP in style.

Review: It must be hard to pin down exactly where your funky destination is when it's all over the funk and soul map! That's by no means a grumble, though, as Croatia's Vladimir Sivc serves up six pleasingly varied tracks. 'Don't Bring Me Down' is a raw, sweaty modern funk workout, 'Music Gonna Move Your Soul' takes us into 'new old' soul pastures and comes with a self-explanatory Horns All The Way remix, while 'Alla Fine Del Mondo' and 'Afrodisia' add hints of Latin and Afro flava, respectively, before 'Albatros' plays us out on a more headnoddin' tip. Niceness!

Review: Croatian based producer Vladimir Sivc's Funky Destination project returns with his seventh solo studio LP, I Do Voodoo. At 17-tracks-large, Funky Destination mixes up all manner of grooves and funk through vintage drums, breaks and broken beat to hip hop, soul and boogie. Paying homage to '70s inspired sounds, there's reggae to be found in "Dubby Brother From Jamaica" and "Like A Lion" to displays of gospel in "Mo's Town", swinging disco in "It's In The Music" and percussive lounge-time jazz sessions in "Tired Of This Game". With the sound of guitars colliding with more Brazlian and tropical styles in "The Wicked One" and "Put Your Feet Down", there's still no going past this album's undeniable lead cut "I Do Voodoo".

Review: Another 16-track V/A from Timewarp, this time with a slight change of emphasis. Where previous installments in the 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series have largely ploughed a party-hearty, faithfully 70s-sounding funk furrow, Volume 8 operates in slightly more leftfield/eclectic territory, taking in everything from space age jazz-funk (Afternoons In Stereo's 'City Of The Future') and looping lo-fi Balearica (Teddy Presberg's 'Passion') to conscious female-vocalled dancehall (Timewarp Inc's 'Restart') and out-and-out jazz-fusion (Ivan Blanusa's aptly titled, uber-mellow 'Sunday Chill'). If you've picked up any of the earlier volumes, this latest might not be quite what you were expecting - but we think you'll enjoy it just as much. If not more!

Taking in a host of remixes, instrumentals and edits; highlights include the freewheeling cool jazz of Freethinker Funk Essence's "Spring Air", the dance-heavy wares of Djtzinas & The Redgreen Wood Soundsystem remix to "Yuil Disco Breaks" and Funky Destination's sweet, dreamy and percussive "Roots People". Deeper house inspired dub tracks come from Shantisan in "Que Nego E Esse (Timewarp Inc dub remix) with fine originals from AUditors DOmination's "Dreaming Of Zion" and Groove Monkz's digi-ska track "Promised Land". The place to be.

Review: 'Funk' is what it says on the tin and funk is what you'll find inside it, as Timewarp serve up a 16-track best-of compilation paying homage to the squelchy, sleazy sounds of the 70s - tracks like Apedroid's 'Enter The Apedroid' or Basement Freaks' 'Soul Men' could have been lifted straight from the OST of some obscure Blaxploitation flick. Timewarp Inc's own 'Breakbit' is a car chase funk masterpiece, my reviewing notes for Leon's futuristic, sci-fi-ish 'Sexy Toy' read simply "aliens!", while special mention should be made of Koka Mass Jazz's opener 'Play The Game' - a new-old soul/funk jam par excellence, and a consent anthem for the post-#MeToo generation.

Review: Greece's Timewarp delivers Croatian producer Vladimir Sivc aka Funky Destination his sixth studio album, and it burns! Combining live instrumentation with his sampled-based style, FD dials up some downbeat tempos and dubbed-out horns in tracks like "Deep Into Brasil" to some undeniable hand percussion and jazz funk in "B.Disco Express". On a western tip find cowboy ballads and sunsets themes in "The Last Cotton Field Song" (think Django Unchained) alongside the Chicagoan blues and Hendrix rock 'n' roll of "I Was A Rolling Stone". Some further streetsmart funk in "Mountain To Sing" next to the broken beats of "Back To Philly" and some sassy, disco flex in "Sistas Of Mercy". For that soulful, upbeat and hip hop vibe it's all about the title track: "Roots People".

Fans of the label will know what to expect, then, but for everyone else it's the perfect chance to get acquainted. Indeed, you'll struggle to find a better 15-track snapshot of the contemporary funk scene this month, with tracks spanning the spectrum from Hammond jams like Streamer's 'Mamma's Funky Life' to the sunny jazz-funk of Ivan Blanusa's 'Loungin', with detours into Afro-funk (Vito Lalinga's 'African United Rhythm' and 'Fela Mania'), Latin grooves (JazzProfilactika's 'Calle De Cubo'), acid jazz (Koka Mass Jazz's 'Play The Game') and more.

Review: Like the proverbial rolling stone, Jalapeno Records just keeps on going. The continued quality of the long-serving British label's releases is confirmed by this tenth edition of their digital-only "Jalapeno Funk" compilation series. There's naturally plenty of party-hearty peak-time fare to be found throughout, with highlights coming quick and fast. These include Supasoul's sun-bright rework of Funkysoul's trumpet-laden "The Inside Man", the leisurely breaks, Hammond solos and rich guitars of Dr Rubberfunk's "Pressure Cooker", the bustling funk/hip-hop fusion of Smoove's revision of the Allergies' "Run It Back" and the synth-bass propelled goodness of Basement Freaks' "Bring It back (feat Kamy)". It is, though, all pretty damn hot.

Review: Timewarp Music is an independent Greek record label since 2004, whose musical style moves through funk and nu-disco through to dub and breaks. Label boss Angelos 'Timewarp' Stoumpos now presents Funky Destination a.k.a Vladimir Sivc: the funkiest project based in Croatia's Istria region. He is back with his third full length album for the label. We Are All Shining Stars features a dozen or so funk and soul edits mainly, but not limited to rock 'n' roll, new nu-skool breaks and a bit of ol' fashioned soul to boot. From the block rockin' breaks of "Boom Bang", the super lo-slung "J.J's On Meskaline" or the sultry slo-mo balearica of "On My Way To Rio" - this is indeed one well funky destination.

Review: Happy new year! Timewarp crack open a fizzy bottle of 2018 with this immaculate, party-pickling compendium. Their first Freestyle 4 Funk album in 18 months, it makes up for lost time with a full-house selection of warm, funk textures; the vibrant afrofunk feels of Vito Lalinga's "Move Your Body In Africa", the pant-swinging breaks and heroic horns of Sampleheadz' "Moving On", the smoky blues and psychedelic bubbles of Leon's "Body & Soul", the springy jazz mischief of JazzProfilacktika's "Samboppa", Mister T & Lucy Lune's bush-shaking fusion on "Retro Respect", the list of fresh soul-warm funk goes on and on. The perfect way to kick off a new year, Timewarp smash it once again.
