Review: Milan's Record Kicks have been championing contemporary soul and funk since way back in 2003, and now they celebrate their 20th anniversary with the release of a collection that brings together nine sought-after tracks from their back catalogue and 11 brand new cuts. Featuring contributions from well-known artists like New Mastersounds, Calibro 35 and Tamiko Jones as well as some more underground names, there's no room to go into every track but most of what's here operates in the arena known variously as 'neo' or 'new old' soul while there's room, too, for rawer funk cuts like Martha High's 'Answer To Mother Popcorn' and Calibro 35's 'Stainless Steel', as well as some surprise covers - not least a ska'd-up take on Britney's 'Toxic'.

Review: The recent album Hill Of Feathers by former dance vocalist Hannah Williams and her retro-soul outfit The Tastemakers is the LP that just keeps on giving. "Tell Me Something (Liberties)" is the latest single to be culled from said album and is one of the record's best showcases for her remarkable raw and dexterous voice - all set to an authentic 60s slow groove. Non-album track "Je M'appelle Le Saxophone" goes for some cod-French lounge action and largely succeeds.

Review: Having already won praise from Sharon Jones, Craig Charles and Jazz Cafe/Freestyle boss Adrian Gibson, it's fair to say that London nine-piece Hannah Williams and the Tastemakers are among the hottest-tipped outfits on the revivalist soul scene. This debut album confirms their quality. Boasting a deep soul sound and vintage production, A Hill of Feathers is in many ways a British take on the formula developed by the Daptone label. Williams, who previously worked with D&B loon John B, is a perfect front woman. Her gritty, urgent vocals perfectly compliment the Tastemakers stomping soul sounds. The result is a strong debut album that should be essential listening for soul enthusiasts the world over.
