Review: It's that time again: Cologne institution Kompakt return with their annual round up of what's hot in contemporary house and techno - all with the distinct hallmarks in harmony with their aesthetic: deep, intelligent and absolutely evocative. Rest assured that all the usual suspects appear - label stalwarts such as Jorg Burger, Jurgen Paape, Gui Boratto and of course head honchos the Voigt brothers. Elsewhere there are some regulars and newbies alike such as Los Angeleno Sonns on the sun-kissed and tripped-out "Tame" (feat Beesh), veteran John Tejada with the bold melodics of "Detector" (a cut from his brilliant new Dead Start Program LP), lo-slung cosmo-balearica by Ghost Vision on "Zuul" and the legendary Jake Williams aka Rex The Dog on the epic dance floor drama of "Crasher". Another tremendously curated compilation that's essential listening.

Review: New project Ghost Vision is comprised of veteran producer Thomas Gandey (Cagedbaby/Matom) and Danny McLewin: who is one half of Psychemagik. Their debut EP is best described by their label as as 'remote kosmische-indebted expanse .. hits close to the core with its deft mix of slow-burning spectral funk.' That being said, "Saturnus" delves deep into the cosmos, on this evocative and and psychedelic balearica affair. Second offering "Zuul Passage" is an excursion through the aesthetic of tunneling and cerebral slo-mo techno: as heard recently on labels like ESP Institute and Throne Of Blood - this will appeal to fans of acts exploring similar territory, like Karamika or Vactrol Park. Be on the lookout for an equally impressive sophomore effort on Berlin based Love On The Rocks. coming soon.

Review: Ghost Vision's "Shakuhachi" is the work of Thomas Gandey and and Danny McLewin, who are better known as Psychemagik. Recorded in late 2016, the title track feels like it belongs to an earlier era, thanks to its breezy, spacey melodies and Linn drum sound. To ensure that it has a contemporary flavour, Love on the Rocks have commissioned two great remixes. Tokyo Black Star who are known for their work on Innervisions, turn it into a slinky electronic disco workout. Meanwhile Al Kassian's take sees him drop funky break beats and spiralling acid lines without losing the cosmic melodies and breathy sensuality that makes "Shakuhachi" unique.
