Review: Clearly someone woke up on the uncompromising side of the bed this morning, as Chicago veteran Gene Hunt delivers five tracks that'll suit those who like their house music stripped-back and minimal (with a small 'm'). 'In The Night' has that air of vague menace found on a lot of early Chi-town house records ('I'm Scared' by Jungle Wonz springs to mind), 'Mr Shinn' is a sparse, jerky bass n' drums n' synth workout and 'Eletro Mass' channels more of those mid-80s Windy City vibes, while closer 'Bass Drone' takes us well and truly into the jacking zone.

Review: Despite boasting a fittingly deep discography, Chicago veteran Gene Hunt rarely drops a duff release. Predictably, "Reborn Rhythms" - his first outing on Burek - is another four-track treat. "Deep House Thang", which is available in both Instrumental and Vocal mixes, sounds like a bossa-nova-influenced, jazz-funk-flecked deep house collaboration between Glenn Underground, Amp Fiddler and Kenny Dixon Jnr, which I think we can all agree is high praise. "Get Down" is a slightly more driving but no less out there affair - think elastic bass guitar, spaced-out vocals and subtle nods to classic disco-funk cuts - while closer "The Message" is a borderline breathtaking fusion of driving deep house, layered Latino percussion, heavy sub-bass and smooth chords.

Review: Two heroes of the new breed kick off a new mix series for Jamie Jones' esteemed Hot Creations imprint. Jones began Paradise at DC10 (Ibiza) five years ago and it's gone on to be a huge success, inviting the biggest names in the business to come play alongside his crew of residents. The first mix is courtesy of Toronto's Nathan Barato, a frequent collaborator with local heroes such as Carlo Lio and The Junkies and whose career has been on the rise with releases on Cajual, Saved, Circus and Defected. Highlights include the Derrick Carter classic "Where Ya At?" (Mix Originale), Makam's brooding "Loleatta" and Jared Wilson's rusty acid odyssey "Girl, I'm Waitin". UK talent Patrick Topping this year completed his third summer as resident at DC10 in Ibiza for Paradise. Here Topping showcases the sound and style of his sets with high energy from the word go. His mix features several of his own productions guaranteed for maximum dancefloor impact, as well as Metaboman's lo-slung and exotic "Next Please" through to Dave Clarke's massive remix of Jark Prongo's "Movin Thru Your System".

Review: Delroy Edward's LA Club Resource finally drops its next bombshell, this time a collaborative effort that includes three newcomers, possibly riding low-key under different aliases. Riding shotgun, you got Chicago legend Gene Hunt with the minimal and freaky vibes of "OW (Drum Beat)", a woman's scream darting in and out of the stripped-back groove, and the heavily filtered "S Sonics" by the mysterious Wrecking Project. Over on the flip of the wax plate you have Blacktail's old-school lick "Now Muzik", while "Blimp Works" by Innsyter is a pumping techno gunshot that goes dirty and heavy on the percussive rattle. Raw, dirty, and messed up from the start.

Review: The resuscitation of Chicago's key '90s artists continues with Gene Hunt's latest release on LA Club Resource. Arriving just in time for witching season, the reissue of "Freddy's Dead" is a reminder of just how creative that wave of Windy City producers were. Borrowing samples from Nightmare on Elm Street, the 1999 track is murky and menacing, as ominous pulses and evil cackles herald the arrival of an unnaturally dark take on ghetto jacking. Fans of Hunt's sound will also be delighted to get their hands on the flip side track, "Bong". Recorded during the same period, its primal rhythm, visceral percussive volleys and malevolent acid gurgles are the ideal soundtrack to those long, dark winter nights.

Review: Gene Hunt is a prolific producer with an un-mistakable sound of his own. And although an originator of the acid house sound from Chicago, he certainly didn't stop there. His music has naturally evolved over the years, often incorporating more mature melody and rhythm structures, but always in time with a proper underground style dance track. These tracks are a perfect fit for the direction and vision of the Inner Shift Music label as well, and for this reason we are pleased to present you with "Planted Seeds" by Gene Hunt.
