Review: The Rhythm Plate posse are certainly no strangers to Hudd Traxx, and so it makes perfect sense to see their Goshawk project landing on the long-serving Northern deep house label. The vibes are impeccable on this EP from start to finish, not least with the soulful sway of "My Heart" bolstered by Astral T's vocals. "High In The Evergreens" meanwhile takes a woozy approach to straight up house music with its dreamy synth tones, and "Yes In This Way" turns up the pressure with a killer bassline and feverish gospel preacher vocal hooks. "My Business Ain't Your Business" takes a more laid back, choppy approach to the groove without losing any of that all important soul.
Review: That Hudd Traxx powerhouse keeps on pumping out the jams, with regular Hudd hood Goshawk back in the saddle with some of his most assured beats to date. "Get Up To Get Down" channels a limber, Prince indebted funk, straps it to a simmering house beat and then drafts Erik Rico in for a killer vocal that takes you right back to the best of '90s vocal house. Then Art Of Tones jumps on for a remix that beefs the original up with some more big room elements, as one might well expect from the French titan. "The Love Is Gone" gets into a spaced out disco house frame of mind, which "The Dub Is Gone" then shuffles up into a slinky little groover.
Review: Goshawk is the latest solo alias of Rhythm Plate man Matt Hunt and over the last few years he's offered up some suitably solid fare for labels including Boogie Caf?, Hudd Traxx and Pressed For Time. Here he debuts on Quintessentials with four cuts of "Strictly Bungalow" - deep house that keeps the party on the ground floor. Begin by checking the bluesy bump of "Never Let Me Go", where twinkling pianos and hazy female vocal samples ride snappy beats and a chunky synth bassline, before admiring the spacey synths, dubbed-out vocal snippets and head-nodding house beats of "Why I Sing". "All I Have To Give" is an odd and trippy late night affair, while "Time Is Just A Loop" is a classic slab of quirky, bass-heavy goodness.
Review: In honour of the imprint's fifth birthday, Boogie Caf? founders Jimmy The Twin and Alex Dinham have decided to offer up a first label compilation containing previously unheard tracks from their growing family of artists. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing among the woozy deep house, shuffling broken beats, seductive synth-boogie and retro-futurist US garage on offer, with highlights including the musically expansive brilliance of Sean McCabe's "Infinity", the slick New Jersey bump of Goshawk's "Home (Throwback Vibe Mix)", the Balearic nu-disco bliss of Piers Kirwan's "Shout", the spacey Afro-bruk shapes of EVM128's "Tuff" and the sub-heavy dancehall-soul bounce of Haze City's broken house gem "Yer Tiz". Top stuff from the Bristol-based imprint: don't let it pass you by!
Review: Situationism is run by a mysterious 'collective of DJs and producers from the five valleys'. Although little is revealed about their identities, we do know that this compilation is their biggest release yet and it boasts the mighty "On It" by Peza. The track's clever fusion of a boogie sample (Starguard's High On The Boogie) and some subtle 303 work has got people talking and dancing already. The quality stays high over the remaining tracks too, highlights including George Kelly's melancholic Italo gem, "Trip to Jupiter", Vampire Disco's moody synth prowler "Orbit" and the chilled cocktail grooves of Alkalino's "Trigger".
