Review: Clawhammer let rip into 2016 with a deadly dail-turning cranking collection. As always with Jamah and Carl-Lee's imprint, it's an uncompromised affair with focus squared strictly on the darker side... First up, Aweminus & Danger pay homage where it counts on "Get Ya Respect" while Indiekai's "Monsta Skank" jumps wildly on some fine-tuned two-steps and a slippery alien bassline. Bou's "Bounty Bar" is the quirkiest jam of the set with its old school pads, sirens, JB-style soul cry, warhead shakers and off-beat squelcher bassline while Nightfang lays down a "Work For Nothing" style halftime workout. Finally Dub General provides the roller of the set with a bullet-busting groaner. Shots fired!
Review: When Eskimo Recordings approached Bill Brewster with the idea of putting together a compilation exploring his epic record collection, the acclaimed journalist and DJ decided to take a widescreen approach. While the CD and vinyl versions are split into multiple, themed editions ("Post-Punk", "Balearic" and "House"), this vast, 41-track digital edition gathers everything together in one place. Predictably, it's a hugely impressive and eye-opening set, with Brewster serving up largely obscure or long-forgotten cuts that range in scope from trippy, dubbed-out post-punk disco, jaunty jazz-funk, synth-heavy boogie and heavily percussive Afro-disco grooves, to saucer-eyed European synth-pop, the dub techno of Maurizio, Swag's early UK tech-house and the East Midlands deep house bump of Charles Webster's "A Love From San Francisco" project. In other words, it's a cracker from start to finish.
Review: Irish Moss recordings: promoting positive vibes in reggae and bass music culture. They don't fail to deliver on their mission statement here, so check this out. Ireland's DJ Obese and Jay Sharp team up again for a full length that is serious fire! "Mr Willams Dirty Dubsterz Meets Special Request" gives us a well rolled lowdown that's hard to argue with. Feel the bass on "Back To Boom City" where Blackout JA tells the truth; blunted style. There's some female MCs on here too such as on "Blue Fishes" (with Soom T's smooth delivery) and there's drum and bass on "I Love" and we'll give you just one guess what they're referring to? We know what you're thinking and don't worry: there's some killer bashment vibes on tracks like "Domino". Jah!
Review: Whatever you think of the artistic merits of bootleg mash-ups, they remain an integral part of DJ culture. What's more, these cheeky mash-ups often do more damage on dancefloors than the original material. This EP from the Booty Fruit camp - the third installment in the popular Proper Produce series - features four more bespoke bootleg jams destined to cause maximum dancefloor pleasure. There's a studied tastefulness to the lazy hip-hop reggae of DJ Maars' "Come Dancing", while the boom bap hip-hop funk of Prince Pimms and General Tack's "Bad Influence" is so expertly crafted it sounds like an original production. There's a tasty, sophisticated skank to Livingston and Canosis' "Hold It Down", while the fat beats of Cris Crucial's "Like Dis" casually steer clear of silliness.
